GOOD TELEPHONE SERVICE DEPENDS ON REASONABLE RATES The Western Carolina Telephone Company has applied for an increase in rates in Ijfurphy. , This increase would make Murphy rates the same as those now in effect in Bry son City, Sylva, Franklin, and other towns of similar size. The rates in Murphy were not changed in the last general increase granted to the' Western Carolina Telephone Com pany or the Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Com pany. Murphy was not included in this increase due to die timing of the transaction of the Murphy purchase and the increases granted to the Western Carolina Telephone Company and Southern Bell Telephone Company. There was a small increase made in Murphy rates in August, 1953: This did hot put Murphy on an equal basis with our other exchanges. Since .we acquired Murphy we have continually improv ed and expanded the telephone system and expect to con tinue our growth as the territory grows and believe that all subscribers should pay reasonably and equitably for their service. A comparison of Murphy's present and proposed rates and some of our other exchanges is shown in the following.
