At the end of his elementary school .work in the local elementary school he was awarded the Fanny Sue Hoblitzell memorial scholarship medal. Later attending Lumberton high school where he went to Mve with his aunt, Mrs. B. H. Stansel, a teacher in that school; and tor the further purpose of having the advantage of a high school band of which he was a member for four years, he graduated as valedictorian of his class. In his high school junior year he was a state representative in the American Legion oratorical contest. In his senior year he was president of the student body of his school. The same year he successfully qualified for member ship in the NROTC and was ap pointed a midshipman by the Sec retary of the Navy.
