FIGHT PAGES THIS WEEK Scroggs Arrested For 1938 Murder Of Wayne Zimmerman The solution to the mystery sur rounlinfi the death of Wayne Zirti merman. 34-year-old Brasstown farmer July 2, 1938, has never bu n solved, but on Monday night ot this week Roy Seroggs of Brass town was re-arrested by Sheriff Frank Crawford and Patrolman Charles Galloway, and charged j with murder. He was still in jail | as i In* paper went to press Wed nesday. Sheriff Crawford states that some new evidence has been un covered in connection with the case, which caused the re-arrest of Seroggs. who, according to the ! sheriff, had been arrested twice before, charged with the murder. Mrs. Wayne Zimmerman, now a resident of Buffalo, N. Y., through Buffalo police, has been contacted and will come to the county within ' the next few days to testify in the case. A preliminary hearing has | been set for Monday, before Justice j of the Peace F. O. Bates. Zimmerman disappeared from his home on July 2, 1938, and no I trace of him could be found until on December 17 of that year Allen James was squirrel hunting on a mountain top on the Hitchcock property and discovered a partial ly-clad male skelton. The spot is about three miles from Murphy, on the old Notla Dam road. The j skeleton was later identified as that of Wayne Zimmerman, by members of the family. Three pint wine bottles, containing a white sediment, were found about 75 feet from the body. Following discovery of the skele ton of Zimmerman, the following i were arrested and given a hearing] in connection with the death: Mrs. Zimmerman. Roy Seroggs. and ? And Wilson. Auberry, 70. of Lew- j nei Ga.. passed away at his home May 1. after an illness of three week.*. Funeral services were conducted at Oak Grove Baptist church Sat urday morning, May 3, at 11 o'clock, with the Rev. Manuel Henry and the Rev. Gus Hunt offi ciating. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Lizzie Auberry, and four chil dren. Zelma, Cosby, Ruby and Wayne Auberry, all of Lewner; I two brothers, Charlie Auberry of Lovin, Ga., and Tilman Auberry of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters. Mrs. Cora Ferrell, Buckhead, Ga.. Mrs. Julia Turner, Mineral Bluff, Ga.. and Mrs. Irene Hunt, Lovin, Ga Townson funeral home had charge of arrangements. Parish Supper To Be Held The Woman's Auxiliary of the Church of the Messiah met in the parish room Tuesday with?Mrs. B. W Whitfield presiding. After the opening devotional every member responded to roll call with a Bible verse. Mrs. Ben Warner gave a report ?f the district meeting which was hold in Waynesville April 29. Mrs. William Paper and Mrs. Myron Jensen were appointed to make ar rangements for a parish supper to *>e held May 24. Members brought articles of clothing to be sent for world relief this month. Others who wish to contribute clean, mended used or new clothing may leave them at the church within the next two weeks. Members put on snaps and mark ed choir vestments. Improvements to be made on the church property *ere discussed. Mrs. Esther Urease. St. Agnes Church, Frank in, was a guest at the meeting. An operetta, "Kay and Gerda or j the Snow Queen", will be present ed in three acts at the Murphy , j school auditorium on Tuesday eve- 1 j ning. May 13, at 8 o'clock. The operetta is adapted from Hans I Christian Andersen's fairy story," The Snow Queen". Children from the first through the fourth grades will take part. Rhodes. 76. of Culberson. Route 1. passed away suddenly at his home April 17. John Rhodes of Averys Creek, one sister. Mrs. Addie Ashe of Speed I well. 22 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Junior Red Cross Makes Shipment The Murphy Junior Rod Cross, of which Mrs. H. Bueck is chair man, has made or collected and shipped to Area headquarters the following items: sixty-nine wash cloths, six wire coat hangers, three knit afghans, seventeen glass ash trays, 136 handmade memo pads, 65 bridge tallies, six bridge score pads, 31 crossword puzzles and one deck of cards. The work was done under the direction of Miss Annie Laura Mulkey. Thirty per cent of the eighth grade girls in Mrs. J. W. Davidson's room learned to knit I in making the