No. 7999 held its first meeting of
1948 at the Town Hall on Friday,
January 12, at 7:30 P. M. The pur
pose of this meeting was to make
plans for reorganizing and to ap
[ point a committee for soliciting old
i and new members. Members at
.large are Dr. Charles Van-Gorder,

The next meeting will be the

In Essay Contest
ANDREWS ? Carolyn Smith,
Andrews high school senior, has
just been notified that she is the
winner of a $50 cash prize in the
nation-wide essay contest on
"What America Means to Me".
One of the five first prizes of
$1,200 was won by Hugh Huston
of Hocky Mount, senior in the
high school there.
Miss Smith was a recent nation
al winner in the 4-H clothing con
test in which she received a $200
scholarship and an all-expense
free trip to Chicago, and enter
tainment for one week.

Clung Carringer is teacher of one
of our three seventh grade sec
tions. Mr. and Mrs. Carringer and
family moved from Robbinsville
to their new home* in the Andrews
community several years ago.
Prior to coming to Andrews Mrs.
Carringer taught in the Robbins
ville school for seven years. This
is Mrs. Carringer's first year in
Andrews elementary school.
Mrs. Carringer received her
education at Western Carolina
Teachers College at Cullowhee.

Claude Tatham of Andrews have
announced the marriage of their
daughter. Miss Annie Ruth Tat
ham, to Gene Palmer, son of Mr.
and Mrs. W. T. Palmer of An
drews. The marriage took place on
December 30, at Blairsville, Ga.,
with G. A. Jones, N. P., perform
ing the ceremony. They were ac
companied by Charles ("Punk")
Almond.
Mrs. Palmer is a student in An
drews high school. Mr. Palmer is
attending Campbell College at
Buie's Creek.
The couple plan to continue
their school work.

a son. Charles Jr., on January 10,
at Ft. Sanders Hospital, Knox
ville, Tenn. Mrs. Delaney is the
former Miss Mary Grant, daughter

Capt. F. W. Swan returned
from Chicago, 111., where he made
a business trip the past week.
Mrs. L. B. Nichols has returned
from a visit of several weeks to
Villa Rica, Ga. Her father, W. B.
Candler of Villa Rica, and her
brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and
Mrs. T. I. Underwood of Macon,
Ga., returned with her for a visit
of several days.
Miss Polly Hicks was the guest
of Mrs. Ruby Hill in Murphy ,
Thursday night of last week.
