Illegal Mail-Order
Eye Glasses
MORGANTO?An illegal meth
od of prescribing and ordering
glasses by mail has been reported
in North Carolina, and measures
are being taken by the State's vis-,
ion specialists to halt the process
Dr. P. N. DeVere, Morgan ton
optometrist and president of the
State Board of Examiners, said
today that an Illinois optical com
pany, advertising "cheap" glass
es. has flooded the state with lit
erature. telling Individuals how
to examine the eyes of others on
a house-to-house, commission bas
is
The kit contains instructions,
order blanks, a printed eye chart,
and an "eye tester." The "eye tes
ter" is a series of 14 lenses mount
ed in a strip of cardboard.
"It is foolish to assume," said
Dr. DeVere, "that glasses can be
fitted with a series of 14 lenses or
that eyes can be examined in a
matter of minutes." Dr. DeVere al
so pointed out that any vision prob
lem might indicate a condition of
bodily disease which would go un
detected without a thorough opto
metric examination.
He said that steps are being
taken to stop the Illinois firm
from using the mails to advertise
mail-order glasses and that any
one examining eyes in Dm state
ynder the plan will be subject to
prosecution for illegal examina
tion of the eyes.
Any person who have been ap
proved with offers of mail-order
glasses are requested to report
.the incident to Dr. DeVere In Kbr
ganCon.

To The Voting Public Of Cherokee County
Our son, Edward (Sid) Truett, has recently been sworn in aa
Deputy Sheriff of Clierokee County. This action was taken against
our will and the will of the fine Christian friends of Brother
Truett.
He is a good Christian gentlemen, a member and clerk of the
Andrews Second Baptist Church.
We are not against Edward being deputy sheriff, but we are
against the office that Is now in power. We cannot support them
this coming Saturday. Our vote and our Influence must go for Mr.
Hall for sheriff of Cherokee County and we earnestly beg the
Christian public to pray about this matter and go o the polls Sat
urday and cast your vote for the man that will clean up the sor
did mess in Cherokee Co.
We feel that Edward was sworn in as deputy sheriff for the
purpose of drawing supporters for the power now in office.
Again, may we say that we are one-hundred percent for Ed
ward Truett. He is a fine boy, a decent and upright citizen. He
is worthy of the job of deputy sheriff in this county. But we must
oppose the machine crowd that now is in power.
May we as the Christians and as the citizens of a wonderful
county go to the polls Saturday and cast our vote for a man that
will help us have a clean and law-abiding county. May God help
us everyone to do that.
