THE MILES GROW
LONG AGAIN
The lad new car has come off the

mi'r suddenly grow long again! j
For many years now each season
'has made the county, the stale, the
nation, a smaller place as cars were
improved and new roads constructed, j
WeVe shopped regularly in towns ,
that were a long days journey away I
in our grandmother's time and a
neighbor has been anyone within j
twenty mile. We've driven to the f
next state for Sunday dinner and I
j covered half the continent on our '

N'jw almost over night, there are
' fewer automobiles on the highways. I
An out-of-the-state license plate be

of he neighbor Soys are going to
the high school, two miles away, on
I their bicycles.
But it's not only the actual phys
ical changes in our every da7 living
that I've noticed. There's a new feel
ing in the very air. with the automo
bile something to use only when nec- |
essary and then, carefully, at about (
? 40 miles an hour instead of on impu- ;
dent 60! We're beginning to settle!
i down and look around us; to dig in. ?
as it were, and discover near-by '?
friends and stores and entertain- '
ment. We're beginning to think
again about the beginnings of this
country and why It was our great
grandparents were willing to endure
the hardships of pioneer life.

It may be a little difficult to ad
just ourselves to a war-time world to
which there's a limit on cars, tires,
and perhaps on gasoline. These
things have become to us Americans
iinios; as comn: j:. air <tnd water
and just about as necessary. A while
oack we wouldn't have thought we
could possibly get along without
?...em. N'ow we know we can ? for the
sake of Victory. In fact, we could
pet along with a horse and buggy and
:he railroad to take us on Ion# jour
neys. So let's not complain but make
the most of this time of enforced
lowing down. Let's enjoy our homes
more and be friends with the people
down the street. Let's find fun and
