Man OF Many Talents Conducts Baptist Revival Here June 1-15 White Church Development Club Elects Officers The recently organized White Church Ciub held its third meet ing May 23 at the White Church School. The president, Harest King, presided. This community completed their organization at this meeting. The following officers were elected: 1-resident, Harest King; vice-president. Elected To WNC Health Post Miss Willie P. Lovlngood. senior health nurse of Cherokee County, was elected secretary-treasurer of the western district North Caro lina Public Health Association when the association held its an nual meeting at Blowing Rock Friday. Others from Cherokee County at the meeting were: Dr. J. E. Donlan. health officer for Chero kee. Clay and Graham counties, and Dave Moody, district sanita rian. Miss Helen Ghormley, senior health nurse, represented Graham County. FILMS OP HOLT LAND The Rev. H. K. Sulleman, mis sionary to Palestine, will show films of the Holy Land at Harris Chapel Church of God Sunday, June 1. at T:SO p. m Frank 0. Brown Receives Degree The Rev. Frank O. Brown re ceived his B. D degree at the graduation exercises of Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur. Ga.. in a class of 55 Monday. Bac calaureate services were held Sunday. Mr, Brown, having accepted the pastorate of the Presbyterian Church here, will assume his du ties Sunday preaching at II a. m. He will move his household roods here next week and he and Mrs. Brown will occupy the manse. Brown is a native of Lauder dale. Miss. After graduating from Lauder dale High School in 1944, he was employed by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation. Pascagoula, Miss. Afer overseas duty with the Navy, he was discharged in 1946. His B. A. degree was received from Millsaps College, Jackson. Miss . where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and Omicron Delta Kappa society. In 1950 he was married to Miss Sarah Jane McElroy. daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. W. Frank Mc Elroy, missionaries in Belgian Congo, Africa. Suit has succeeded George H. Sutton as superintendent of Hl wassee Lake State Park. Mr. Sut ton has been transferred to Hang ing Rock. Mr. Suit has been maintenance I superintendent at the park since | it opened in 1048. SINGING CONVENTION The regular annual singing con vention will be held at Shady I Grove Baptist Church Sunday, | June 1. All singers are Invited. bible School Begins On Monday Dr. Carl Bassett of Loss Angeles. Calif., will conduct the revival at Murphy First Baptist Church June 1-15. Dr. Bassett is known through out the' U. S. as Three-in-One I Evangejist, Chalk Artist and Trom bonist. Dr. Bassett will have full charge of the preaching and song service every evening. He leads a short song service with his trombone. There will be no choir at the night services. He will preach two ser mons on Sundays and one each night during the two weeks. Dr. Bassett draws a large colored chalk picture each night. He gives the picture to the one who brings the most people to the service. During the two weeks of the re vival Vacation Biblo School will be held. Registration and a parade are scheduled for Friday at 10 a m. Beginning Monday Bible School will start at 9 a. m. daily. Sell $100 Worth Poppies In Murphy Mrs. Kathleen Davidson, chair man of the Poppy Day sale spon sored by the Murphy unit of the American Legion Auxiliary has announced that approximately S100 was realized for the rehabil itation of veterans and their fam ilies and for child welfare. Mrs. Avis Hoover is president of the Murphy auxiliary; Mrs. Rocelyn Burgess, secretary; and Mrs. Leila Sims Treasurer. Judy Cook won first prize of $2 for selling the greatest number of poppies, and Becky Hoover was presented second prize of $1. To Get $2,980,34 In TVA Taxes Cherokee County will' have re ceived $2,980.34 from the Tennes see Valley Authority In monthly payments of taxes or payments In lieu of taxes when the TVA fiscal year ends June 30. Cherokee County is one of five counties to receive the payments, a total of $9,053.71. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hyatt and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Phillips at tended the funeral of Mrs. Ida Ramey which was held at 2 p. m. in Franklin Tuesday. Mrs. Ramey was the mother of Mrs. Edna Ramey Hall of Royal Oak, Mich. Saturday Persons presenting themselves to vote shou'd give their names to the registrar and wait until he has checked the registration book. Voters must leave the polling place after voting. Challengers may step into th? polling room to challenge, but after doing so, they must re tire immediately, and any person who is allowed to vote after being challenged must write his name or. the back of all of his ballots. There are no official markers, but persons needing any assistance should come to the polls with a member of their immediate family ifather, sen, mother, grandfather. Byrum To Speak On "The Danger Of Uselessness" The Rev. R. Delbert Byrum. pastor of Murphy First Methodist Church, will speak on "The Dan ger of Usetessness" Sunday at 11 a. m. Sunday School will begin at 9:45 a. m. A youth meeting will be held at 6 p. m. "Fishers of Men" will be the topic of Mr, Byrum's evening ser mon. Mid-week prayer service will be hold Wednesday at 8 p. m. James Chadwick will conduct the service in the pastor's absence. Choir re hearsal will be held following the prayer service Children's Choir rehearsal