one-day joint conference of county
welfare board members, county sup
erintendents of public welfare, and
members of the State Board of Char
ities and Public Welfare, when of
ficials from all North Carolina coun
ties met in Raleigh during the Fair
Week meeting, October 9. The gov
ernor and the prospective governor
spoke at the luncheon meeting held
at the Carolina Hotel.

Charities and Public Welfare, spoke
at the morning session on the hist
ory. development and duties of
county welfare boards.
An open forum in which members
of county welfare boards participated
in discussion of common problems
relating to the welfare programs in
their respective counties was a feat
ure of the session.

the State Board of Allotments and

financial administration in public
welfare.

Teachers Association conducted a
Kitchen Shower and Bingo "Benefit
Farty" at the school auditorium
Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock which
met with greater success than was
anticipated by the sponsors.
Hupe crowds from all over the
entire section attended, all nearby
towns being well represented as well
as large numbers of rural folks. En
thusiasm reached to a peak of al
most competition in aiding with the
"Cafeteria Fund" for which the j
party was given.
A total of $58.85 was netted from i
the very successful Bingo party, the
prizes for which were donated by
merchants and business men of Mur
phy and neighboring towns. The 1
P -T A. extended thanks to these
firms both for the contributions of
prizes and cash. The following were
contributors of either prizes or cash
for the cafeteria fund:

2-Year-Old Daughter
Mrs. Mart Hamby entertained
Tuefcday afternoon from 4:30 to
6 o'clock with a party for her small
daughter. Mary Katherine. who cel
ebrated her second birthday.
The little guests played games
on the lawn, then were called in
the living room where prizes were
given to the winners of the various
games. Refreshments were served.
The guest list included: Little
Misses Dorothy Tullos, Alma Cole,
Pauline Crow, Regina Burnett. El
len, K&tholeen and Pauline Floyd.

HEALTH POST TO
SERVE IN ARMY
Called To Service As

State Nat. Guard
First in this section to be called
to the colors. Major Murray P.
Whichard. health officer for Chero
kee. Graham and Clay Counties left
Saturday for a year of active servics
on the staff of Adjutant General J.
Van B. Metts, with headquarters at
Raleigh. Major Whichatrd will have
direct supervision over appointment
of medical examiners for draft
boards throughout the State.
Maj. Whichard went from Mur
phy to Fort Bragg for a physical
examination expected to last several
days. His station in Raleigh will fol
low. and he probably will be poined
in the State Capital by his family.
During his absence, the post here
will be filled by Dr. Fletcher Adams,
recently connected with the Health
office at Winston Salem. Dr. Adams
appointment here will be temporary,
and no other changes in the person
I nel of the office will be made.
Major Whichard is a veteran of
the World War of 1917. when he
served as First Lieutenant in the
Medical corps. In 1922 he organized
the 115th Ambulance company of
the N. C. National Guard, was pro
moted to a Captaincy, and command
ed the company. In 1934 he was pro
moted to Major and named Chief
Surgeon of the State National Guard.
It is in the latter capacity that he
has been called to active service.
Eager to "do his bit". Major Which
ard nevertheless expressed deep re
gret at leaving this section, and said
he looked forward, eagerly, to re
turning here when his military ser

NEW CLUBS FORMED
The ladies who reside at the dam
recently re-organized the Woman's
Club electing Mrs. Eugene Curtis
as president. Under the supervision
of the club several other clubs were
organized among them. These club6
are the Komemaking Club with Mrs.
Smitha, chairman; the Literary |
Club and the Bridge Club with Mrs.
Watson, chairman.
The Bridge Club held their first
meeting yesterday afternoon to dis
cuss plans for future parties. Twelve
were present.
Police officer Watson and Mrs.
Watson are leaving Saturday for a
prolonged vacation during which
time they will visit their parents at
Guntersville, Ala. and Gatlinburg,
Tenn.
E. E. Curtis, superintendent at
the dam made a business trip to
Chattanooga last Thursday.
