ANDKBWS Dr. and Mrs. Gerald Almond, returned Monday from Opelika, Ala., where they attended the fun eaal of Mm. Almond's uncle who passed away Friday night Miss Anna Marie Butler, student nurse at Mission Memorial Hospi tal in Asheville spent the week end here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon L.. Butler. The Rev. John Vimont pastor of the Andrews Free Methodist church has returned after a three weeks stay in Haiti, where he at tended an Evangelistic crusade and collected material for his thesis. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Komar of Little Silver, N. J. and New York City were guests of Mrs. Komar's aunt, Mrs. Vina Kilpatrick and Miss Elizabeth Kilpatrick Sunday. Mrs. Komar is the former Miss Hermie Fox of Bryson City and is connected with the Belk's Depart ment Store's New York office. They were accompanied here by Mrs. Komar's mother, Mrs. D. E. Fox of Bryson City. Mr. and Mrs. James Baer have returned after a week's stay in Reading, Pa Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Davis had as their guests over the week end their sons, Dr. Jack Davis, Mrs. Davis and their son, Karl of Way nesville, and Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Davis and their children, Glenn and Ellen of Franklin. Sr., and Mr. and Mrs. J. P. . Calhoun and has entered Andrews school. Mr. and Mrs. Battle Jr. are spending two years In Australia where Mr. Battle is connected with a construction company. Mr. and Mrs. EdgarWood spent the week end in Asheville as guests of Mr. and lbs. W. R. Palmer. , Benefit Party Be At Folk School Fri. Hie annual benefit March of! Dime* party at the John C. Camp bell Folk School -will be held to morrow (Friday, Feb. 17) at 8 p. m. Everyone la Invited to attend. The admission charge is SO cents for adults and 2S cents for child ren under 13. Proceeds from the party will be divided between the polio funds of Cherokee and Clay counties. Folk dancing is planned for all ages and other special entertain ment will be offered. Mrs. Wayne Holland and a group of teen-agers are in charge of re freshments which will be served at no extra charge. Mrs. Murrlal Martin and Mrs. Alice Tipton are In charge of badges, which each person attending will receive. The decorations committee is made up of Jerry Hall, Charles Arrant, Gretchen Conzelman and Mrs. Georg Bidstrup. Hedy West will be present and will play for some of the dances. Special Singers Be Guests At Singing Sunday The first meeting of the Chero kee County Third Sunday Singing in iU new quarters will be held Sunday, Feb. 19, in the Murphy School auditorium at 2 p. m. Due to the number of visiting special singers who are expected to attend, much of the time will be given to them, it was announced. Special singers include the Smiling Airs of Blue Ridge, Ga.; the Dixieland Quartet of Fannin and Union counties, Ga. ; the Jones Family of McCaysville, Ga.; and the Hill Duet, composed of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hill of Andrews. All singers and the public are Invited to attend. There will be no admission charge. Crippled Children's Drive Is Organized An organizational meeting for< the annual Easter Seal Sale and J drive for crippled children and a* dults was held Thursday, Feb. 0 at the Citizens Bank and Trust Co. in Andrews. Davidson Named Athletic Supervisor Harold "Bull' Davidson, former ly of Murphy, has accepted a posi tion as athletic supervisor for the city of Atlanta, Ga. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Davidson of Murphy and is married to the former Barbara Reid of Murphy and Atlanta. The Davidsons are making their home at 322 Aviation Rd. Mr. and Mrs. Davidson have re cently returned from Heidelberg, Germany where Mr. Davidson was stationed with the U. S. Army. LODGE TO CHURCH Members of Cherokee Lodge, 146, AF and AM, and members erf Mur phy Chapter No. 10, Order of the Eastern Star have been invited to attend services at the Presbyterian Church next Sunday at 7:30 p. m. in a body. i Revival Scheduled By Bishop Henry The Right Rev. Matthew George Henry, Episcopal, bishop of West I ern North Carolina, will conduct a preaching mission, or revival, at the Church of the Messiah during i the week of February 27 through ' March 2. Services will be at 7:30 p. m. each day. Fere bee To Speak To Konnaheeta Club P. B. Ferebee will be speaker at the February meeting of the Kon naheeta club to be held Thursday (tonight) Feb. 16 in the Andrews School cafeteria beginning at 6:30 p. m. The Conservation department will be in charge of