tonio, Is the world's largest air
force base, site of Air Force basic
training, for men and women,
headquarters of the Human Re
source Research Center, and home
->f AF's Officer Candidate School.
His basic training has prepared
him for entrance into Air Force
technical training and for assign
ment in specialized work. The
course included a scientific eval
uation of his aptitude and inclina
tion for following a particular vo
cation and career.

Sick In Andrews
Mrs. Sidney Barker of Raleigh,
formerly of Andrews, who under
went an operation in a Raleigh
Hospital last week has returned
to her home where her condition
is good.
Miss Carolyn White returned
last week from a Murphy hospital
where she spent several days.
John King, who suffered a brok
en hand several days ago, is rest
ing well at his home.
Claud Bradley, who has been in
a Hospital in Emmittsburg, Md.,
for the past five months as a re
sult of a broken foot, returned
home this week.
Mrs. W. A. Hyde, who underwent
a minor operation at Rodda-Van
Gorder Hospital last weeH, is re
cuperating nicely at her home.
Charles Solesbee is quite ill at
a Bryson City hospital.
Mrs. Bruce West, who under
went a major operation at Rodda
Van Gorder Hospital, is much im
proved.
Harve M. Whitaker underwent

Asheville Tuesday.
Mrs. Dillie Raxter has returned
to her home after spending sever

Joe McGuire who was a patient

turned Thursday to his home
where he is doing well.

400-Pound Bear
Adds Interest
To Field Trip
A recent field trip taken by Mrs
Joe Sursavage and her eighth
grade class to the Andrews Water
shed turned out to be more than
was expected as the group came
upon the climax of a bear hunt
that caused much excitement and
resulted In quite a discussion of
the finer points of bear hunting.
The group were making an on
the-spot survey of water facilities
when they met the hunters with
the 400-pound bruin.
The hunters from Andrews,
Murphy and Tennessee told the
students about the hunt and the
kill.
The bear was killed a few hun
dred yards from the water shed
reservoir about 3V4 miles from
Andrews.

Has 320 Members
The annual membership drive of
the Andrews P. T. A', has closed
with a paid membership of 320.
Mrs. Ruth Starr Pullium, chairman
of the drive in school, announces
that prizes were awarded to Mrs.
Joseph Sursavage's eighth grade
who brought in 55 members, Mrs.
Ruth Starr Pullium's second grade
with 43 members, and Mrs. Bertha
McGulre's 6th grade with 42 mem
bers.
Methodists Hear
Negro Teacher
Week of Prayer and Self-Denial
services were held at Andrews
Methodist Church Friday after
noon. _
Mrs. E. L. Kirk had charge of
the worship service using the top
ic "Thy Will Be Done". The pro
gram opened with scripture read
ing followed by hymns a^d pray
ers, and a talk on the topic.
Mrs. John H. Christy presented
Mrs. Lillie D. Love, teacher in
the Andrews Negro school, who
told the group of her experiences
in Allen High School in Asheville
an dexpressed her appreciation to
Methodism for making such a
school possible, and for giving
Negro children an opportunity for
an education. She told of the spiri
tual atmostphere that prevails in
the school and said that the stu
dents receive training there fhat
will remain with them through life.
A part of the contributions made
at this meeting go to 4his school
to help build a badly needed dor
mitory.
The meeting was closed with
prayer.

At Junior Club
The Junior Womaifs Club of
Andrews met Tuesday evening at
the Junaluska Terrace Hotel. Miss
Trilby Glenn, president, presided.
The club will collect clothing for
the needy families of the commun
ity, participate in a drive for the
Children's * Home Society, send
Care packages to Korea, help with
Bloodmobile drives, and other pro
jects in the community. There was
discussion concerning a tonsil clin
ic and giving lunches to underpri
vileged children.
Mrs. Wm. E. Hall, arts and crafts
chairman, who had charge of the
program, introduced Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Kester from the John C.
Campbell Folk School at Brass
town. Mr. Kester talked on the
School, telling the group that the
Folk School is an effort in adult
education in view of helping men
and women help themselves. A
cordial Invitation was given by Mr.
Kester to visit the school anytime.
He had a display of carvings,
wooden bowls carved with hand
lathes, and metal display; he told
of the many more things that could
be learned at the school.
After the program the hostesses,
