On Monday, May 28, at 8 P. M., Paul A Reid, president of Wes tern Carolina Teachers College, Cullowhee, will deliver the com mencement address in the gymna sium to the 60 seniors. Funeral services were held Monday at 4 p. m. in the Chapel of Townson Funeral Home with ?he Rev J. Alton Morris and the Esv W. H. Hampton officiating. Burial was In Sunset Cemetery. Torn *yk>r ^ Murphy, Mrs Fay B Mrs Mrs. Nancy Graves Is Taken By Death Mrs. Nancy Montgomery Graves, 70, of the Grape Creek section of Cherokee County, died at 3 a. m Sunday in a local hospital follow ing a week's illness. She was born October 5, 1879 at Grape Creek. She was the widow of John Alexander Graves whom she married in 1894, and was the mother of 11 children, nine of whom are living. Funeral services were held at 11 a. m. Monday in Grape Creek Baptist Church of Which she was a member. The Rev. L. B. Cbr nett and the Rev. J. Alton Morris officiated. Burial was in ttye church cemetery with Townson Funerti Home In charge. Grandsons. Broadus. Kennit, J. D. and Don Graves, Robert Wor ley and Boyce Carroll were pall bearers. Surviving are four sons, Bob. Lawson, Bascomb and Garland of Murphy; five daughters, Mrs. Fdna Worley of RabbinsviUe, Mrs. Haul Moore of Gastonia, Mrs. Fred Martin, Mrs. Oliver Carroll and Mrs. Mattie Baker, all of Murphy. 56 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. Kelvin Shivers, of Washington, D. C., president elect of Civitan international, was guest speaker at the charter night banquet of Murphy Civitan Club Friday eve ring, at First Methodist Church. He told the Civitans, 37 charter members, that they are expected to be interested in their com munity and the people, to take an active part in the work of the club, pay dues, be socially minded, take part in discussions before the club, carry out wished of majority, and keep their minds of the main ob jective?building good citizenship. He urged them to have fellowship, membership, finance, program, and project committees. The call to order was given by Toastmaster Eugene Benge of the Asheville Club, and the group tang, "America". The invocation was given by the Rev. Alfred Smith. President O. L. Anderson presented the following special guests: Bill Lancaster, Spartanburg, S. C., Miss Addie Mae Cooke, editor Cherokee Scout; Mack Pat ton. president of Lions Club; Frank Forsyth, president Cham ber of Commerce; Frank Craw ford, sheriff. Messages of congratulation were lead by A. D. Peacock, secretary treasurer of the Club. Officers were installed by G. O. Shepherd Asheville, former field secretary Civitan International, who told the officers and other members, "You cannot be a good Civitan unless you are a good citizen." D. W. Lambert, Asheville. gover nor elect of North Carolina Gis t-icf, presented the charter, giv ing the information that this club is No. 642. Earl Raiford, president Asheville Civitan Club, introduced the speaker, and also presented a gong and gavel to President An derson for the Murphy Club, as a gift from the Asheville Club.i Civitan members then gave the Civitan Creed. J. Douglas Robinson, treasurer of the Asheville Club, and Harry Gietzen, member of the Asheville Club, and Mrs. Benge attended the meeting. The civitans had their wives as special guests, also. Mrs. Lunsford Dies, In Local Hospital Mrs. Mary EI mar Lunsford, 76, tl' Murphy, Route 1, died at 7:30 a. m Monday in a Murphy hospi tal after a short illness. Funeral services were held at 11 a. m. Tuesday, in Upper Peachfree Baptist Church with the Rev. Andy Cloer officiating. Burial was In Moss Cemetery at Marble, with Townson Funeral Home in charge. Surviving are the husband. Townson state president of the North Carolina Funeral Directors and Burial Associations, presided over the 50th annual convention in Durham this week. Over 400 delegates were present at this meeting. The election of officers for the coming year was scheduled for Thursday morning (today). Murphy FFA Wins Second Place > i Murphy School's Chapter of Future Farmers of America won second place in a livestock judg ing contest conducted by the Nantalsala Federation of FFA clubs at the Mountain