4-H Club Members j
To Get Free Trips
To National Camp
A fret trip to National 4-H Club
Camp next summer will be award
ed to two North Carolina 4-H Club
members, one boy and one girl,
having the best all-around record
in club work, says L. R. Harrill,
State 4-H Club leader for the
State College Extension Service.
The two trips are being awarded
by the Atlantic Coast Line Rail
load, Mr. Harrill said, as continu
ing evidence of appreciation fjr
4-H Club work in its territory.
Free trips will also be given to
the outstanding boy and girl in
other states which is served by
the Coast Line.
National 4-H Club Camp is .in
annual event which is held each
summer. The camp was established
in 1927 and was held each summer
thereafter until it became neces
sary to cancel the 1942 meeting on
account at the war. It was resumed
in the summer of 1946.
Beginning in 1928, and continu
ing each year, the Atlantic Coast
Line has offered these trips as
awards to outstanding members
selected by the several State 4-H
Club leaders.

Is Held
Sunday
Mrs. Annie Harshaw Richard
son, wife of J. A. Richardson,
prominent Murphy merchant, died
at her home here Friday after
noon, December 19, at 2 o'clock.
She was 72 years of age and hid
been an invalid for nine years.
Mrs. Richardson was the daught
er of Mrs. Abe MeD. Harshaw of
Asheville and the late Mr. Har
shaw. formerly well-known resi
dents of Murphy. Mr. Richardson
is seriously ill in a local hospital
at present.
Funeral services were held Sun
day afternoon at 2:30 o'clock it
the First Methodist church of
which she was a member, with the
pastor, the Eev. W. B Penny, and
the Rev. J. Alton Morris, pastor
of the First Baptist church, of
ficiating. Burial was in Sunset
cemetery with Ivie funeral home
in charge.

and two brothers, Henry Harshaw
of St Petersburg. Fla . and Edgar
Harshaw of Richmond. Va.

Miss Elinor Meeks. third grade
teacher in the Murphy school, was
in charge of the Friday morning
assembly program.
A nativity play was presented,
and carols were sung
Santa Clans appeared at the
conclusion of the program and
presented each child with candy.
High school chapel was held
Friday afternoon with Mrs. J. D.
Mallonec in charge.
After the devotional. Misses
Jean Penny. Susie Miller. Porter
Rapcr and the eighth grade chor
uses presented special musie.
Carols were sung by the group and
Supt H Bueek read a Christmas
stor>. "The Little Star" and Miss
Eunice Henry gave the poem. "Jes'
Fore Christmas" by Eugene Field.
Santa Claus closed the program
by presenting candy.
Morrises Called
To Washington
The Rev. and Mrs. J. Alton
Morris and children left Monday
for Washington, D. C., to be at
the bedside of Mrs. Morris' moth
er. Mrs Sarah DeJournett, who is
ill in the hospital. Mr. Morris ex
pects to return in time for next
Sunday's regular services at First
Baptist church.
A Student Night program will be
given at First Baptist church Sun
day evening at 7:30 o'clock, with
college and high school students
taking part
