SOCIETY Guild Guest In Home Of Miss Heighway The Wesleyan Service Guild of the First Methodist church held its regular monthly meeting Monday e vening at 7:30 o'clock at the home of Miss Josephine Heighway, with Mrs. Sara Lloyd and Miss Marvie Walker serving as joint hostesses. Mrs. T. W. Axley, chairman of the Guild presided at the meeting. Mrs. T. A. Case, district promo tional secretary of the Woman's Society of Christian Service, Miss Adella Meroney and Mrs. H. G. Elkins, delegates, who attended the seventh annual conference of the organization which was held in Greensboro March 4-7, gave re ports of the meeting. The Guild is sponsoring the re cital of the Guilford college A Capella choir which will give a program in the church auditorium March 28th at 8 p. m. At the conclusion of the pro gram, the hostesses served refresh ments carrying out the St. Patrick motif to twenty-two members and two visitors. Couple Honor Mrs. C.R. English Mrs. C. W. Arnold and Mrs. J. L. Savage were joint hosteses last Friday evening at a handkerchief shower complimenting Mrs. C. R. English who is soon to leave Mur phy. The affair was held at the home of Mrs. Arnold. After a round of games by the guests, refreshments in keeping with the Easter season were serv ed. Favors on the plates were Easter lily candles which, when lighted, gave beauty to the attrac tives plates. Mrs. English receiv ed many lovely handkerchiefs. W Candler and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Lee. Mrs. Murray W.M.S. Program Leader Tuesday The Mae Perry Circle had charge of the Baptist W. M. S. meeting at the church Tuesday afternoon. The meeting was opened with the hymn for the year, "Hark the Voice of Jesus Calling", with the president, Mrs. J. M. Ammons, presiding over the business ses sion. Mrs. W. H. Murray was leader of the program which was open ed with singing "We've a Story to Tell to the Nations." Mrs. W. C. Kinney gave the Bible message, which was followed by a duet. Follow the Gleam", sung by Shirley Bates and Sally Morris. The Rev. J. Alton Morris gave a talk on "What Manner of Peo ple ? People of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow." Mrs. Kinney spoke on "Chris tianity in Russia", and Mrs. E. J. Darnell discussed "History of Rus sian Baptists", and Russian Bap tists Today." Mrs. Roy Cook of fered prayer and the closing hymn. "Faith of Our Fathers" was sung and the meeting was closed with prayer by Mr. Morris. Twenty members were present. GIVES DINNER PARTY Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Jr., Bud, Frank, Tommy and Caro lyn Alexander. OMISSION In the story last week of the meeting of the Fortnightly Bridge club, when Miss Polly Hicks was hostess, the winner of high score was omitted. Mrs. B. W. Whitfield I was presented high score prize. PERSONALS Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rcid and daughters, Barbara and Jean, were p.utsts of Mrs. Reid's sister, Mrs Tliad Patton, in Franklin during the week-end. Joe Hamilton and P. Li Ivie spent a few days last week under going examination at Baptist Hos pital, Winston-Salem. Mrs. Joe Ray has resigned as commercial teacher at Murphy school. The Rev. and Mrs. Russell L. \oung, who were away last week on business, returned home Tues day, accompanied by their son, Russell, Jr., of the University of North Carolina School of Phar macy. Mrs. W. A. Phipps spent several days last week in Knoxville with Mr. and Mrs. James I. Givens and children, Jeanne and Patty. Mrs. T. A. Case visited Mrs. M. W. Bell and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Hazel man in Greensboro last week. Mi. and Mrs. Bobby Alexander of Cullowhee were week-end guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Alexander. Miss Nettie Dickey of Brenau collegc, Gainesville, spent several days here last week with her mother, Mrs. W. A. Phipps. Mrs. C. W. Savage was in Atlan- j ta Wednesday on business. Her cousin, K. H. Woosley, returned with her and visited here for a few days. Farm And Home Week To Be Held August 25-29 Featuring demonstration of farm mechanization and labor saving de- , vices, the fortieth annual Farm ! and Home Week will be held on the State College Campus August i 25 to 29, 4t was announced this I week by Director I. O. Sehuab of the State College Extension Serv ice. With "Information, Inspiration, and Recreation" as the by-words, this year's event will combine two-hour lecture and discussion periods each morning with demon strations, tours, and inspection of exhibits in the afternoon. Suggesting that farmers and j homemakers bring their problems along with them, Dr. Schaub em- 1 phasized the fact that "one simple problem solved may be worth hun dreds of dollars" to an individual. Officers of the North Carolina Farmers' Convention and the N. C. Federation of Home Demonstra tion Clubs, along with representa tives of the State Department of Agriculture, Farm Bureau, State Grange, Production and Market ing Administration, Soil Conserva tion, and other interested agricul tural agencies, met with Exten sion Service officials last week to lay the groundwork for what is $11,713 Invested In Bonds Here In February North Carolinians, in February, invested $8,545,675 75 in U. S. Sav ings Bonds, Series E, F and G, ac cording to an announcement today ty W. D. Whitaker, Savings Bonds Chairman for Cherokee County. Of this amount $5,199,696.25 was in Series E Bonds, $616,179.50 in expected to be the greatest Farm and Home Week held at the Col lege. The Farmers' delegation was headed by Jacob M Pickler o I New London, Stanly County, president of the Farmers' Convention, and Mrs. Glenn Duncan of Siler City, president of the Federation of Home Demonstration Clubs, re presented the women. Series F Bonds, and $2,729,800 00 in Series G Bonds. The Series E. Bond Sales exceeded those of Feb ruary a year ago by $415,459.50 and the combined E. F and G sales exceeded those of a year ago by $930,992.50. Savings Bonds sales in Cherokee County for February were as fol lows: Series E $6,913.25, Series F ; Series G $4,800 00; total $11,713.25. "We have been pointing with pride to our fine Savings Bonds sales record of 1946, but if the present upward trend continues, we will do even better In the year 1947," Mr. Whitaker stated. "The continued increase sales is evidence oi the wisdom of our people in sav ing for their future security with the world's safest investment," he concluded.
