PARACHUTE Infantry Sgt. Ray E. Eubanks, La Grange, N. C.,
awarded a Medal of Honor posthumously, died after clubbing to
death 4 Japs with his rifle in a machine gun and mortar nest. Going
to the relief of a platoon isolated by the enemy in Dutch New Guinea,
he crawled to the Nips' position, was wounded and his rifle crippled,
but charged in, swinging. After a shot dropped Eubanks, his squad
killed 45 and effected the relief. War Bonds help equip such heroes.

RAILS AND RODS
Very early in the steel industry in
this country, mills arose at Joliet,
111., which produced rods, rail6 and
wire, important to the agricultural
West. These items could be ef
ficiently made there because of the
city*? proximity to soft coal fields.
While the great plants near Chicago
have since overshadowed the Joliet
industry, this steel center stands
high as an asset in the might of
America, insuring full payment of
?11 War Bonds.

ALONE, thousands of miles from home, in the face of bursting
- phosphorous grenades, Sgt. Clifford S. Denslow, Dearborn, Mich.,
took a flame thrower, that the War Bonds some thoughtful person
back home had bought to put into his hand, and advanced through
the thick jungle to within a few feet of blazing hostile pillboxes. He
was in a tight spot but he kept going. He turned on the flame, com
pletely destroyed the emplacements and their machine guns and killed
eight Nips. U. S. Treasury Department

IT. LETSON S. BALLIETT, Reno, Nev., awarded a silver star
medal, showed conspicuous gallantry in holding a submarine at
bay in the Atlantic. As pilot of a Navy torpedo bomber that War
Bonds helped to supply, Lt. Balliett, on routine patrol, sighted the
German undersea craft fully surfaced and immediately went into
action. He let go depth charges across its stern, bracketing and dam
aging the ship. In the face of anti-aircraft fire, he returned to strafe
the submarine and then kept it constantly under surveillance. ^

JAPS threatening a vital position in the Solomon Islanda were
thwarted largely through the leadership of Staff Sgt. Floyd E. Hill,
Marshville, N. G, who has been awarded a Silver Star poathumously.
As leader of an antitank section, he waa ordered to support a rifle
platoon and to have hia poaitioni dug and ready when the enemy
struck. The big gun that War Bonds helped to provide for those men
waa ready when the Nips (track. Sgt. Hill, wounded, helped hia men
to completely root the enemy. v. S. Trmnrj Dttmtmnt
