Frank Forsyth, president, pre yed over the meeting which was attended by a large crowd of interested business men and trumen and other citizens of this community and Andrews. W. M. Davis was elected tem porary treasurer of a fund that is being collected to secure a full liroe secretary for the organiza tion. Hubert Williams, chairman of a committee appointed to con tact Firms and individuals for pledges to the budget, reported that approximately $885 per month tad heen pledged. Cope of Char lotte were visitor^. - D.C. Nichols, 67 Taken Bv Death David Columbus Nichols, 67, died Thursday afternoon at his home, Route 1, Culberson, after a brief illness. Funeral services were held in Friendship Baptist Church Satur day with the Rev. Ledter Stowe of Suit, and the Rev. Thomas Truest of Culberson officiating. Clubs of Cherokee County are sponsoring a Rural Mail Box Improvement contest to beautify the rural com munities of the county. Joe E. Ray, Murphy Postmaster, Is giving $10.00 in prizes to the Clubs who do the most toward improving the rural mail boxes of their respective communities before the contest closes on June [ 30. Three prizes of six dollars, three dollars and one dollar are being offered. I The-rules for the contest are as follows: the correct height for a mail box should be obtained from the rural carrier, the box should T>e level and painted, the name of the person should be printed cn the box. with no numbers used, and the box diould be, located in the right place. TeacjiersHear Visiting Speakers Miss Julia Teasley, reading specialist, gave a lecture on 'Teaching Reading" to all teach cn in Cherokee Cougjy at a joint meeting last Wednesday. Miss Madeline Tripp of the State Department spoke briefly on pro motions. Miss Maggie Belle Kissefburg, supervisor of Cher okee County unit, was iin charge of the meeting which was held in the primary building of Mur phy school. Memorial Service Is At Oak Grove * A Memorial and singing will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, -May 28. The program will include regular services with a sermon by the pastor, the Rev. Fred Stiles, and decoration of the graves before noon. 'After lunch, which will be serv ed on the church grounds, choirs end singers from various com munities will take part in a song service. Delbert Byrum, pas tor of First Methodirt Church, has announced that his sermon tooic for Sunday morning at 11 o'clock will be, "Hie Peril of Judging" ind for Sunday evening, at 8 o' clock, "The Blessed Assurance". ATTENDAIT?Miss Joyce Cole man, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Coleman of Murphy, is shown above in the organdy gown which she wore as a sophomore attendant in the annual May Day exercises held on the Ftirman Uni versity campus, Greenville, S. C., Saturday, May 6. Miss Coleman's gown, made with a lace bodice and fcolero, was blue as were those of the two other sophomore attendants and she carried a basket of spring flowers. She was selected for the honor in elections held by her classmates who hase also chosen her as a Class Marshall for next year. (Furman News Bureau Photo). Rites Held For Mrs. Sherrill, 83 Mrs. Parilee Sherrill, 83, was taken by death at her home in Bryson City Tuesday, May 16. ?Mrs. Sherrill was born in Clay County and lived there until she uas 35 years old. She then moved to Bryson City. She was married to Ben Sherrill January 25, 1014. She is survived by two sons, D. H. Brown of Gastonia and Ben H. Brown of Murphy; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Sherrill and Mrs. Betty Ivy Lee Parrish both of Bryson City; seven grandchildren. 14 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at Ela Baptist Church Thursday (today) at 11 a. m. Burial will be in the family cemetery. District B. W. C. Federation Meets The W. (N. C. District B. W. C. Dale Thrash, Tenth | Division Highway commissioner. The progress of the work that is being done now and new contracts for paving this summer will be discussed. Frank Taylor, 26 Is Killed In Wreck Funeral services of Frank Tay- < lor, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Issac Taylor of Letitia were held last Tuesday in Bsmel Ga? with the Rev. Fred Stiles officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Taylor was killed Sunday, May 7, when bis car left the road and plunged down a 300 feet bluff near Ellijay, Ga He had spent most of his lifa at his home near Letitia. He is survived by his wife. Seniors Present R T. A. Program The monthly meeting of the PTA was held Monday at 7:30 p. m. in | the primary building, with Mrs. Robert Weaver, oresident, presid ing. The opening number was "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", and "Will You Remember", sung by Rosalind Stal cup, Sally Morris and Glenda Ivie. with Miss Mosehe Moore at the piano. Dorothy Shields, president of the senior class then took charge uf the program. "Holy, Holy, Holy," was sung by the seniors and the audience; the devotional was given by Vincent Crisp who read the 149th Psalm; the senior girls' chorus sang, "When Day is Done". The valedictorian. Tommy Alexander, and the salutatotiran, Larbara Adams were then intro duced; a piano solo. "Melody of Love", was played by Martha Chas tain. ? Bill Lovingood told about the seniors' trip to Washington, stat ing that the 'trip was made possi ble by selling magazine subscrip tions, selling at concessions and the senior play. Ellen Helton told of the trip to Atlanta, combining education and pleasure. The last will and testament was given by Doris Chastain, after which the olass song, written by Eddie Graham who won a contest last summer for the best song. Reports of committees were heard. The treasurer reported a balance of $293.88 in the treasury. Miss Jane Hill's room having bad the best average attendance for the year, was presented the trophy.* It was voted to buy an amplifier tor the school. Morrow, 75, Baptist minister, died at his home in Englewood, Tenn., Route 1, at ?1:16 p. m. Monday. Funeral services were held at Hopewell Baptist Church Wer*-?*}< day at 1 p. m. with the Rev. Wes ley Holcomh officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Townson Funeral Home In charge. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Morrow; four daughters, Mrs. Ken Williams of Four Mile Ky? Mrs. Nora Cummings of Everts, Ky., Mrs. W. T. Montgomery of Ranger. Mrs. Tom Bandy of Copperhill, Tenn.; three sons, Ralph of Cul berson, Willie of Englewood, and Charlie of Madisonville. 17 Bov Scouts Have Camp Trip Bob White and Hobart McKeever took 17 Murphy Boy Scouts to i Woods Farm on a camping trip last Friday. The boys went in a truck and a jeep and took a 2 mile hike after they arrived there carrying their full packs. They took their tents and sleeping bags and sipent Friday and Saturday n:ghts. On Saturday they built an under ground ice box and spent their | t:me swimming, pioneering, bridge building. and studying. John Jord an joined them Saturday. They returned home Sunday morning in time for Sunday School. White Speaks At Murphy School H. C. White, representative ot North Carolina Social Security, spoke to Murphy High School pupils last week explaining the many details connected with social -ecurity. In connection with his talk he showed a film which illu strated how the government keeps up with its 40.000,000 social security members. CAKE WALK The PeacMree P.-T. A. will sponsor a cake walk at Peachtree School Friday evening at 7:90. At this time officers for the coming year will be installed. The asso ciation urges everyone to bring a book for the library. Loudermdlk will be in charge. > The ninth Annual Murphy | Guernsey registered cattle sale will I be held at the .fair grounds here on Tuesday, May 23, beginning at 112:30 o'clock. It is sponsored by the Cherokee County Guernsey Breeders Association. A. Q. Ketner, secretary of the association, announces that 36 head of registered Guernsey cattle will be offered for sale at this time. He says that the association has consigned to the sale this year animals representing some of the test breeding of this section. Consignments are being made by the following farms: Grandvlew, N'ajesoo, Valleytown, Sky Manor. Shoal Fans. Eskdale, Rosewood, Green Acres, Riegeldale, Crain, Notla, Belmont View, Smithsnont. and Hamilton County. Jewell Holbrook Dies In Veterans Hospital In Ohio The body of Jewell Hollxrook, 24 of the U. S. Navy, who died Fri day morning in a veteran's hospi tal in Cleveland, Ohio, arrived in Murphy Tuesday, and funeral ser vices were held at 3 p. m. in Bethlehem Baptist Church alt Young Cane, Ga. Burial was in ?the church cemetery with military honors. * He is survived by the parents, Mi', and Mts. Floyd Holbrook; two brothers, J. M. and Bobby Holbrook of Akron, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Louis Keasier and Miss Gaynelle Holbrook, both of Akron. Town son Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Nunn Attends State Meeting Mrs. Johnsie Nunn left Saturday fur Raleigh to attend on Tuesday a meeting of the executive com mittee of the "North Carolina Superintendents of Public Wel fare. Mrs. Nunn is vice-president of the association of State Super intendents of Public Welfare. She I will attend a refresher course given' I to N. C.
