Oeorfe W. Hall of Route S, Hnifkjr, receive* his warrant of pro motion to Marine Pfc. in May while serving with the Marine Detach ment aboard the heavy cruiser U88 Macon. His commanding offi cer, Marine Capt. Morris D. Cooke, makes the presentation. Before entering the service In July I*M, be was graduated from Murphy High School. Earl B. Moore Dies In Cramerton Earl B. Moore, formerly of Mur phy, Rt. 1, died at his home to Cramerton May 31. Mr. Moore was born and raised in the Peachtree community, but had been living in Cramerton for the past nine years. He Was 59 years old a member of Upper Peachtree Baptist Church. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Agnes Fish Moore of the home; three sons, Richard of the U. S. ?Army stationed in Calif.; Carl and Walter of Cramerton; and four daughters, Mrs. Paul Lee, Mrs. Sue Buchanan, Mrs. Bettle Moore and Mrs. Mary Sue Howell, all of Cramerton. Also his mother, Mrs. R. F. Moore of Murphy Rt. 1. Also surviving are three brothe* Morrison, Edd and Dee; four sis ters, VI via, Lula, Lizzie and Ada, all of Murphy, Rt. 1; one half sis ter, Mrs. Allie Riddle of San An tonio, Texas. Interment was in Gaston Memor ial Cemetery. Among The Sick Mrs. J. H. Phaup is reported to be improved and will be discharg ed from Petrie Hospital this week. Mrs. E. J. Darnell Is a patient in Petrie Hospital, having had sur gery there last Friday. Mrs. Phillips, 72 Dies At Warne i Mrs. Ivy Phillips. 72, died at 7:30 . p. m. Tuesday, May 31 in her home Route 1, Warne, after a !ong ill ness. . Funeral services were held at'i 1 1 10 a. m. Thursday i.i Ebenezer , Baptist Church, with the Rev. Henry Brown and the Rev. Chris ty Mrs. Paul M. Jordan and Miss Gladys Christy. J. R. Ledford Dies At Hiwassee, Ga. James Robert Ledford, 71, a re tired farmer died in a Hiawasaee, Ga. hospital, Friday, June 3. He was a native and lifelong resi dent of Clay County, a son of the late Man son and Vina Roberts Led ford, and was member of Ledford'a Chapel Methodist Church. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Effie Eller and Mrs. Ruby Ander son of Hayesvllle and Mrs. Beulah Jonce of Canton, Ohio; and 21 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 3 p. m. Saturday in Philadelphia Baptist Church, with the Rev. V. N. Allen officiating. Burial was in i Ledford Cemetery. Ivie Funeral Home was in charge. Mrs. Rogers, 95 - Dies After Illness Mrs. Sarah Rogers, 95, died at S p. m. Wednesday, June 1, In the home of a son, G. G. Rogers of Murphy following an illness of sev eral weeks. She was a native and lifelong res ident of Cherokee County, and had been a member of the Methodist Church for more than 75 years. Funeral services were held at J:30 p. m. Thursday in the Tomotla Methodist Church. Officiating ministers were the ftev. C. A Smith, the Rev, R. A. ie'zer, the Rev. Jack Palmer and lie Kev. Colvin Thompson. O., has been visiting her laughter, Mrs. Charles Sneed in Miami, Fla., for the past two .veeks. She is now visiting relatives in Murphy and came especially to attend the decoration at Rogers Chapel on June 5. Phone 2-132$ / ' , Pine Beetles Are Studied Here By Forestry Personnel Ed Merkel, entomologist (or the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station, spent Monday on the Tus quitee Ranger District training National Forest personnel in detect ion and control of pine 'beetles. I The principle insects are the Southern pine beetle and the ips engraver beetle, and secondary at- 1 lackers are the turpentine borer , and ambroeia beetle. Local forest ranger, W. E. How ell said "Since pine is our number one money tree in Cherokee Coun ' ty, we have much concern over a | few scattered Infected patches of trees." Mr. Howell said recent beetle out breaks near Marion and Brevard have almost reached epidemic stage. He said "we certainly want to prevent any epidemic here U at all possible " . Fading yellowish to red topped trees are evidence that the beetles are killing the trees, Mr. Howell said. He advised that infected trees should be cut and marked. He said all limbs two inches and over should be sprayed with benzene hexachloride to kill the insects brood. Mrs. Williams Has Woman's Society Meet Mrs. Roy Williams was hostess to the June meeting of the Woman's Society of Christian Ser vice of the Andrews Methodist Church at her home Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Cleve Almond gave the de votional message. Miss Jean Chris ty was in charge of the program on United Nations. She gave inti mate and personal experiences, having spent some time in New York on a recent trip. Mrs. Frank Swan gave a report of the sub-district meeting held at Oak Forest church. Mrs. Williams presided over the | business session. Andrews BWC Has Meet At Battles' The Business Woman's Circle of the First Baptist Church held their June meeting with Miss Daisy Battel at her home with Mrs. Ma bel Ray burn as co-hostess for a. covered dish supper. In observance of the Heck Jones state Mission program, Mrs. Edgar Wood presented a program on the work being done. Some are fiction, some children's books and some history, travel and general information. Some of the books belonged to the late Mr. and Mrs. George Hob litzell, and some to Mrs. Hoblitzell u>d her husband, the late Billy Hoblitzell. Friends of these people will en joy having the books in the locaj library, and the library expressed its sincere thanks to Mr*. Hoblit zell. Mrs. R. A. Dewar is chairman of the library ward. In the meantime I will be at the service of my successor to give to him Information in order that he may carry on the work without any delay. I wish to take this opportunity to say that I deeply appreciate the splendid cooperation of the citixens of Cherokee County who have made It possible since December to not only keep up the food record of tax collections but to better the mark. At the same time I wish to commend the list takers who made it pass ible to show a substantial increase in the valuation of taxable property. I have enjoyed the work and the contact with the citixens of the county. My personal wish is to carry on a line of work I had already arranged to do last fall when this present position was unexpect edly offered. At seventy, one does not have too much time re maining to do many of the things and go many of the places one wishes to go. In the work at the Court House .It has been a pleasure to watch the manner in which the various departmental are ded icated to their work and the welfare of Cherokee County. I have been proud of the manner in which the newly elected officials have learned their work. Claud Anderson and his efficient and hard working helpers in the Sheriff's department - K ell is Rad ford and the ability he has shown in the Clerk's office - Ed Graves and the manner in which the Registrar of Deeds office is being conducted - Virgil O'Deli who at great sacrifice to his personal business stayed on through the long session of the Legislature and very ably represented Cherokee County ? oar efficient solicitor of the County Court, O.