afghans from their j room. Special Program To Be Presented The Free Methodist church of Andrews is having a special serv ! ice Sunday, May 11, when a j Mother's Day program will be pre sented at the ten o'clock Sunday | School hour and at the 7:30 eve ning service. Friday. May 9, the young peo ple's group of the church is pre senting a special missionary pro gram in which six foreign coun tries are represented. Misses Charlotte Bishop and Ruth Gruber are the pastors. BAPTIST SERVICES There will be no preaching serv ive at First Baptist church Sunday morning, because of commence ment exercises at the Methodist church. Payne John Robert Payne. 78. died at his home, Blairsville, Ga.. R. F. D. No. 1, Monday. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at Hickory Stand Methodist church, with the Rev. Major Payne, John, Jim and Lee Payne all of Brasstown, Zeb Payne of Canton, Ohio, and Frank Payne of Blairsville. He had been a member of the Pinelog Baptist church for a number of years. Mad Dogs Playing Havoc, Grandview John M. Davis reports that at least two mad dogs have been in the Grandview community recent ly, and one cow bitten by one of Ihem had to be killed. The cow belonged to Andrew Davis. Three cows were vaccinated following contact with the dogs. The dogs were known to have been in fights with other dbgs. Mr. Davis and others in the community are ap pealing for people to keep their dogs up to protect people, especial ly children, and livestock from them. ^BROWNIES TO MEET Girls between the ages of seven and nine, who are interested in becoming Brownie scouts will meet at the home of Mrs. W. A. Paper Friday at 3 o'clock. BASEBALL GAME The Murphy baseball team will play the Hayesville nine on the local field, Wednesday afternoon, May 14, at 3 o'clock. Jas. E. Lowe Dies At Age 62 James Eisha Lowe. 62, died at a local hospital Tuesday at 5:45 p. m. Funeral services were conducted at Philadelphia Baptist church near Hayesville Wednesday after noon at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. F. B. Garrett and the Rev. Odie Rogers officiating. Pallbearers were, Earley Swan son, Verlin Hall, Hayden Ledford. Joe Lee. H. H. Hall and Claude Bumgarner. Survivors include: the widow. Mrs. Nova Edwards Lowe: one son. Dale Lowe, five daughters, Mrs. Ruth Hall, Mrs. Sue DeWayne of Hayesville, Lois Lowe, and Mrs. Madge Beddingfield of Swannanoa. and eight grandchildren; two brothers. W. Elisha Henderson. C. A.. 434 farmers received 50.341 pounds of Grass. Clover and Lespedeza seed through the AAA Purchase order plan to be seeded on permanent pasture this spring at a cost to the farmers of $5,341.92 and $11,993 - 23 paid by the Government through the Agricultural Conservation pro gram. Hunt Dies While Surf Riding In Florida Bascomb Utie Hunt. 26. was drowned at Lake Mary, Fla.. Sat urday. While surf riding, he suf fered a heart attack and fell into the water and was drowned, ac cording to reports received here. The body was brought to Hayes- 1 ville Monday and lay in state at j the Methodist church from 2 to *3 | o'clock, when funeral services were j held, with the Rev. G. W. Carver I officiating. May 25. ?% Phone Service Back To Normal Cherokee county telephone users : have been receiving good local service ever sine April 21 when I the nine employees of the local 1 Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company who were striking voluntarily returned to vork. and with the return of op erators to their posts in many parts of the county Monday, long dis tance service from here is practi cally back to normal. Blind To Feel" Pinch Of Congress Mrs. Laura Freeman, welfare superintendent, states that her of fice has received notice from the State Commission for the Blind that Aid-to-the-Blind checks for May will be delayed because Con gress has not appropriated neces sary funds. Passage of a defici ency appropriation is expected any day. and checks will be forwarded | as soon as funds are made avail able. The State Commission for the Blind is prohibited by law from making payments in the absence of Federal funds. There are 14 persons in Chero kee county receiving Aid-to-the Blind awards, totalling $321 a month.
