Mrs. Glenn Bates. The Rev. T. G. Tate conducted the devotional. Supt. H. Bueck an nounced that at the beginning of school there is a large enrollment and that the average attendance following does not make a good record for the school. Young, pas tor of the First Methodist church here, will preach on "Symbols" Sunday morning at 11:00 and on "Victory" Sunday evening at 7:30. The church will join in observing world wide communion Sunday morning. Sunday school begins at 9:45. Methodist Youth Fellowship will meet Sunday evening at 6:30. This is the last Sunday of this conference year. The annual con ference of the Western North Carolina Conference will be held in the Dilworth Methodist church in Charlotte October 8-13. Regular prayer meeting will be held next Wednesday evening at 7:30 with Mrs. Merle Davis in charge. There will be no preach ing service on Sunday, October 12, but the usual prayer meeting serv ice on Wednesday October 15 will be held. Roscoe Lamb Is Shot In His Back rranK Kooinson, about 35, a? mechanic here, who according to Sheriff Frank Crawford, admitted the shooting Sunday of Roscoe Lamb 35. also of Murphy, is being held in Jail here pending the out come of Lamb's condition. Lamb was admitted to Petrie hospital about 3 p. m. Sunday with a bullet wound in the back. He told authorities he was unaware of the identity of the man who shot him. He was reported Wednesday to be doing very well. Sheriff Crawford declined to comment on the case ot!'cr than to say th*t Rob.nscn admitted tne shooting. The "Goo Goo", in which he took the honor, is a 20 foot boat and is powered by a 225 inch displacement motor develop ing 300 horsepower. By winning the Patomac river | regatta. Mr. Henn became first in line of the John Charles Thomas trophy awarded each year to the high point man. School Students Answer Inquiries About This Vicinity The Commercial Department of the .Murphy schools has taken on l ew additional duties aside from the regular courses of instruction, announces Supt. H. Bueck. The classes are now assisting in civic duties by answering the hordes of routine questions and requests for information mailed to the Chamber of Commerce. Requests for detailed informa tion on Murphy and Cherokee county in general have been aver aging in excess of more than fifty letters each week. The classes will gather the ma terials desired and in addition will mail out the regular Chamber of Commerce bulletins in response to the many requests from nearly every state in the union. Some requests have involved many hours of research in the past. Final Rites For Hartness Held Harvey Hartness. 46, died at 11:30 p m. on Wednesday. Sept. 24. in the hospital at Cherokee. Fox Hunters Meet Next Week The annual meeting of the Tri State Fox Hunters association will be held on October 8. 9. and 10 at Murphy and Bearpaw. The num bering and registering of all hounds for bench show and field trial will be held on Oct. 8 at 2 p m. at the Cherokee county fair grounds. The bench show will be gin at 7 p. m. Payne Taken Into Custody A man. giving his name as "Will ard Payne" of Clay county, was taken into custody by sheriff Frank Crawford Sunday about 12:30 a. | m. following a report of a stolen vehicle. Payne, after a prelimi nary hearing before F. O. Bates, was confined to the county jail when he failed to produce requir- 1 ed bond and was charged with stealing an automobile and driving while intoxicated. The incident occurred when the ' owner of the vehicle, Fred Dickey. | Jr., reported the theft. Sheriff | Crawford soon >ighted the stolen car and gave chase. Outstanding Exhibits And Attractions Brinaina Larqe Crowds To Annual Fair Thousands of happy and eager youngsters as well as swarms of adults have already attended the Twentieth Annual Cheroke County Fair here in Murphy as the at traction rolled into its third day. Still larger crowds are expected as the fair continues through Sat urday. Departmental exhibit superin tendents have also expressed their gratitude for the manner in which the citizens of the county have responded in submitting their ma terials for exhibition which has all contributed to the success of the f?J.\ Exhibits in flowers, handicrafts, pantry supplies, garden and field trops, and many others have sur passed all expectations. The re sponse has been overwhelming and the quality of the exhibits have upheld the excellent Cherokee county fair tradition. Along the stork pens, hundreds of fine stock exhibits attracting the Cherokee farmer for hoursk and it is believed that the s'cek on ex hibition thi< year will prov'j to be the best ever seen at the annual event. Lease On Regal Is Purchased By Rev. F. M. Davis The Rev. F. McConnell Davis of Atlanta. Ga.. has purchased from Mrs. Thelma Dickey Phipps the lease on the Regal hotel, and took over the management of the hotel Wednesday, October 1. Mr. and Mrs. Davis and their three children. Charlene. Richard c-nd Carole Anne, arrived here this week with their household goods. Mr. Davis has been pastor of the Cascade Baptist church in Atlanta for the past 17 years. Three Murphy men. Hubert Weils. Guy C ain and Charles Wil bur who were severely wounded in a shooting affray here Sunday morniim about 12:30 o'elock, are reported to be doing as well as could be expected at Murphy Gen eral hospital. According to Chief of Police Sheridan Stiles, the shooting took place on Tennessee Street between the post office and the Henry House when Cain and Wilbur en countered Wells who was seated in an automobile with two women. Two pistols were used in the shooting, and all three men were shot, about ten shots having been fired. Stiles said. They were rushed to the hospital in police cars and taxis, and a number of physicians were called to attend them. Wells was shot in the ab domen. Cain was shot in the ab domen and shoulder, and Wilbur was shot in the chest and abdo men. Wells, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Wells, is about 25 years of age and unmarried. Cain and Wilbur, about 40. are both married, the officer said. Wells recently opened a beer and billiard parlor here. Cain and Wilbur are employed by C. L. Al verson in the maintenance of juke boxes. Stiles said. No formal charges have been placed against any of the men in volved in the shooting, pending outcome of injuries. Rosser said the re-examina tion schedule had been worked out carefully according to the number of drivers in each alphabetical croup. He added that: "At the end o! four years. I hope North Caro lina can boast a group of safety minded motorists." Taking four years to complete, the re-examination program is de signed- to eliminate all poor drivers from the roads. A thorough driv ing test is now being given, which examines motorists on the essent ial driving techniques. Given in four parts, the exam consists of: a vision test, a highway sign test, a written rules questionnaire; and an actual road test. Col. Rosser again urged upon motorists the necessity of taking the examination as soon as their alphabetical group comes up. Per sons caught driving on old licenses after the expiration of their alpha betical group deadline, will be guilty of driving without a license, which is a misdemeanor, and will be punished by a line of not less than $25.
