Miss Wells was the State garden win ner. vV '? Sam D. Kaylor Dies In Fall From Scaffold Sam D. Kaylor, 34, Route 1, Cop perhlll, Tenn., was killed Thursday afternoon while working at the H. Bomb plant in Akin, S. C. He was a steel rigger and was on a scaf fold, 80 feet high. The scaffold gave way and he fell the 80 feet. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p. m. Sunday in Wolf Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Hugh Van Sprlggs officiated and burial was la the church cemetery with Townson Funeral Home in charge. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mae Slmonds Kaylor; two daugh ters, Virginia and Clarice, and three sons, Ray, Howard and Da vid; the mother, Mrs. Minnie Kay lor; five brothers, Floyd, Andrew, Kenneth and McKlnley of Mineral Bluff, and Ottis, of Copperbill; four sisters, Nettie, Edith, Be mice and Alice, of Copperhill. Commissioners Re-Elect Shields And McKeever Monday the Board of Commis sioners re-elected County Accoun tant-B. -b.-Shields and County at torney Hobart McKeever for an other-term of three years. It was decided to sell the P. E. McGill property in Nottley Town ship to Charlie Garland. The(auditor's annual report was made to the board. County Ac countant Shields says that no part of the report Is ready for publi cation. CANCER CLINIC TO MEET The Cancer Clinic meets at C. J. Harris Hospital, In Sylva, every Friday. Registration hours are from 9 to 10:19 a. m. The Division of Cancer Control of the N. C. State Board of Health provides examinations for cancer to women above 35 and men above 40 years old and to any person of any age with symptoms tf cancer. Almond Injured When Highway Truck Overturns Jack Almond, 38, of Marble, Buf fered a brain concuaalon and pos sible skull fracture when the State Highway Commission truck, which he was driving, overturned on a curve on Highway 64 In the dty Umlts east of Murphy on*"Patter son Hill", Friday afternoon about 9:13. J. | Lance, who Investigated the acci dent, reported that Math Leather wood, Route 1, Murphy, and James Mabry, Route 2, Murphy, who were riding In the truck, escaped seri ous Injury. Musical Program Planned For Men's Meeting A cunrterly Pubd(strict meeting' of Methodist Men in Cherokee Clay and Graham Counties will meet at Murphy First Baptist Church Friday, December 7, at 7 p. m., with Olen Stratton presid ing. Bates, Jr. Accepts Position With Local U.C.C. Edson E. Bates, Jr., of Bryson City has accepted the position as supervising interviewer in charge of the Employment office here. He assumed his duties on Monday, succeeding Blanch Beam who was transferred back to Charlotte af ter a few months here. Mr. Bates is originally from Ashevllle. He is married to the ormer Miss Buell Woodard of Uryson City, and the couple have one child, Allen, 15 months old. lie has only recently completed a .our of duty with the Air Force at Alexandra AFB in Louisiana, and served two and a half years dur ing World War XI. He is a past president of Bryson City Lions Club, is active in the American Le gion, and in the Methodist Church. The couple plan to move around ?he first of the year to Murphy to make their home. Morris Announces Baptist Program The Rev. J. Alton Morris has an nounced the week's program for ?he Murphy Baptist Church. The XI a. m. sermon topic will be "God's Spirit Is Working Today", and at 7:30 p. pi. the topic will be This Is The Way". The schedule for choir practice is as follows: Cherub Choir at 3:15 Tuesday, Junior Choir at 3:15 Tuesday and Friday. Youth Choir at 3:15'Monday and Wednesday, end Adult Choir at 8:30 p. m. Wed nesday and 7 p. m. Thursday. Monday evening at 7 the Eli zabeth Hale and Ruth Bagwell Circles will meet at the church for pat luck supper, a program, and Christmas party. Robert Allen Is Killed By Auto West Liberty "M" Night Is December 10 Mrs. J. A. Fire Damages Building And Destroys Home l Murphy firemen have answered i three calls to fires since Saturday. The first fire did about $2,000 damage to a small building cover ing a hoist at Hitchcock Corpora tion's talc mine Saturday at 5 a. m Earl Van Horn, assistant super intendent, said that