Less Than Half Of Lumber
For N. C. Furniture Industry
Comes From This State
htm than one- half the source of
lumbar for the furniture Industry of
North Carolina is derived from the
forests of this state.
Tills disturbing figure was recent
ly discovered in the results of a
survey conducted by the Furniture,
Plywood, and Veneer Council of the
Nerth Carolina Forestry Associa
tion in cooperation with the South
ern Furniture Manufacturers Asso
ciation and the Southeastern Forest
Experiment Station of the United
States Forest Service.
According to a booklet summariz]
ing this survey ,the furniture plants |
of North Carolina use approxi
mately 350 million board feet of do
mestic lumber each year. Some 44
percent of this lumber comes from
North Carolina, another 21 percent
from the adjoining states of South
Carolina and Tennessee, and 10
percent from Gerogia. The other
fourth comes from the deep South
and the central states, with only
very small amounts coming from
other parts of the country.
Yellow-poplar exceeds all other
species, making up SS percent of
the domestic lumber used. The
gums account for 20 percent, the
oaks 11 percent, yellow pine 6 per
cent, with no other species ac
counting for more than 3 percent of
the volume.
Surprisingly .only 13 million feet
or S.S percent of mil lumber uaed Is
of foreign origin. Imported lumber
is approximately 98 percent Hon
duras mahogany.
The North Carolina furniture in
?dustry is dependent on North Caro
lina hardwoods if high freight rates
are to be avoided. The forest land
owner in North Carolina Is depen
dent on the furniture industry for
his major market for hardwood
forest products. The sawmills and
concentration yards of North Car
olina are dependent on the land
owner to supply the timber, and
the furniture industry to purchase
the lumber.
The economic importance of the
hardwood timber resource to the
state is easily recognized when a
value Is applied to the lumber used. ,
Estimates indicate that over 42 mil
lion dollars were paid out for lum-|
ber alone, not considering wages
paid in processing lumber into fur
niture and various other sources of
revenue resulting. This amounts to
approximately J10.50 per capita in
the state.
Little thought has been given to
the importance of hardwoods to
North Carolina's economy in the
past.
However, with the establishment

GARDEN TIME
BY BOBEKT SCHM1TT
With the coming of (all weather,
we must prepare to harveat and
care tor our aweet potato crop.
The aweet potato, being a tropical
plant, will continue to grow until
froat kills the vtnea. However,
they may be dug aa aoon aa the
roots have reached a desirable
size. It is safer to dig them before
frost because If the stems are ex
posed they may be damaged by
the cold and the roots will not keep
well in storage.
Sweet potatoes should be dug
carefully so as not to bruise or cut
them unnecessarily. A bad bruise
will cause a hard spot when the
potato is cured or may allow dis
ease to enter the root. It is best to
grade in the field, carefully pack
ing the marketable or useable po
tatoes in bushel tub baskets or slot
I' ted crates in which they will be
stored. The culls should be used at
once or disposed of. It is not advis
able to store the culls with the
I*""
| For the gardener who grows
only a few for his own use, a
warm basement or vacant room
may provide suitable storage. For
the first 10 to 15 days a curing tem
perature of about 85 degrees
should be maintained. After that a
temperature of 55 to <0 degrees Is
best. For the gardener who also
wishes to sell a few bushels of po
tatoes, we recommend that he
build a small storage house such
as one designed by the depart
ments of horticulture and agricul
tural engineering, which will
hold 64 bushel baskets of potatoes.
It is heated by electricity and con
trolled by a thermostat so that
there is little attention needed in
its operation. Plans may be ob
tained from the Agricultural Ex
tension Service, N. C. State Col
lege, Raleigh, N. C.
Once the potatoes are placed in
storage they should not be hand
led or disturbed until ready to re
move them for use or for market.
Any handling of the potatoes in
storage will often cause many of
hem to rot. If stored in baskets or
:rates any desired number of bask
its may be removed at any time
without disturbing the others. It
vill be necessary to regrade all
>otatoes taken from the storage
lor market.
