At Murphy Unit
On First Dav
Community-wide X-ray survey
began on Tuesday, Aurust 5, with
322 getting a chest x-rav at the
Murphy Unit parked near the
courthouse. The two units at Mar

undressing, and takes only two
minutes.

School Children
Must Be Immunized
Parents of all children who are
entering school this fall are warn
ed by the Health Department that
unless a child is immunized against
diptheria and whooping cough, he
or she will not be allowed to en
ter school this fall.
The department suggests that
parents who have not had their
children immunized see their phy
sician immdiately.
Catholic Church
To Be Dedicated
Oedication rites for the new
Saint Williams Roman Catholic
Church will be conducted at the
church Tuesday. August 12, at
10:38 a m. bv the Most Reverend
Vincent S. Waters. D. D.. Bishop
of Raleigh. The church is located
on the Andrews-Murphy Highway
near the Murphy city limits.
Open house will be held Sunday,
August 10, 3.30 to 5 p. m. The
public is Invited to attend. Vest
ments and articles used In the
various ceremonies will be dis
played and will be explained by
members of the clergy.
Two masses have been celebrat
ed in the recently completed
church Father Lawrence Newman,

The Murphy Baptist Seminary
Center will begin the fail semest
er Tuesday, August 26. at 7 p.
m. in the First Baptist Church
at Murphy.
Last spring. February 1 through
April 25. the school held its first
semester of classes with courses
in New Testament, Old Testament,
and Preaching. This year there j
will be a course In New Testament j
on the life and work of Paul the
Apostle. This course will be taught
by the Rev. J. Alton Morris, pas
tor of the First Baptist Church.

Three Injured When
Lightning Strikes
During the severe electrical
storm Monday evening, Mrs. Carl
Derreberry, age 27, of Andrews,
her seven-month-old baby and' her
i brother. Gordon Luther, were hos
pitalized due to injuries received
! when lightning entered their
home.
Mrs. Derreberry was bathing
the baby near the kitchen sink
when the lightning bolt entered
the open door, ripping the rug.
and apparently jumping to the
sink She said that she was stunn
ed and did not se? the flash. How
ever, her husband who was in the
same room saw the flash. Gordon
Luther, who was sitting near Mrs.
Derreberry was knocked from his
chair with considerable force. An
v.hcr brother had started to fill
an ice tray when the tray was
knocked from his hand. He was
uninjured.
The baby suffered only a small
burn. Gordon Luther received
bruises and shock. They were both
dismissed from the hospital Tues
day. (Mrs. Derreberry remained in
the hospital suffering from burns
?nd shock. Her condition, however,
is much improved.

Vacation Bible School is being

Church of Andrews this week and
continuing through next week.

opened Monday with an enroll

Mr. Boggs is founder of the
"Man and Boy Movement" started
in Dallas in June 1946. In Novem
ber of 1946 the movement was
adopted by the Texas Baptist Bro
therhood Convention in thetr
state meeting as one of the bro
therhood objectives.
In August of 1947 the founder
was invited to present the move
ment to the ' rotherhood leaders
of the Southern Baptist Conven
tion. asembled. at Ridgecrest. Af
ter it was presented it was adopts
ed as an objective of the Brother
hood of the Southern Baptist Con
vention The movement is a sim
ple plan to get a man, who is a
member of a church brotherhood,
to find an unenlisted boy and get
him into Sunday Scbool.
The Rev. J. Alton Morris, pas
tor of the local church, urges all
men to come and bring a boy.

evening. He urged the Civitans to
help spread the word around about

To Be August 21
The Summer Recreation Pro
gram is sponsoring a third annual
Soap Box Derby Thursday, August
21, at 2 p. m. This derby is to be
held on McClellan Street. The pro
gram will begin with a parade at
1 p. m. through town.
Each boy must build his own
wagon, and each entrant will only
be allowed one wagon to be enter
ed in th? derby. The first prize
will be a $50 War Bond. Second
and third prizes will be cup*. In
terested merchant* have mad*
these prizes possible. ;