the damage vas partially covered by insurance. The old Elliott home, located at Peachtree and owned by Mrs. Ruth Carringer, was burned to the ground about 1:30 a. m. Tuesday. An alarm was turned in, but fire men were unable to save the build ing. A false alarm was answered in | Factory Town Wednesday morning. The flue fire' had been extin guished when firemen arrived. Pfc. Robert Allen, Jr., 33. ol Murphy was killed Sunday when he was struck by a taxi cab while walking along the highway near Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo. The body was returned to Mur phy Wednesday escorted by Sgt. Tabor of Murphy, who left here with Allen- in a National Guard unit formed here under the com mand of Lt. Charles Shytle. The company was called into active duty last summer. Funeral services were held to day (Thursday) at 10:30 a. m. in the chapel of Townson Funeral Home. The Rev. Thomas Truett officiated and burial was in Sun set Cemetery. Members of the Joe Miller El kins Post of the American Legion served as pallbearers. Survivors include the father; three sisters, Mrs. Ray Johnson of Murphy, Mrs. Bob Harper of Cop perhill, Tenn., and Mrs. Paul Ms haffey of Ashevllle, and two bro thers, Bill Allen of Akron, Ohio, and Sgt. John K. Allen with the U. S. Air Force at Fort Worth, Texas. Fred Johnson Getting Petition For Beer Election Members of the Town Council at their regular monthly meeting Monday night discussed a request by Fred Johnson, Sr., to circulate a petition requesting an election regarding the sale of beer in the Town of Murphy A notice was posted Tuesday that Johnson began circulating the petition December 4 (Tuesday). The notice states that the petition is not to be considered an expres sion of opinion of the mayor. Town Clerk, or any member of the Town Board or Council. It is signed by John Bayless, Town Clerk. Johnson states that the petition has already been signed by 300. The number of signers needed to call an election is 448. According to Miss Hattie Axley, secretary, no mention of the men pcretary, no mention of the board discussion regarding the petition was to be made in the minutes. The Board confirmed the em ployment of Fred Johnson, Jr., and Glenn Bates as permanent po licemen, and Fred Hall, extra po liceman. Neil Sneed is chief of police. Pearl Harbor Day Observed Here By Civitan Club In observance of Pearl Harbor Day, Murphy Civitan Club was shown a film entitled, "The Bomb ing of Pearl Harbor", at its regu lar meeting Monday evening. The club voted to have its regu lar meeting, which Is December 17, at Duke's Lodge. Wives of the members and other guests will be invited, and a good attendance is expected. An excellent program is being planned followed by infor mal games and dancing. Jack Bar uett, George Dyer and Sam Hard lag were appointed as a program committee. A. D. Peacock was ap pointed to head the decoration committee. The project committee decided to discontinue the waste paper collec tions until further notice. Dr. W. R. Gossett read the "Civitan Creed". Lee Lance had as his guest Ray Heffner, and My '?on Jensen's, the Rev. Rhett Win ters. "Arts And Music" Is Sub ject Of P. T. A. Program Mrs. Martha Adams, program chairman, presented a program on, "Arts and Music" at the Murphy P. T. A. meeting Monday evening in the Primary building. Miss Marie Travis prepared for the group some units on art that have been done in the high school, stating that several prizes have been won by her art students. Mrs Emily Davidson and Frederick Schley were in charge of the music and played several numbers, giv ing a background of some Christ mas Carols. Mrs. Glenn Bates led the group in singing several songs. Mrs. T. A. Case had the Devoti nal. Mrs. Ben Palmer reported 88 members in the asociatlon. A group voted to continue treat ing i the school children this year as they have done in the past This is usually done on the day the school turns out for the Christ mas Holidays. Is sponsor ing a Family Night Friday, Dec ember 7 in the school gymnasium. The program will begin at 7 o'clock. It Is well-planned and will not last too long. Several numbers will be played by the