Kuggins. general secretary of the Baptist State Convention, Raleigh who will address the Baptists of the Western North Carolina Asso ciation in the annual meeting here next week. He is scheduled to speak Wednesday afternoon. VFW Post Named For The Late J. L. Abernathy Hugh Hensley has been elected commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post for the Murphy area. Richard Howell is vice commander and L. I). Schuyler, adjutant. The post has been nam ed the J. L. Abernathy Post No 7o83. Through September 30. any veteran of foreign wars in this area may join as a charter mem ber. \pproximately 50 have en rolled thus far. Organization of the post has not been completed, awaiting the full charter membership from which to select the remaining of ficers and committees. '*> The A & II Flying Service of Asheville will conduct an air show at Murphy-Andrews airport on Saturday and Sunday, August 17-18. Manager Robert Heaton announces that loops, barrel rolls, spins, ribbon cutting and balloon bursting will be featured. The show is free, and people are urged to attend and witness this first air show in Cherokee county. Passenger rides will be available in Twin and Single-Engined Air craft. The planes and pilots ire licensed by the U. S. Government. Methodist Conferences Are Announced On Sunday. August 25, at the 11 o'clock service, the First Meth odist Church will hold its annual church conference at which time the roll of members will be called and nominations for church offi cers for the ensuing year will be made. Mildred Hendrix In State Contest Scout Court Of Honor Is Held HIWASSEE DAM ? The court of honor for the Boy Scouts of Nantahala district was held Tues day. August 6, at 4:30 o'clock Nantahala. The program includ ed a tour of the power plant, cook ing and eating supper out of doors, and the court of honor ceremony led by Assistant Scout Executive F. V. Smith of Ashe villc. The Hiwassee Dam scouts had the highest percentage of parents present and took the trophy home with them for the third time. August 2, on their Explorer's badge, with an all-day hike to the boy scout cabin on the edge of Hiwassee lake. Fri day. Augilst 9. the girls met for a swim in the lake near W. B. Dock cry's store. C., in the first annual Murphy outboard race on Sunday August 25, it has been announced, i Long is an outstanding Southern driver and will be among the lead ing contenders in the races. Greenville Man To Recruit Here There will be a representative ol the Greenville, S. C., Army Air Base on duty here August 20 to accept enlistments lor direct as signment to that air base. The representative will be at Andrews for a while in the morning and at the Army Recruiting Station in Regal Hotel the rest of the day. Sgt. F. C. Mathieu of the re cruiting station here, stated that any army veteran who was dis charged with a rating and is in- 1 terested in going back to the ser vice in grade may now do so. pro- 1 vided he wishes to reenlist for i three years. Mrs. Hanev Taken By Death At 82 Mrs. Emily Haney. age 82, wife ef the late I). C. Haney, died at a local hospital August 13, at 9 p. m .. after an illness of a few days. Fu neral services will be held at Mar lins Creek August 15 at 11 o'clock. Mrs. Haney was reared in Chero kee county and was the daughter of John Chastain and Mrs. Mar tha .lane Martin Chastain, settlers cf this section. She has been a member of Mt. Liberty Baptist church for many years. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs \ R Stalcup, Mrs. L. L. Murphy Boat Races To Be Held On Hiwassee Lake On August 25th Schedule Of Baseball Games Is Announced Murphy baseball team won over Dahlonega, Ga., team Sunday by 20 to 9. Dahlonega will return the game Sunday, August 18, on the Murphy home field. On August 25, the Smyrna. Ga., team will come to Murphy. There will be three games September 1, and Labor Day, with one game Sun day and two on Monday. A $50 cash prize will be given away Labor Day immediately after the game. Tate Announces Sermon Subject The Rev. and Mrs. T. G. Tate and daughter, Miss Anne Tate, will return the latter part of the week from Montreat where they have been vacationing for the past week. Mr. Tate will preach Sunday morning at 11 o'clock at the Pres byterian church on the subject, "Teach Us to Number Our Days'' The Young People and Pioneer Societies will meet at 7:15 o'clock and Sunday school will convene a* 10 a. m. There will be no evening service here, this being Mr. Tate's appoint ment in Hayesville where he will preach at the Presbyterian church at 8 o'clock. Mauney, Jr., of Cherry- . ville, district