Perhaps the corn ear worms are also looking for ward to that time ? and they usu ally get there first. However, they can be effectively controlled with very little trouble. For small gardens it is probahly sufficient and easiest to dust the silks of the corn with 5 per cent DDT dust. The dust should be ap plied directly to the silks when a bout three-fourths of the silks are -howing and again when a few of ; them begin to turn brown. The moth lags the eggs on the silks and when they hatch out. the small corn ear worm feeds there before . he eat* into the ear itself. For large plantings a power sprayer shouM be used and a DDT-mineral ail emulsion is recommanded by our entomologists. This spray has Ven found to be very effective for he control of the ear worm. With the advent of hot. dry eather we may expect to have rouhle with red mites, commonly illed "red spiders." These very -nail insects attack the undersides ' the leaves of many flowers. tables and shrubs. sucking' e plant juices and often killing '-.e plants. If the leaves of toma es. beans, dahlias or other gar >n plants turn a brownish yellow ??lor they should be closely ex mined for red mites. Rer mites re very difficult to control. Mala thion has been found to be effec tive but is toxic to human beings and shouud be used with care and ' strictly according to manufactur- ' ers' directions. And while we are on the subject ! of insect control let us not forget I the ever-present Mexican bean beetle. Don't let the beetles serious ly damage the bean plants before you do something about it. As soon you see some of the beetles ? they are large brown or yellow lady bird beetles with sixteen spots on their wing covers ? or as soon as you notice that some of the bean leaves bare been eaten so that they re semble a piece of lace, it is time to get busy. The best control in the home garden is a 19c rotenone. Since the beetle leeris 011 the under sides of the bean leaves the dust must be applied to the undersides of the leaves to be effective. Ro tenone is not toxic to humans and therefore may be used without danger even after the bean pods have formed. Oavidson-Goforf h Dinner Told Mr and Mrs Sam L.
