With the owning of (mm the do duouj tree* will begin to lose their leaves. This often present* ? problem for the home owner, both In town end country, who went* to have a neat yard, lawn end gar The usual .impulse is to rake up the leaves and burn them or to rake them Into the street and have the city truck east them away. But as deficient as our soils are in organic matter burning leaves Is a wasteful procedure. It la true, of j course, that the leaves must be raked off of the lawn?graia esp ecially newly planted graaa-or they I will smother the grass. The thing ' to do is to rake the leaves and make a leaf compost. Pile and rot them so that they can be spread on the garden and incorporated with the soil or used as a mulch around shrube-espectal ly azaleas. Leaves are difficult to rot U they are lust raked up into a targe pile. The compost pile should be built in layers about a foot deep. Each layer should be thoroughly wet down and a small amount of a' fertilizer high in nitrogen sprinkl ed over the leaves. A complete fer tilizer such as a 6-8-6 or 8-8-8 can b used, or sulphate of ammonia, or nitraate of soda will be satisfact ory. Along with the fertilizer, each layer of leaves may be covered with about an inch of garden soil. When the pile of leaves has been built up to the desired height, it is covered with a .thin layer of soil and allowed to stand for eight to 12 months. During this time it must be kept wet The result will be leafmold which is a valuable supplement to most garden soils. Leafmold is us ually very acid in reaction and un less you are usiqg it around acid loving plants, lime should be add ed. On large lawns raking is a ted ious chore. For those who can af ford it there is a machine which picks up te leaves, grinds them up the banner for having the largest number of parents at the meeting.
