Says There Is
Misunderstanding
Of Medical Care
For Veterans
Declaring that there is consider
able misunderstanding concerning
medical care for exservicemen and
women. Dr. A. ,1 Weirick of the
\ eterans Administration points out
that out-patient treatment and hos
pitalization arc subject to restric
tions imposed by law.
Dr Wej?ick- who is Chief medical
officer of the VA's regional office
here, said that many persons hav>
the mistaken idea that any veteran
may receive medical treatment and
hospitalization and then send the
bills to the Veterans Administra
tion for payment
"It's not as simple as that", he
declared.. "but it is sufficiently
simple that a veteran who required
medical care for a service-connect
ed disability or ailment may re
ceive it promptly."
Dr. Weirick said that the recent
ly announced contracts with the
Hospital Saving Association of
North Carolina did not change the
basic regulations concerning medi
cal care. These contracts, he ex
plained. merely make it possible
for the VA to provide better serv
ice to veterans with service-con
nected disabilities. They make no
change in procedure relative to
disabilities that are not service-con
nected.
"The law is that all veterans
with service-connected disabilities
that is. with disabilities that
arose out of their service to the
country or that were aggravated in
the service of their country ? shali
be furnished complete medical
care for such disabilities", the
medical officer stated . "The law

provides that a veteran with a serv
ice-connected disability is entitled
to hospitalization or out-patient for
that disability. Veterans who hav?
no service-connected disabilities
may be hospitalized in VA hospitals
or other federal hospitals under
certain conditions."
Out-patient treatment may be
provided for service-connected dis
abilities at a VA clinic or by pri
vate physicians in the veteran'*
home community at government
expense, I)r. VVeirick went on. Out
patient treatment is not available
for any disability that is not serv
iee-connected except in the case of
veterans with service-connected ex
cept in the case of veterans wit.'i
service-connected disabilities who
are taking vocational rehabilitation
training under Public Law IP.
These veterans may receive out
patient care for any disability or
ailment while they are in training.

Mrs. Alexander
Honors Daughter
Mrs R. G. Alexander entertain
ed with a party Friday honoring
her daughter. Carolyn, on her
eleventh birthday anniversary.
The table was centered with the
birthday cake topped with elev?n
pink candles. Pink and blue rib- 1
bons extended from the lights to
the corners of the table, carrying
out a co'or scheme of pink and
blue. Garden flowers were used to
decorate the rooms.
Mrs. Alexander was assisted in
serving by Mrs. Robert H. Cox and
Miss Jane Hill. Forty guests, in
eluding the Girl Scout troop, were
invited.
Hot weather crops such as to
matoes, peppers, egg plant and all
the vine crops can still be planted
to advantage in North Carolina for
production this year, according to
the Extension Service.
Early June outlook points to the
largest grain crop in the history of
the world.
