People Are Greatest Potential
Short Course Shows ;90 Attend
"The greatest potential ol ths
Southern Highlands lies In its
people." according to the 90 vol
unteer and professional commun
ity workers who attended the an
nual shortcourse in community I
living at the Campbell Folk School
last week.
More than 70 persona from
Cherokee, Graham and Clay ??oil
Lies took part in the disc?*ons.
A'ith 12 others from Georgia, Ten
nessee and other parte of K?rth
Carolina.
The people of this area a?o the
key to unlocking all other future
potentials ? economic, spi?itual
and social, the group concluded.
Good health and extra fcic?me
were suggested as important in
helping people to live the beot
kind d community life the^ <r?at
to live.
With increased energy t? work
and Increased income to p^r the
bills, people will want to tale
part in the larger community res
ponsibilities, the group decidied.
While nobody suggested that any
particular organization or agency
should cea.<e existing, some felt
there were too many meeting in
the communities, trying to accom
plish the same good works. Al
though there is plenty of work for
all. a little more cooperative ef
fort would show more permanent
ftivj widespread results, it was eon
eluded
It was pointed out that most or
ganizations have committees for
study and action on health, welfare
community improvement, educat
ing, agriculture, recreation, fam
ily relations. and others ? plus
raising money to operate these
prog-ra*1?
The discussion group for indus
try and agriculture pointed to the
fact? that present use of resources
d*as not come anywhere near the
present potential. This group list
ed land, water, people, roads,
I forest s, te< hnologi.al assistance,
anil finarn ial assistance as being
more available than present use
would indicate.
As an example of unused op
| portunity to increase local pot
ential. there were mentioned six
scholarships f i >r young men to
study agriculture at State Coll
ege, Raleigh. These are offered an
ually by the Citizens Bank and
Trust Co. to young men of Clay,
Cherokee and Graham Counties
t in iu iif,> i tiAUibnutu
) Church representatives In the
discussions accepted the challenge
more virgorously to promote un
derstanding and good will, through
ministerial associations. It was
considered that the church holds
the unique position of providing
focus and meaning to all commun
ity functions, through dedicated in
dividuals who take part in those
functions.