governor of Lions In ternational, was guest speaker ai the picnic meeting of Murphy Lions club Tuesday evening, at the home of Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Hoover. He was presented by President R. S. Bault. Tracing the history of Lionism in North Caro lina, he told how the state leads the nation in work for the blind He attributed this to the whole hearted cooperation the Lior.s clubs of the state have given. "As long as Lions have as their ob jective this kind of service, they will progress and grow," he de clared. B. L. McGlamery of Franklin entertained with impersonations cl several characters in this sec tion. Among the other out-of-town guests were: C. H. Bolton of Franklin, Mrs. Wallace Hitch of Athens, Tenn.. Harry A. Carlsor. Bryson City, and Mr. and Mrs. J W. Campbell of Nashville. Morris Announces Sermon Subjects The Rev. J. Alton Morris has announced his sermon subjects for Sunday at First Baptist Church as follows: 11 a. m., "The Democracy ef a New Testament Cnurch", and 8:00 p. m.. "The Best Man at the Wedding". Special music will bo presented at both services. Mrs. Henry Hyatt and Mrs. C. j A. Brown of Andrews were in Franklin Monday. School Opening Postponed To 19th ANDREWS ? The opening ot the Andrews City Schools schedul ed for last Monday, August 12. was postponed until next Monday. August 19. This postponement was necessary for the reason that | new replacement for two old worn i out busses had not been received. I Delay in obtaining the busses re sulted from a strike in a High J i'oint plant where the bus bodies ' are placed on the bus chassis. Supt. Hudson states that school i will open Monday, August 19. even though the replacement busses are not received, although the new I busses have been promised. Since the publishing of the list oi teachers last week the follow ing teachers have been employed to teach in the school: Mrs. Ruby Wells Wilcox, 2nd grade: M?ss Irene Jordan. 8th grade: J. D. Page, high school mathematics; and Mrs. Margaret Mulkey John son. 7th grade. DRAMATIC SERUM TRANSFER OFF NEWFOUNDLAND THE TROOPSHIP COLBY VICTORY. OFF NEWFOUNDLAND, faced with the possibility of dreaded diphtheria epi demic, radioed an appeal for serum. Quitting its course, the S.S. Brazil raced to the scene with the needed medicine. The race course is just above the Dam and can be seen from it. Preparations are being made to handle 15.000 spectators. TV A Public Safety Service will be in charge. There is to be no admiss ion charge. Four different classes of out board races are to be held: class A. B. C, and F out board Hydro planes. Already there are over thirty nationally known drivers signed for the races. Each driver will bring two or more boats, and are from all sections of the United States. Harry Nicodemus, South Bend, Ind.. whirlwind driver in class B, C. and F, who was winner of Colonel Green trophy in the Flori da circuit, and L. J. Long, who will represent Greenville, S. C., outstanding Southern driver, will be among the leading contenders i in the races. ? WNC Associated Communities Adopt Projects Development of the North Caro lina side of the Great Smoky Mountain National park, promoting better housing aceommodations in this area, the completion of key stretches of the Blue Ridge park way were among the projects adopted for special emphasis by ' the Western North Carolina Asso ciation Communities, which held it* monthly meeting at Cullowhee Thursday night. Ferebee. presi dent of the organization, who pro sided, and W. T. Teas. * Revival Begins Sunday At The Fields Of Wood The Church of God will begin a revival in Fields of the Wood which is located on the T. V. A. highway between Hiwassee Dam and Ducktown. Tenn.. eighteen miles from Murphy, Sunday night, August 18. The introductory exercises of the revival will be in charge of W. R. Thompson, state C. P. M. secretary of North Carolina, who also will deliver the evangelistic messages until the Singing Evan gelists arrive to take charge. The Singing Evangelists have been traveling extensively in var ious parts of the United States in revival work, having recently re turned from the western states where they have been engaged in succesful evangelistic campaigns. This will make their 100th revival ? individually and collectively) since they have been in evangelistic work. The public is cordially in vited to every service of the re vival at 7:30 each evening. Music and singing will be a special fea ture during the revival campaign The public also is invited to visit the various markers and places of interest in Fields of the | Wood.
