J. E. Rufty. The Rev. Asmond Maxwell, pas tor of the First Methodist Church, Murphy, will deliver the commence ment address Thursday, May 20 at 8 p. m. in the school auditorium. The Rev. J. P. Hornbuckle will give the invocation and the Rev. Vitolds Gobins will pronounce the benediction on this occasion. The Aev. John C. Corbitt, pastor of Andrews First Baptist Church will deliver the baccalaureate ser mon Sunday. May 16, at 7:30 p. m. at the school. The Rev. John C. Neville pastor of the Andrews Presyterian Church will give the invocation and the Rev. Grover Kimberlin will read the scripture and pronounce the benediction. Some 32 pupils will receive their diplomas. Class honor students are Lillian West, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Loftin West, of Andrews, valedictorian: and co-salutatorians. | Hoyt Lunsford, son of Mr. and Mrs.' P. M. MARBLE EXERCISES Commencement exercises for the Marble Elementary School will be Friday, May 14, at 7:00 p. m. in the Marble School auditorium. Cobb Clinic To Open Soon, Mrs. Spencer Says The Cobb Clinic at Route 24 Murphy will be open by next month, Mrs. Nora Cobb Spencer said this week. Mra. Spencer said Dr. Irvin M. Weir of Oakdale, Calif., has writ ten that he expects to have his af fairs in order soon and can come here "to take over rural service in this area." ~ Weir is an ex-service doctor and has been serving in a State Hosp ital in California for some time, Mrs. Spencer said. His wife is a registered nurse and will assist her husbdnd at the clinic. Notice of the exact tune of open ing will be announced later. Padgett. 73. died at 2:45 p. ra. Wednesday in a Murphy hospital following a stroke which he suffered Monday afternoon. Had he lived until July 25, he would have been 74 years old. Mr. Padgett was Register of Deeds of Cherokee County for 18 years when he resigned five years ago because of falling health. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Ethel McTaggart Padgett, two sons B. L. Jr.. of Lothian, Md., and Paul William with the U. S. Navy locat ed in Trinidad; four daughters, Mrs. Lucy Wakefield of Washing ton, D. C., Mrs. Ruth Stiles and Mrs. Kate Hensley of Murphy, and Mrs. Sara Posey of Waynesville, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements under di- j rection of Ivie Funeral Home are | Incomplete. Ballots Available For Absentees Absentee ballots for voting in the Democratic Primary, May' 29, 'are available now, Pete Stalcup, chairman of the Cherokee County Board of Elections, said this week. Stalcup said absentees may vote provided one is 21 years of age, or will be by Nov. 2, 1954: One is a member of the U. S. military or naval service or Merchant Mar ines; one is the wife of a service man residing with her husband outside of the borne county; a dis charged disabled war veteran re ceiving treatment in a government hospital; or a civilian attached to and serving outside of* the IT. Ministers See Showing Of ''Martin Luther" Murphy, Andrews and Hayes ville ministers were guests at a preview showing of "Martin Luth er", a Lutheran Church-produced movie, here last week at the Dick ey Theatre. Dockery Baby Dies At Home Sharon Dpckery, three-month- J old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Har ley Dockery of Route 3, Murphy died at her home Saturday night May 8. Funeral services were held in Ebanezar Baptist Church Monday at 2 p. m., and burial was in the church cemetery. Tana. Townson Fundta! Soma was la Oa i I! Mayor Calls Crackdown On raffic Violations A tightening up of traffic con trols in Murphy will be launched sgain starting Monday, Mayor L. L. Mason said this week. According to the Mayor two hour parking will be enforced on the four main streets. Vehicles will be checked on the time limit and other violations, Mayor Mason as- { serted. Other regulations that will be enforced, the mayor said, are doub le parking in places other than de signated parking places, and park ing along yellow curbs. Silas Abernathy Dies In Atlanta Silas Abernathy, 63, of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Cherokee County died at <his home in Atlanta Friday, May 7. Funeral services were held Monday at 3.-30 p. m. and burial was in West Point Cemetery, Atlan ta. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Lena Collins Abernathy and four children. One brother, J. H. Aber nathy of Andrews; three sisters. Mrs. Ravie O'Dell, Murphy, Rt. 3 Mrs. Ora Reece, Bryson City; and Mrs. Tina Lovingood, Asheville. (Persons attending the funeral from Andrews were Mrs. J. H. Postmaster General Arthur Summerfield has announced the week beginning May 17 th as "Mail Box Improvement Week". This will be the sixteenth consecutive cam paign to tidy up the official mail receptacles. Postmaster Joe K. Ray is request lug the rural patrons in this area to repair and beautify their mail box equipment and approaches to help lend brightness to the scenic beau ty of the highways , roads and drives.