Experiment Station at Waynesville on April 29. Bethel won first place Murphy's team members were Guy Dockery, Garland Kephart, J. B. Gentry, and Ehner Taylor. Other teams competing were Franklin, Bryson City, Robbins ville, Waynesville, Fines Creek, Crabtree, Sylva, Cullowhge Glen ville, Hayesville, Clyde, and An drews. Murphy's dairy judging team, composed of Homer Raper. Lowin Nations, and Frank McDonald, won third place in the contest. Both Murphy and Bethel will compete in the district contest to be held May 6 in Hendersonville. Mr. Tal H. Stafford. District Super visor of thirty-seven Western North Carolina counties, will be .1 charge of the contest. Family Night To Be Observed By Methedists ? ?? Family Night will be observed at First Methodist Church Wed nesday. May 10, beginning at 6:30, with a pot-luck supper. Follow ing the meal inf j.mal group sing ing will be led by C. R. Freed. A filmstrip, "Is Ycur Home Fun? will be shown. Family Night this month is being observed as a par', of the Christian Ftmily Week emphasis. May 7-14 Buel Adams Is New Mayor Six Councilmen Are Elected Buel Adams R, was elected 4 mayor in the Municipal election here Tuesday, with a vote 5t \ defeating his opponent, Dr. George Dyer D, who received 417 votes. Webster Home Is Destroyed By Fire The house and furnishings of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Webster of Culberson were destroyed by fire early Sunday night. According to reports Mr. and Mrs. Webster had retired when the fire broke out end a neighbor. Charley Thomp son. rushed to the burning build ing to awake them. Community Meeting To Be Held Monday Local Bankers To Attend Convention Percy B. Fere bee, W. D. Whita ker and W. Frank Forsyth are the local bankers who plan to attend the 54th annual convention of the North Carolina Bankers at Pmehurst, May 7-10. More than 750 bankers are ex pected to attend the convention according to Fred W. Greene, Ex ecutive Secretary. Headquarters 'or the Convention will be at The Carolina Hotel. J REVIVAL, services Revival services are being held Fields of the Wood eaoh eve ning at 7 o'clock in the Sanctuary Hall. The services are being con ducted by the Rev. Melvin West, ' 3 year-old Evangelist of Lynch burg, Va. Mrs. Bill Gcntiy, Mrs. Don Gen try and Tommy Gentry have re turned from Akron, Ohio, where they visited relatives. A community meeting will be bold in the court room of the courthouse Monday, May 8, at 7:30 P. M. for the purpose of further ing the betterment of Murphy and this entire section. This meeting is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and Civl tan Club. The citizens of this entire section are urged to attend. The chief purpose of the meet ing is to find ways and means of arranging for a full time represen tative to promote Murphy indus tries and tourists attractions. It has been hoped for a long j time that Cherokee County could i have a representative acquainted with industries and businessmen who would work full time in an effort to locate industries for this entire section, hi umbers of plants have been located in Westerii \orth Carolina, however, no new plants have come to Murphy. Sherrill was toastmaster. Then a variety of events was pre sented. Barbara Reid introduced the Gypsy theme.of the program by singing "The' Gyipsy". Mrs. J. W. Davidson played as a piano rolo "Gypsy Serenade". Rosalind Stalcup. Glenda Ivie and Sally Morris sang "Gypsy Love Song"; Mrs. James Crook gave a humor ous reading, "Audible Punctua tion." This was followed by a nolo, "Golden Ear Rings" by i Rosalind Stalcup. and the rending of fortunes. Presbyterians To Observe Youth Sunday "Secret of a Pocket Knife" will Ke the subject of the Youth Sun day sermon at the Presbyterian Church Sum ay morning at 11 o'clock. The serrvice will be planned especially for the chil dren and young people of the congregation. The following young people will have part in the worship service: Hubert Sneed, Ids Brumby and Gordon Darnell. The Young People's Choir will present an anthem. Members of the choir are Carolyn Alexander, Mary Lou Gordon, Susie Miller, Joyce and Annette Strange, and Carol Sue Vaught.
