The election which is run on the

Naming Competition
All persons wishing to submit ?n
tries in the contest to name Uie new
lake at Persimmon creek are urged
to send or bring them in within the
next three days by Joe Ray, presi
dent of the Murphy chamber of com
merce, as the closing date ior the
contest is April 15.
A prise or <15.00 is being ottered
to the person who gives the best
name, the winner to be selected by
a group or Judges to be appointed
after all entries are in.
Entries should be sent or brought
to the forest ranger's office in Mur
phy. As soon as all entries are in
they will be turned over to the Jud
ges and a winner selected within
the next few days. This winner will
be announced as soon as a decision
is reached.
County Jail Is Vacant
First Time in 2 Years
The Cherokee county J*il was com
pletely empty of prisoners on Tues
day and Wednesday of this week for
the first time in two years, accord
ing to Patton Coleman. Jailer.

Reorganized; Dickey
Appointed Chairman
The loc?l draft board was reor
ganized this week due to the recent
resignation of Dr. R. S. Parker and
the death of J. W Lovingood. chair

posed of W. S. Dickey, chairman
I Walt Witt and H. M. Whitaker.
A readjustment was made recently
also in the advisory board and the
number ol members reduced. Hiis
board no w consists of M. W Bell,
chairman. Dale Lee. and Miss Leuna

Planning City-Wide
Oean-up Campaign
Plans for a city-wide clean-up
cuuiKiii. tentatively scheduled for
the first week in May. are being
mapped by W. B. Stronach. sanita
rian of the district health depart
ment with the cooperation of the
town of Murphy and a number of
public agencies and organizations.
Based on tm idea to beautify as
well as conduct a general "spring
cleaning" the health department and
other organizations will concentrate
on disposing of every Item of gar
bage and filth from tin cans to dead
dogs with a lot of pointers thrown
in on the side to maintain cleaner
conditions in both residences a ?3
business houses. Stirmach stated.
Each of the organizations parti

a definite Job to perform and a di
rector to guide its efforts for the
best and quickest results.

Funeral Services
Held Thursday at
Baptist Church
J. W Lovingood. prominent busi
ness and civic leader in Murphy and
Cherokee county, died at his home
here Tuesday afternoon following a
brief illness. He was 68 years old.
Funeral services were conducted
at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon
from the Murphy Baptist church,
with the Masons conducting the
rites. Interment was in Sunset ce
metery. Ivie Funeial Home had
charge of burial arrangements.
Mr. Lovingood. a native of Chero
kee county, had teen In business in
Murphy and Grandview for the past
35 years. A recognized leader in th?
communitly until the last few years
when his activity was stemmed great
ly by ill health, he had been a pro
minent member of the Baptist
church since early manhood and a
Mason for many years. At his death
he was serving as chairman of the
local draft board.

Boasts 497 Survivors

Farmer's Federation store, in Mur
phy. is proudly displaying 497 sur
vivors of the Southern tra!-> wreck
which on Monday cost the livto of

Only one day old when they crme
through the wreck, the 497 survivors
were part of a shipment of 500 sent
to the Murphy store from Asheville
They were shipped in five crates.

The chicks were kept in the post

Slayers Sentenced
The April term of Cherokee coun
ty superior court adjourned Thurs
day at noon after disposing of a doc
ket of 180 cases, including one mur
der case. Hon. Felix Alley was the
presiding judge.
Following pleas of guilty of man- j
slaughter on Wednesday morning by 1
Hosia Thrasher, Fred Wiggins and
Claude Stewart, charged with the
murder of James Workman last No
vember, Judge Alley passed sentence
just before court adjournment. Thra
sher received from 12 to 15 years,
and Wiggins and Stewart from 10 to
112 years, all to be served in state
I prison.
? The greater part of the docket i
i contained cases of drunken driving I
'in which every offender was fined
$50 and costs, placed under suspend
ed sentence, and their driver's li
? censes revoked.
A few cases were continued due
!to absence of important witnesses
and will be heard next term.

Exhibits and demonstrations will
bo open from 2 p. m . to 5 p m.. and
from 7 p. m.. to 9 p. m. on Wednes
day and from 2 p. nr. to 5 p. m.. on
Thursday.
The Murphy Electric dealers, co
operating with the City of Murphy
Electric department and the Ten
nessee Valley authority, will spon
sor the show.
Demonstrations and explanations
of all the newest feature of the 1M1
appliance models will be shown, in
cluding the latest developments in
refrigeration, modern cooking with
electricity, and the many and various
ways a woman's housework may be
lightened by use of electricity.
During the showing souveniory and
prizes will be given the people at
tending. The only requirement to be
eligible for a prize is to t* present
and register. Manufacturers rep
resentatives. in addition to the deal
ers and their representatives, will be
present to explain and demonstrate
the 1941 electric appliances.
Mrs. Beulah Harris. TV A home
economist, will have charge of the
entertainment and will conduct the
cooking school on Wednesday. Re
freshments will be served to all at
tending.
H. G. Elk ins. manager of the locsl
electric department, expressed the
opinion that this will be the biggest
and best electric show ever held in
Cherokee county, even surpassing the
one conducted here last year. He ex
tended a special invitation to all
women in the county and surround
ing counties and states to attend
this show, including all men who are
interested.
J. Van Rogers, principal field re
presentative lor the TVA will take
part on the progr im. In a statement
Tuesday, he said that this electric
show "should be a revalation in eco
nomy and labor-saving to the wo
men of this entire vicinity."

Southern Railway Company Officials
Plan Investigation into Rail Accident
Train Plunges Into
River On Mountain

Fred Bourne, engineer, and J. O.
Zimmerman, fireman, both about 45.
were killed instantly Monday after
noon about 2:30 o'clock when the
Southern railway passenger train No.
IT. travelling west from Asheville to
Murphy, jumped the track and
plunged into Valley river at Rhodo
flag station about seven miies east
of Andrews.
Tilt engine and tender crashed
down the 50-foot embankment into
the river, pinning Bourne and Zim
merman beneath them The baggage
car. torn loose from the engine hung
oil the slope while the passenger
car. carrying seven persons, jumped
the rail on the right side of the
tracks and remained upright.
All but one of the passengers and
the other members of the crew es
caped injury. The injured passenger
was Miss Lucy Morgan, about SO, of
Marble. Cherokee county, who suf
fered an injury to an arm. Her con
dition was not considered serious
and. following examination and
treatment by an Andrews physician,
she continued to her home.
Southern railway company offici
als planned an investigation as soon
as the wreckage of the engine was
cleared away. A number of these
visited the scene. These were J T.
Moon, superintendent of the Ashe
ville division of the company: S. S.
Lewis, trainmaster; C. E. Burchfie'd,
of Bryson City, supervisor; T. P.
King, roadmaster. and J. J. Bailey.

Late Monday night a wrecker, dis
patched from Asheville, set the pas
senger car back on the tracks and it
was towed into Andrews. The wreck
er continued the work of raising the
engine which had to be cut before
it could be gotten out It was loaded
on cars for shipment back to Ashe
? ille Wednesday evening.
Mr. Bourne, engineer in the cab at
the time of the accident, was return
ing to work for the Southern rail
way on the Asheville-Murphy divis
ion after being off duty for some
time. Grover C. Jackson, also a
Southern railway engineer who was
on the train, said he could see no
' reason for the wreck, adding lhaf.
I the train was traveling at its usuaV

said he had just remarked to the
conductor. S. E. Shook, that the en
gineer was making am unusually
smooth descent on the mountain
grade from Topton to Andrews.
The engineer and firemen were
