David L. Davis, age 87, Chatta nooga, Tenn., was Instantly killed Friday at 9:10 a. m. according to SHP Lee J. Lance. His skull was crushed In a head-on collision be tween the '91 Plymouth he was driving and a '37 Ford Convertible Coupe driven by Thomas Garland, Route 2, Culberson. Mrs. D. L. Dayls, wife of the deceased, and Mrs. Burt Wills, mother of Mrs. Davis, were rld ? lng with the victim. Both women were taken to Murphy General Hospital Mrs. Davis sustained a possible skull fracture, lacerations of head and face and of right hip and fractures of both arms. Mrs. Wills sustained a fractured right ankle, multiple lacerations of the face and a possible rupture of the Tight eye. Garland sustained a fractured \ skull, fractured left knee and bro ken right arm. He was taken to Murphy General Hospital. Riding with Garland was Billy Arnold Hamlin who sustained a fractured upper Jaw and contusions of the head and face. He was taken to Petrle Hospital. The accident was Investigated by Patrolman Lance. Garland will be held for a Coroner's Jury. Repairs are now being made on the building. G. H. Farley Is New County Farm Agent G. H. Farley of Brevard has been * appointed by the Cherokee County j Commissioners, with the approval of the N. C. State Extension Ser vice, as county farm agent. He will succeed A. G. Ketner. who resigned effective July 1. Mr. Farley will assume his duties on August 1. A 1939 graduate of Berea Col lege, Berea. Ky? with a B. S. de cree, Mr. Farley has done gradu ate work at State College, Raleigh. He taught agriculture at Brevard College for five years; was man ager of a truck, livestock and bull farm near Greenville, S. C., four years, and since that time has been assistant agent in Henderson and Transylvania counties. Mr. Farley is married and has two children, a daughter, seven, and a son, one and a half. He is a Methodist and is a member of the Masonic Lodge. B. P. Jenkins, Western District Agent of Extension Servide, states that Mr. Farley has done an out standing job at assistant agent and that he believes he will make Cher okee County a good farm agent. Has Car Mishap Mrs. D. C. Elliott and her hus- | band, of Detroit, Mich., were in-; volved in an accident with their car Saturday. It occurred at Mau ney curve on Highway 19 east of Murphy about 6:30 a. irt. The dri ver losing control of the car, it turned over on the curve. Neither passenger was hurt beyond slight cuts. * j E. V.May To Be Ordained Sunday E. V. May, assistant to the pas tor of First Baptist Church, will be ordained at special services Sun day at 11 a. m. at the church. His father, the Rev. Ernest V. May, of Schulenburg, Texas, will preach the ordination sermon. His mother, Mrs. Ernest V, May, and his sis ter, Mrs. Bill Price, will attend Ihe ordination. At the evening service at 8 p. m. the subject of the pastor, Rev. J. Alton Morris, will be "What Do You Think of The Cross?" Parker, Area Super visor of the Employment Security Commission of N. C., Asheville, has Just announced the resignation of Glen T. Raper, Supervising In terriewer-in-Charge of the Mur phy Office, for the purpose of re turning to college to work for Mas ter's Degree in Education. Mr. Baper has been employed in the Murphy office ilnce March 1049. He was promoted to Supervising Interviewer In 1049, and to Super vising-ln-Charge In 1090. The vacancy created by Mr. Haper"! resignation Is being filled hy a parson from the Merit Sys tem's eligible register. The re placement will report for work In the Murphy offloe on August 1. DEATH SCENE?The '51 Plymouth at top is the ope in which David L. Davis of Chattanooga met his death early Friday morning, when it was in collision with the '37 Ford at bottom, which was driven by Thomas Garland. The accident occurred on U. S. 64, between Murphy and Copperhlll, a comparatively new piece of road which has been ' called the "death highway" because of many fatal- . itles which have occurred on it in recent months. I I George Farthing To Speak July 26 George Farthing will be the main speaker at a meeting of the Cherokee County Farm Bureau next Thursday. The meeting will be held in the County Courthouse at 8 p. m. Mr. Farthing is field representative for the American Farm Bureau Federation. Mr. Farthing will discuss what Washington is doing toward price controls atyi farm programs and where the American Farm Bureau stands on these issues. Wayne Abernathy, President of Cherokee County Farm Bureau, has asked that all members attend and welcomes nonmembers to the meeting. Refreshments will be served. L^ala Hyatt Jailed Lala Hyatt of Hot House town ship was arrested Tuesday on a warrant charging her with arson. The warrant was issued by W. J. Hilton of that, township, and Lala Hyatt was brought to the county jail at Murphy. The warrant alleg es that she caused the fire which burned the barn owned by Marcus Bell. ? Injured In Wreck Charles Hedden was brought to Petrie Hospital about 7 a. m, Wednesday as the result of a truck crash near Blairsville, Ga. Highway 64, 1 7 miles west of Murphy, reports State Highway Patrolman Lee J. Lance. William Allison Sherrill, Sr., 45, of Murphy Jied before an ambulance reached the wreck. Homer Roberscn and Dennis Harrison Trout were rushed to Murphy General Hospital where IYout died at 1:16 p. m. and Roberson died at 2:55 p. m. The fourth man, William T. Teas, Jr.., was taken to RckJda-Van Gorder Hospital at Andrews. Teas was driving a '50 Chevro et, traveling east, and is said by Patrolman Lance to have been on be wrong side of the road. He solllded with a '51 Ford driven by ilierrill. Riding with SherriU were lomer Roberson, 43, of Route 1, Murphy, and Dennis Trout, 28, of loute 1, Brasstown. Sherrill suffered severe internal njuries, fractures of ribs, thigh, inkles, and wrists and multiple scerations of the hands. Rober ;on suffered a fractured skull, in ernal Injuries, fractures of left eg and thigh. Trout suffered a ractured skull and Internal ln uries. Teas suffered internal injuries ind was taken to Andrews. He will ie charged with reckless driving. Iriving on the wrong side of the -oad, and being Involved in an ac cident causing death, according to Lance. He was a prominent business man and had been a partner In the Burch-SherriH Motor Co. since its establishment a few years igo. He was a member of First Baptist Church, a past president )f Murphy Lions Club, a member jf the Murphy school board, a Masonic lodge member, and mem ber of the board of directors of the Murphy Boy Scout council. Funeral services were held Thursday (today) at 3 p. m. in First Baptist Church. The Rev. J. Alton Morris and the Rev. R. Del bert Byrum officiated, and burial was in Sunset Cemetery. Ivie Funeral Home was In charge. Pallbearers were Joe Ray, Dr. W. A. Hoover, Frank Ellis, J. D. Burch, Harry Seay, Cecil Mor gan, J. N. Bo ling and Jack Sutton, Jr. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Flonnie Montelth SherrlU; two sons, W. A. Jr., 18, and Jimmy, 9, of the home; the father, A. W. Sherrill of Cullowheer and two sisters, Mrs. Faye Morgan of Ela and Mrs. Harry Seay of Bryson City. Funeral services for Dennis Trout will be held Friday at 2:30 D m. at Ogden, the Rev. Ham Coffey, the Rev. Henry Brown and the Rev. F. R. Davis officiating. Townson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Lewis, a former owner of the Murphy Cafe, waa arrested at 6:15 p. m. Wednesday, according to Deputy Sheriff Buren Grant and State Highway Patrolman Jack Longford. He Is charged with driv ing while drunk, assault with in tent to kill, attempted assault and cutting.
