The street committee now is working on plans for paving of Hickory and McClelland Sts. and Valley River Avenue. 4-H Club Members Plan For Camp More than forty boys and girls from Cherokee County, a record number, will attend 4-H Club Camp the last week in June. They will be accompanied by Extension Agenst from here. For the first time these youngs ters will use the brand new 4-H Club Camp at Waynesville. Every thing possible is being done to as sure a good time for the boys and girls. They will enjoy swimming under the supervision of a life guard and swimming instructor. [They will participate in various out door and indoor sports and will enjoy nature study, forestry, crafts and plenty of good eats. Club members from Macon, Swain, Avery and Cherokee Coun ?ie? will attend camp together. She urges all who are mterested in the contest to ge' their, entries in soon, and not to wait until the deadline. The contest is open to all boys :.nd girls from fourth grade up, and essays may be Written on any phase of the Cherokee Indian life. Fssays should be typed or written with pen. They must be signed by the writer, giving both age and I graty? in school. Prizes consist of the following: First, five tickets to "Unto These I Hills", Cherokee drama: second, four tickets; third, three tickets: fourth, two tickets; and fifth, one ticket. Miss Phyllis Snyder New Regional Librarian Miss Phyllis Mai Snyder of I Fesno, Calif., and York, Penn., | will arrive here next week to be- j come librarian of the Nantahala Regional Library, with headquart ers in Murphy. She succeeds Mrs. Sarah Lloyd, who resigned almost two years ago to accept a position ? n Rome, Ga. Miss Snyder has had consider able library experience. From 1942 to 1947 she was chief librar ian with Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory, and from 1948 to the present time she has been read er's adviser with the Fresno Coun ty Free Library, Fresno, Calif. I She holds a B. S. in Education irom Miliersrvilie State Teachers College; a M. A. from University of Texas; and has completed resi dence requirements for M. L. S. at Columbia University. She comes 'o this work recommended highly for her qualifications, ability and usefulness. Expect To Organize Class A Reserve Unit Murphy now has an opportunity to have a Class A Army Reserve Unit. A total of 68 to 86 men must be enlisted before the unit can be oesignated Class A. During a recent Reserve Recruiting cam paign a total of 31 men from Cher okee County were enlisted in the Enlisted Reserve Corps. That makes a total of 51 members, with tl least 17 more needed to meet the quota. This unit will be Com pany "C" 347th Engineer Aviation' Battalion. This Company will be command id by Captain Kenneth L. West of Warne A recruiting team from Asheville, including Captain Cle ments and M/Sgt. Cashatt, was as sisted by Lt. Col. John Wrinn, Capt. Recreation Program Attracting Crowds Officials report that 108 boys r.nd girls took part in the Summer Kecreation program during the first full week of operation. The average afternoon attendance has teen 56. Until the local Bible Schools have completed their work, the recreation program will be held in the afternoon only. Begin ning Monday, June 26 a morning program also will be conducted. A total of 75 children attended the first swimming party sponsor ed by Irvin Green, director of the program, on Wednesday afternoon of this week. Transportation was furnished by the' program and Bus Company and by special agreement with the management of the An drews Pool, the cost of the entire trip was fifteen cents per child, including pool admission foe. Softball, volleyball, basketball, horse-shoes, paddlshall and bad minton, bubble-gum and ftahtng rcutasfs marked the first full week cf operation of the Summer Ree Prngrem under the dlrec t Irvin Groan assisted by Mrs. Green and Tommy Gentry. About 70 boys and girls were present on opening day. On open ing day Betty Jean Gibson and Douglas Beal won out over some mighty keen competition in a bub ble gum contest. Nettie Sue Dot* ery and Dale Barton were judged second best In the competition. The schedule for the coming week includes the opening of the inter-church Softball league, a swimming party to Andrews Fool, touch football and a horseshoe tournament. The Town of Murphy end Murphy Regal Club are co sponsors of the effort, and are asking that everybody in the com munity participate. All residents of Murphy are asked to clean up their premises, both homes and business places, and have the trash ready to be picked up by town trucks by Thursday. The trucks will be sent to all areas of town Thursday, Fri day and Saturday to collect the rubbish, states J. H. Bayless, clerk. Special emphasis is placed on making and keeping Murphy a clean town, for the purposes of beauty and health, as well as mak ing a good impression on visitors to the community. Baptist Revival Will Continue Through Sunday Revival services are in progress at First Baptist Church this week, with services being held daily at 9 a. m. and 8 p. m. The Rev. H. S. Sauls,' Mobile. Ala., is doing the preaching. Marvin Hampton, of Murphy, ministerial student, Furman University, Greenville, S C? and Miss Mary Nell Hawkins arc leading the singing; Mrs. J. V/. Davidson is organist, and Miss Moselle Moore, pianist and choir uirector. Services will continue through Sunday evening, announces the pastor. Rev. ,t. Alton Morris. Vacation Bible School commence ment will be held Friday morning, in connection with the 9 o'clock service. Preaching services will l.e held daily, including Saturday, at 9 a. m. and 8 p. m. Sunday School starts at 9:45 Sunday morning, and an effort Is being made to have the entire en rollment of the Sunday School present. Sunday morning worship service begins at 11 o'clock. Tourist Association Tours Hiwassee Lake State Park The Cherokee County Tourist Association made a tour of Hiwas see Lake State Park, the Naval Crdance facility, and the TVA Hiwassee dam power house Mon c ay afternoon. Jack Skinner, superintendent of the park, was host to the group. Following the tour the members j had a picnic supper on the picnic grounds of the park. With Presi dent Harry Seamon presiding, a -hort business session was held I after the meal. Meeting time of the association has been changed from Thursday to the second Monday night of each month. Advertising of this county " trough various channels was dis cussed. Presiden* Seamon announc ed that the information booth on the Square will be open soon, with two Indians from Cherokee in charge.