will be held Friday afternoon, June 6. and each succeeding Friday at 1 p. m All rehearsals are at the church. "Country Parson" Is Released The latest picture released by Astor Religious and Educational Pictures is "Country Parson", the life story of a minister. John Heal plays the part of Pastor Ri'ter. Others in the cast are Paul Guilfoyle. Mrs. Adeline De Walt Reynolds. William Gould. A1 Bridge and William Bakewell. all capable character actors of Hollywood. Casting and filming were supervised by Christian clergymen and laymen. grandmother, daughter, brother or sister1. Bueck of Murphy was elect ed Lions governor for district 31A at the annual convention of North Carolina Lions Clubs In Waynesvllle at the final business session Tuesday afternoon. Among those from Murphy at tending the convention May 29, 26 and 27 were: Mr. and Mrs. R. M. White, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Easley, Mr and Mrs. H. G. Elkins, >Mr. and Mrs. H. Bueck and son, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Patton, Mr. and Mrs. Loren Davis and chil dren, Dickie and Judy, and Dale Lee C. A. SMITH RICHARD MAUNEY Summer Program Starts Monday Green, Sims Direct Activities The annual summer recreation program in Murphy will start Monday at 2 p. m under the di rection of Irvin A. Green, with the assistance of Ray Sims. A steering committee consisting of Hobart McKeever. Joe Ray. Mrs. I W A. Hoover, Jim Ed Hughes and Ben Palmer, with another member .to be announced at a later date, | has been selected. This committee will make -solicitations for funds to carry on the program. "The re sponse last year was very good, but it is hoped that everyone will contribute to this program this year, says Mr. Green. The program will consist of a | wide variety of athletics, such as volley ball, soft ball, baseball, swimming, badminton, h o rse shoes, ping pong, basketball shoot ing and other activities. The opening day will feature a mass meeting of all the young people of Murphy. Refreshments will be served, gnd there will be some games. ? Morning activities for the first two weeks will be somewhat lim ited due to Vacation Bible School at the Baptist Church. The recreation program and the library are working out a story hour to be held once a week starting Friday. June 6. at 2 p. m. at the gymnasium, with the as sistance of Miss Josephine Heigh way and Miss Phyllis Snyder. This will be the vacation reading Club of the Explorers Reading Club. Friday is registration day. "If the recreation program con tinues to improve as it has in the past two years it will be some thing worth continuing for the future, and we feel that this year it will double in size and activity for the young people," says Mr. Green. Auxiliary, Legion To Have Joint Meeting Thursday Unit No. 96 of the American Legion Auxiliary will meet Thurs day, June S, at 7:30 p. m. The American Legion is asked to meet Jointly with the Auxiliary at this time. Refreshments will be served by the Auxiliary. The Auxiliary will show a full color sound motion picture of the 33rd American Legion Conven tion In Miami, Fla., at this meet ing All members of the Auxili ary and the Legion are asked to attend and bring along a guest. TO SHOW FILMS A Palestinian will show films of Palestine at Church of God, Mur phy, Saturday, May 11. The pas tor, the Rev. R. O. Wilson, ex tends en invitation to everyone. Israel Powell, Retired Farmer, Commits Suicide Israel O'Dcll Powell, 66-year old retired farmer, was killed by a shot-gun blast at 6 p. m. Wed nesday in the home of his daugh ter, Mrs. Fred Griffith of Route 1, Murphy, in Clay County. Acting Coroner Noah Johnson, termed Powell's death a suicide. Powell had been ill for the last four years and had been confined to his bed for the last six months He was in the house alone at the time, his daughter having gone out to feed the chickens when she heard the shot Return ing to the house she found her father had gotten out of bed and shot himself in the head. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in Fodder Creek Baptist Church at Hlawassee, Ga. The Rev. J. F. Nichols officiated and burial was in the church cem etery with Ivie Funeral Home in charge. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Griffith are five daughters, Mrs. Esther Lover of Clayton. Ga., Mrs. Laura Mooney of Baltimore, Md . Mrs. Betty Helton of Gaines ville. Ga.. Mrs. Sue Coffey of Cov ington. Ga., and Miss Laudine Powell of Gainesville, Ga.. and four sons, Huber and C. D. of New Orleans, La., Thomas, serv ing with the Army in Japan, and O'Dell of Gainesville. Fire Destroys Peacock Home The home of Mr. and Mrs A. D. Peacock situated about four miles west of Murphy on U. S Highway 64 was destroyed by fire about 4 p. m. Thursday. The Pea cocks recently purchased the home from J. H. Ellis. Mr. Peacock said the cause of the fire was undetermined. The Murphy fire department was called, but was unable to save the building. Almost all of the household goods was saved. The five-room house was insured for 57.500. according to Mr. Peacock. He said that it would require $9,000 to rebuild the house, and that sinoa purchasing the house he had made improvements cost ing $3,000. Peacock represents the Pilot Life Insurance Company here, and is operating a nursery at the soene of the fire. Mrs. Peacock owns and operates a florist shop in Murphy. The committee on Evangelism of the W. N. C. Baptist Association held a meeting tonight (Thursday! it 7:30.
