Adequate Wiring Organization Is Formed ffere A Valley- wide ^aniatiji lias beef! formed to improve Tennessee \ alley homes thrtUfcH better elec trical wiring. W W. Jacobs mana ger 01 i he Cleveland. Tennessee, Electric System, announced this week. Mr. Jacobs is chairman of the organization, which is known as the executive committee of the Tennessee Valley Adequate W iring Bureau. Members of the oommittee rep lesent all branches of the electric industry The adequate wiring bureau will provide design and inspection ser vice free of charge to ho ne build ers here through the City oi Mur phy Electric Dept.. E G Hughes, clerk, said. The organization has bet-n lic ensed by the National \dequaw Wiring Bureau to certify that homes are adequately wired to I meet the demands placed on it by i the widespread use of electricit\ jn the Tennessee Vally area. "Many of our homes were wired I to provide for lighting and one or two smaller appliances." Mr. Jac obs said in outlining the needs for better wiring. "These same homes now have added many major ap pliances. and are adding more all the itme." he continued. "The wires in a home are the highways of electrical energy, and today we find ourselves with 1912 highways and 1948 traffic." Mr. Jacobs pointed out that ina dequate wiring was both danger ous and inefficient. 'The best solu tion is to install adequate wiring when the house is built." An edu cational campaign to inform con tractors and other members of the building trade is now under way. "The average home in this area used about 600 kilowatt-hours of electricity a year back in 1933,' j Mr. Jacobs declared. "Today, the j average for the entire Tennessee I Valley is more than 2.400 kilowatt hours. and the increase is continu ing." he said. The average home in Murphy uses 3812 kliowatt- 1 hours annually.' "Wiring has not j k pt pace with this progress in j ;-.>ctrical ..ving, and it must be j .m proved '< neet the demands of i he intei i- it home buyer or [ guilder." Busy Years Ahead For N. C. Schools There are busy years ahead for North Carolina's little red school house, says Dr Selz C Mayo, as sociate professor of rural sociology at the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station. Dr. Mayo recently computed estimates of the number of new first graders that white and non white schools might expect dur ing the next six years. He conclud es that in 1954 first grader enroll ment in white schools will be half again as large as it was in 1946 In non-white schools there will be a third more new first graders in 1954 than in 1946 The sociologist bases his esti mates on the birthrates from 1939 through 1947. correcting each for infant deaths. He assumes that babies born in a given year will be ready for school about seven years later. Using 1940 enrollment as 100 per cent. Dr. Mayo says the per centage of white first graders should be 107.6 in 1948. 117.4 in 194*? 125 4 in 1950. 118 5 in 1951. 113 0 in 1952. 134 6 in 1953. and 151.4 in 1954. In other words, for every 100 white children born in 1939 and ?tarting school in 1946. there will l.e 151 starting school in ?^."4 For! ? very 100 non-white children born in 1939 and starting school in 1946 there will be about 134 starting I school in 1954.
