Superior Court Adjourns Here The April term of Cherokee County Superior Court adjourned Wednesday afternoon. Many cases were tried, many nol pressed, and many continued. In a num ber of cases defendants failed to appear. The following verdicts were rendered: Merle Slagle, violation prohibi ion law and driving drunk, six months in jail, driver's license revoked. John Hampton, Jr., driving drunk, $100 and costs, license revoked. Everett Larry SheMon, driving drunk, $100 and costs, license re voked. Billy McAnji.rh., casing con cealed weapon, pay costs. Ambers Arp, driving drunk, $18175 bond forfieted. Lois Radford, carrying conceal ed weapon, four months in Jaik suspended two years upon pay ment of costs. R L. Harfey Carroll, attempt to steal (Continued on pace 4) Cancer Drive Is Under Way The 1950 Cancer Drive is now ] underway here and will be con ducted during the entire month nl April. ?The goal that has been set for Cherokee County is $800. Mrs. Mary Katherine Atkinson is county commander and Mrs. C. K. Olson, chairman, of the drive. Murphy Junior Woman's Club plans to sponsor a square dance on April 29 to help raise funds for the drive. Bishop Henry To Hold Services Bishop M. George Henry of the Episcopal Diocese of Western North Carolina will hold a service of confirmation and Holy Com munion on the morning of April 23, at 9 o'clock in the Chapel of the Holy Comforter in Andrews, and a service of confirmation and Holy Communion in the Church of the Messiah at Murphy the same day at 11 A. M. On Saturday night, April 22, at I 8 o'clock, the bishop will hold a service of confirmation in the Chapel of St. Barnabas in Murphy, j Dr. R. H. Taylor To Deliver Finals ANDREWS ? Final graduating exercises for Andrews High School will be held in the school auditor ium on the evening of May 26. On this occasion the address will! he delivered by Dr. Rosoe.- II. Tay lor, head of the history depart ment of Western Carolina Teach er's College. Thirty-two diplomas will be awarded to sixteen boys and six teen girls. There are four married students in the class, three boys and one girl. Of the married group of students there is one husband and wife, this marriage having been contracted four years ' ago. All of the married boys are G I students. The baccalaureate sermon will be preached Sunday evening, May 21, in the school auditorium. Between now and commence ment there will be both a junior and senior play given. The junior play is set for Friday, April 28, and the senior play will be given later. Demonstration Murphy Baseball Club will sponsor a demonstration Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Fair grounds in Murphy by Crash Brown. He will seal himself in a casket and blow himself out, in what is called the dynamite casket act. Other acts also are scheduled. He will be assisted by Suiside Sibley. His practice will be devoted to eye examination and rehabilitation oi the visual functions. Dr. Gossett is a graduate of Bre vard College and Northern Illinois College of Optometry Chicago, 111., from which he holds s B. S. degree in visual optics and his Doctor's Degree In optometry. Before moving to Murphv Dr. Gossett was associated With Dr. W. H. Pearee, Hendersonville. He is a veteran of World War If, hav ing served 38 months in the Navy Medical Department. A large part of this time was spent with Headquarters Squadron Fleet Air Wing Two loosed In the Pacific Dr. Gossett is a native of Green ville, S. C? but has made his home in Henderson County -for the past nine years. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Gossett if Etowah, Tenn. Dr. and Mrs. Gossett have one daughter, Shelia, and at present reside at 200 Proctor Street in Murphy. W. H. Sudderth Is Taken By Death H. Sudderth, 79, member of* a prominent family, <rf this county, died at his home in the Peachtree section near Murphy about 7 a. in. Monday following a long illness. A native of Cherokee County he was the son of the late Theo dore and Delia Copeiand Sud ? Fain, who has planted around 25 dogwood trees this year and more than that last year, has been added to the SCOUT'S dog wood club. Pre-School Clinic To Be Held 24th The pre-school clinic for Mur phy School iwill be held in the pri mary building Monday, April 24. beginning at 9 o'clock. All chil dren eligible for the first grade next year should come to the school at this time. A committee from the P. T. Convention To Be Held Here Apr. 21-22 To Lay Plans For New School Tile Murphy School Board has employed Greene and Robelot, Asheville architects and engineers, to begin work on plans for a new high school building to be erected on the school grounds adjacent to the primary building. Army, Air Force Want To Enlist H. S. Graduates The U. S. Army and Air Force Recruiting Service is now making an effort to enlist high school graduates. Recruiter Ken Coon of Murphy has started contacting the high schools in this area, presenting the program to the ] prospective applicants. Sgt. Coon says that no high school seniors can enlist until they have graduated, under the 1950 high school plan. They are being encouraged to enlist after graduation. Sgt. Coon already has spoken in the Robbinsville -High School, and will speak at Hiwassee Dam High School Friday. Other schools will be visited at a later date. Diseases Cause Attendance Loss At the end of the first seven months, the statistical report from the office of the Murphy school showed the following figures: number of cases of colds, 2,726 Influenza. 370; chicken pox, two whooping cough, 14; Scarlet fever 14; meningitis, one; mumps, 13 measles, one; sore eyes. 15; scab ies, two; empetigo, 15. Total number school days lost due to the cases listed were 0009. This includes Elementary and High Schools. Stowe's Sermon Topics Listed The Rev. Lester Stowe, pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, Suit, has announced that his ser mon topic for Sunday morning at 11 o'clock will be, "Nothing But the Blood", and for Sunday eve ning, "Waiting on God". A Training Union study course for the West Liberty Association will be held at Friendship May 1-5. Civitan Charter To Be Received > Murphy Civitan Club will re ceive its oharter on Friday eve ning. April 28, when Judge Eugene J. Bryan of Chattanooga, president of Civitan International, is expected to attend. A meeting of the club will be hjid during the week of the 17th, at the Methodist Church, and members will be notified the exact date, states Secretary A. D. Peacock. Delegates are expected from Training Unions in Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Macon Swain, and Jackson Counties. Everett White of FnankHn, tegional director, will preside. The Rev. S. L. Lamm of Bryson City wilt conduct the worship period Friday afternoon, and the Rev. J. Alton Morris will give the welcome for the host church. Mrs. Clay Rogers of Hayesville will have charge of the Adult Scripture Reading tournament. Murphy Youth Choir iwill give' special music. Mayfield, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Hughes. Mr. and Mrs. Arvel Woods, sod Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Presley will lewve Saturday for New York City to ittend the national banquet at Electro lux Corporation at Waldorf Astoria Hotel. They will return Thursday. April 20.
