Ronakl llocull. directs of the
North Carolina Highway Safely D.
vision. said this week that he would j
like to mike it clear to all North 1
Carolina drivers thai lie has r.o au
, thority to "fix" a litvnse revocation !
than the man in the moon has.
It s amazing how many people |
(try to Ket me to help them out when '
j their driver's license lias been revok- |
1 pci for drunken driving or some other
I revocable violation." he said. 'Scarce
j ly a day goes bu but that some preson
i comes to me personally or tries to
I reach me throuKh some mutual
friend in an attempt to get me to
shorten the term of a license re
vocation. or to lift it completely.
"As a matter of fact. I have ab- i
solutely no authority to do anything j
in connection with revocations out
sido of routine administration of the
terms of the driver's license act of
11935. Under that law. when a driver
Is convicted of any one of several ]
offenses, including drunken driving j
and hit-and-run. the court is re- |
quired to take up his license and for- '?
ward it to the Highway Safety Divi- j
sion. which in turn is required to j
send the convicted party a note thirt
his licrnse has been revoked and to i
hold the liccnse until the revocation |
period has expired. The division's J
function is one of routine admir.ist- |
rative procedure, and the director |
can do nothing to help a person who I
has been convicted of a revocable
offense-. Even the Governor, who has 1
the power to pardon or parole State j
prisoners, has no authority to restore |
a revoked driver's license until the
revocation period has run out."
"I wish." Hocutt added." that
every driver in North Carolina would
learn this, so T wouldn't be continu
ally pestered to do something about
revoked licenses."
Since the driver's license was pass
ed in 1935. the Highway Safety Di
vision has revoked the licenses of
more than 30.000 drivers.