school band under the direction of Frederick -Schley. The Rhythmic Class will perform under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Don Ascar Besque, of Western Carolina Teachers Col lege. The Peachtree Sauare Dance Team will give an exhibition for 'he group. Immediately following 'he program there will be square dancing for everyone. There wilf be a small admission. Refreshments, that have been con tributed by members of the P. T. A. v ill be on sale during the even I ing. { All proceeds taken in will go di lectly toward the Christmas Party i for the school children. Miner Announces Church Program The Rev. C. Z. Miner of the Free Methodist Church has an nounced the week's program. The 11 a. m. sermon topic Sunday is "Spirituality". Y. P. M. S. will meet at 7 p. m. and the evange listic service is at 7:30 p. m. There will be a prayer meeting Wednesday and a cottage prayer meeting Friday, both at 7:80 p. m. The Light and Life Hour may be heard at 1 p. m. Sunday over W. O. S. T.. Atlanta. This program has taken highest honors award ior the fourth successive year. Byrum Announces Church Services "Does Being a Christian Mai Any Difference?" will be the 11 'Ministers Are Enrolling For Three Courses Ministers of the West Liberty and Western North Carolina Bap tist Pastors' Conference voted Monday at a meeting In Murphy to establish a full-fledged seminary extension department In Murphy. The new department Is to be an extension of the three largest Southern Baptist Seminaries: Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas; New Orleans Baptist Theological Semi nary, New Orleans, La.; and The Southern Baptist Seminary, Louis ville, Ky. Headquarters of the Ex tension work la in Jackson, Miss. Dr. Lee Gal'.man, Jackson, Miss., is the director. The name of the new depart ment will be "Baptist Seminary Extension Center". The Bev. A. G. Brooks, field worker for the West ern North Carolina Baptist Asso ciation, was chosen as director at the center. The Rev. Floyd B. Clark, missionary in West Liberty Association, was chosen dean of the school. The Rev. Fred B. Luns ford was chosen as registrar and treasurer. Three faculty members were chosen to teach In the school. The Rev. John A. Richardson, Jr., pastor of Andrews Church, will teach Old Testament The Rev. J. Alton Morris, pastor of Murphy Church, will teach New Testament and the Rev. Joreph G. Miller of Bryson City will teach a course In preaching. Mr. Brooks will assist these teachers. Twelve ministers already have enrolled in thf school which will begin classes Tuesday night, Jan. 1, 1952, in First Baptist Church of Murphy. Classes will meet every Tuesday at 7 p. m. for the dura tion of each term. It was decided that laymen and women interested In taking these I courses are to be invited. A very i low cost of $3 for matriculation I and $5 registration fee for each course will he the total expenses of each student, except for text books. Seminary credit will be given the students for all class work done. If the student holds a col lege degree the credit will count toward a B. D. degree in the South ern Baptist Seminaries. Credit to ward a certificate will be given to students who do not hold a col lege degree. All Interested students regardless of previous education are invited to attend these classes. Application is being made for Director Brooks to get the Seml j nary Extension Center with its or | ganization and faculty officially ap 1 proved by the Seminary Extension Department, Jackson, Miss. It is believed that this approval will be received soon. Frank Coker [Dies Wednesday Frank Coker, 56, died at 11:30 a. m. Wednesday at his home in Voting Harris, Ga., following an ex tended Illness. He was a son of the late W. A. and Nancy Coker, one of Towns County's prominent families. Until his health failed, he was fn charge of building operations at Young Harris College. Funeral services will be held Fri day at 2 p. m. in Sharp Memorial Methodist Church at Young Harris. The Rev. Harry Mitcham, pastor of Lakewood Heights Method!-1 Church of Atlanta, will officiate, burial will be in Union Cemetery with Townson Funeral Home in charge.
