PHONE EXECUTIVE TESTIFIES FOR LILIENTHAL APPEARING BEFORE the Senate Atomic Energy Committee to testify in behall of David W Lilienthal's ap pointment as head of the Civilian Atomic Commission, Chester I. Bernard (left), New Jersey Bell Telephone executive, is shown answering questions of Sen Kenneth McKellar. Bernard, who helped write the contro versial Acheson-Lilienthal atomic report, said he considered Lilienthal to be "one of the greatest Individual ists I have ever met" Sen McKellar is violently opposed to the appointment of Lilienthal. Foard. John A. Dockery Dies At Age 88 Funeral services were held Fri day at 10 a. m. at White church near Murphy, for John A. Dockery. 88. who died Wednesday. Feb. 19. a? the home of his daughter. Mrs. Frank Killian, Murphy. Route No. The Rev. Fred Stiles officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery with Townson funeral home in charge of arrangements. Mr. Dockery was a member of one of the oldest families in Cherokee county. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Killian, Mrs. Carl Beaver. Mrs. Frank Ingram. Mrs. Jim Mc Donald of Tryon, Ga.. Mrs. R. C. Andtison of Lenoir, aii<5 Mrs.'Hugh Rainwater of Atlanta. Ga.; two sons. Will Dockery of Murphy, and Bob Dockery of Fulton. N. Y.; three half brothers. Mrs. Susan Wood of Frank lin Funeral Held For Mrs. Davis Funeral services for Mrs. Marie Eugenia Jones Davis. 19. who died in a local hospital Wednesday night. Feb. 19. from .injuries re ceived when she was thrown from a motorcycle at the junction of highways 19 and G4 near Shields' store, were held Friday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Free Methodist church. The Rev. Fred Morton and the Rev. Mr. Looney of Andrews officiated. Burial was in the Old Methodist cemetery, with Ivie fu neral home in charge. Pallbearers were: Frank. Lloyd, end Leonard Ramsey, Lee llem brer. Marshall Davis and James -edford. Surviving are the parents. Mr. and Mrs. Claude E. Jones, a broth er. Claude E. Jones. Jr.. and a small daughter. Emma Eugenia Davii!. Wells House Is Destroyed By Fire The two-story frame building located at the corner of Depot and i Wells streets, and operated as a boarding house by Boyd Stiles, was destroyed by fire about 1 | o'clock last Friday morning. The I building which was purchased two >cars ago from the Wells heirs by R. A. Crisp was valued at $9,000 ;,nd was partially covered by in surance. The building had been known lor years as "The Wells house", having been operated since 1904 by the late R. V. Wells and follow ing his death for a number of years by Mrs. Wells. The furnishings of the house were valued at approximately $3,000. according to Mr. Stiles, making the total loss around ( $12,000. The fire was discovered first by I a roomer. H. O. Cobb, who was awakened by flames coming through the floor of his second story room. The local fire department labor ed heroically to extinguish the flames before they destroyed the home, but were unabe to do so. However, they did keep the fire under control enough to prevent the burning of other nearby houses that were threatened. The firemen, working hard for two to three hours in the bitter cold, found a little relief in coffee and sandwiches served by the Cherokee county chapter of the American Red Cross. Organize Committee For Making Survey The Cherokee county committee for the survey of "Individuals So liciting Alms for a Livelihood" was organized on February 21. The plan for making the survey is as follows: The county committee, through its secretary, will distribute Intake or Referral Cards to the Chief of Police of each incorporated town and to the sheriff of the county, who will in turn distribute them to their deputies for use In supply ing information to the county com mittee. The cards will also be dis tributed to business firms where the soliciting individual makes his I appeal. The individual who makes liis appeal to the housewife or to J the passerby on the street, if he cannot show license to solicit, should be referred to the police or to the welfare agency. The person solicited is asked to secure from the beggar the infor mation requested on the card, fill in the card and forward it to the Secretary of the county committee. As soon as the Referral Card is re-' ccived by the Secretary of the Committee, a copy of it is forward ed to the Secretary of the State Committee. The information on the card is cleared through the C .-Mitral File of the State Board ol Public Welfare. If a record of the individual i found, its contents is vi it ten to t'ie Secretary of the county com: lit tee. It the beggar 01 solicitor i? a transient, informa i on regarding him is passed on to the secretaries of the other county committees. Tike police or citizen woo refers the beggar or soliciting individual by card to the county committee should also refer him to r serial agency which can give him he'p in planning for his needs. The county committee, specified the County ( Welfare Department as the agenc> to which solicitors should he refer led. A case study of the individual is to be made by the agceny specified, following an outline provided by the State Committee After the process of investigation has been completed by the social agency, the Secretary of the coun ty committee writes the Secretary of the State Committee a summary of the survey result and plan. If the recommendation is that a li cense to solicit for a living be is sued to the individual by the state agency, a copy of the case study will be forwarded to the secretary of the state committee. Any individual soliciting alms should be asked to show his li cense to solicit, granted by the State Board of Public Welfare. Curtailment of the school lunch program in Cherokee county is threatened because of an insuffi cient amount of federal funds to carry o.i as heretofore. Federal funds available ; re sufficient only for a few more days, and it is thought that a majority of the schools now operating lunchrooms v.i" f'ni it r.cccssary to discon tinue. Lloyd Hendrix. superintendent of county schools, stated that it is almost certain that Ranger. Wolf Creek, arid Martins Creek will stop operating, and it is possible that Hiwassee Dam will. H. Bueck. superintendent of Murphy schools. stated that he hopes to be able to continue serv ing at Murphy. It possibly will be necessary to serve orange juice every other day. and milk every ' other day. instead of milk every 1 day. he said. A few other changes will bi? made, but the children will he given wholesome meals. The children here get their lunches lor 15 cents daily .and the school receives seven cents reimburse ment in federal funds. At Andrews it is the plan to con tinue the lunches, but to advance the price from 15 cents to 20 cents With the present plans of Con gress to discontinue the federal assistance to the lunch programs, there will be no further supple ment. making it necessary for the schools to carry the entire expense of operations.
