Speaks On His
Experience In
Japan During War
Dr. Robert A. Dyer who was a
missionary in Japan from 1940 to
]945 and in a concentration camp
?hree years of that time, spoke at
First Baptist church Tuesday eve
ning. Representatives of approxi
mately 20 churches in this associa
tion heard his address.
The Rev. J. C. Pipes of Asheville
arranged for the meeting, especial
ly inviting the Sunday School
superintendents and pastors of the
churches to attend. Ladies of the
church served supper.
Dr. Dyer told of life in Japan
prior to the war, when he ^aid,
there was not enough food to go
around and even then there was
starvation and not enough fuel for J
heat He said that while in the
concentration camp he learned to
lind out how life is "from down
under". It looks different from
what one experiences in America.
He said that the people of Japan
rre anxious to learn the truth, and
:hat personal evangelism is the
most effective way to reach them.
He said that Japan is a ' man's
world" and that the women do
not count.

Marvin J. Ross
The body of Sgt. Marvin J. Moss,
who was killed on October 13.
1944. in France at the age of 20.
arrived in Murphy Tuesday. The
son of Richard 11 . and Alice Moss,
of Shooting Creek, he was a mem
ber of the Second Cavalry. His
mother was accidentally killed

The new bishop will be among
the youngest in the church. He
was born at Chapel Hill. October
25. 1910. He was graduated from
the University, where he was a
member of Phi Beta Kappa. Later,
he entered Virginia Theological
Seminary, graduating in 1935.
One of Bishop Henry's first of
ficial acts will be the consecration
ot the new Chapel of St. Francis
of Assisi on the Cherokee Indian
Reservation.
On November 2. Bishop Henry
will visit Murphy and will be
ready to confer the Apostolic rite
of Confirmation or Laying on of
Hands. Those desiring to receive

At This Fair
The Cherokee County Fair to
| be held throughout the week of
! September 27 through October 2,
Monday through Saturday, promds
^ to be one of the best fairs ever
held in Murphy. The very liberal
premiums to be awarded compiare
favorably with the N. C. State Fair.
As in the past a special section
will be devoted to exhibits of 4-H
Club projects. These exhibits
will be judged in competition be
tween 4-H Club members only.
A department which will draw
considerable interest is the general
farm exhibit for which $125.00 in
prize money has been set up. This
exhibit is designed to show com
plete and balanced farming pro
grams.
All exhibits are to be made on
Monday, and judging will be done
Tuesday. Livestock exhibits will
be judged Thursday.
Friday, Oct. 1, will be school
day, when all school children will
he admitted free.
The fair is sponsored by the
Cherokee County Mutual Fair
Association. Inc., an organization
of farmers of the county. Competi
tion for the prizes is open to
l esidents of Cherokee, Clay, Gra
ham, Union and Towns counties.