the program. Religions Movie Be Shown Here Hollywood's first full-scale por trayal of Christ in 27 years will be shown at the Dickey Theatre here Sunday through Tuesday next week. , The movie, " Day of Triumph", stars Robert Wilson as Christ and Lee J. Cobb as Zadok, a fictional character leader of the Zealot un derground seeking overthrow of the Roman rule in Judea. Also in the movie are James Griffith as Judas Iscariot and Joanne Dru as Mary Magdalene. The film is in color and will be shown on wide screen. Wrestlers To Give 2nd Performance The Murphy Lions Club will sponsor a return professional wrestling match at the Murphy Gym Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p. m. The second match was schedul ed after popularity of the first ap pearance of the wrestlers in Jan uary. Included in the mat attractions will be "Mike" the 600 pound brown Siberian wrestling bear, tussling with a different opponent ; The feature match will be the fighting of the 240' pound Masked Secret who never removes his mask, whether winner or loser, and his id en tity is unknown even among wrestling circles. The Masked Secret will be matched with Johnny Hart, the Texas Heavyweight champion, who said he will "forcibly remove the secret's mask and reveal his identity. In the girls ^wrestling match Miss Anna Lee, the Kentucky Wild Cat" and former beauty con test winner will be pitted against Blonde Pearl Nelson, "the infam ous bad girl of the squared circle." The climax will be the mixed tag team match. Advance tickets may be pur chased from members of the lions Club. Schedule 0^_ ^j-1 Andrews PoKr Drive Is Told Jake Buchanan, chairman of the Polio Drive in Andrews, announc ed the final schedule of dates of benefits for the remainder of the drive: Th Andrews Cafe will observe "Coffee Day" tomorrow, Friday Feb. 17 also the Mother's March of Dimes will get under way with all workers to report to the Town Hall promptly at 7 p. m. tomorrow night (Friday), with Mrs. Charles Higdon, chairman in charge. AU donors are urged to have their porch lights on. , The Lions Club will be in charge of the dime board Friday, and Sat urday, Feb. 17 and 18 and the American Legion will operate the Board on February 24 and 25. Last Friday and Saturday the Rotary club was in charge. The Andrews Cafe will observe "Coffee Day" Friday (tomorrow) through Saturday, 17-18.. Schedule of "Wash Days" are: Texaco Service Station, Tuesday February 21; Gulf, Wednesday, 22; and Sinclair, Thursday 23, with proceeds for cars washed on these scheduled days to be used for polio fund. Business houses will be solicited Saturday, Feb. 18. GOCSets Up Schedule; 8 More Volunteers Needed A seven day a week, 24 hours a day schedule was set up Monday night for the Ground Observers Corps Dost In Murphy. At least eight more volunteers are needed, however, before the schedule will be complete. The hours still unfilled at the post are: Sundays, midnight-2 a. m. and 2-4 a. m. Mondays 2-4 a. m. ; Wednesdays, 8-10 a. m.; Thursday 8-10 a. m. and Fridays 2-4, 4-6 and 8-10 a. m. Anyone who would be willing to take one of these waatches is ask ed to contact H. Bueck, W. C. Mes ser or Ben Ragsdale. Legion To Have' Dutch Dinner Fri. The local American Legion Post 96 will hold a dutch dinner tomor row, Friday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 p. m. at Duke's Lodge. Officers will be elected and plans will be made to "put the Legion back on its feet in Chero kee County", Adjutant John S. Smith announced. All veterans, even those who are not members of the Legion at pres ent are invited to attend. **-;rphy Boys Meet Sylva On Opening Day Tourney Play World Day Of Prayer Is Set An Interdenominational World Day of Prayer will be held Friday afternoon at 3:15 at the Andrews Methodist Church In observance of the 70th International Day of Pray er, sponsored by the United Church Women. The day's theme through out the world will be "One Flock, One Shepherd". Purpose of the day of prayer is to unite, protestant, evangelical and orthodox Christian denomina tion in a bond of prayer and to make offerings for Christian mis mions. Red Cross Course Held Last Week A Home Service Training Course with Social and Welfare Aid was held here last Thurs day and Friday with Hiss Mar garet Patterson, regional director and specialist in home service, social and welfare aid for the American Red Cross, and Miss Ruth Lockman, field consultant for the Western North Carolina District of the Red Cross Two five hour meetings were held from 9:30 a. m. to 3:30 p. m. in the Presbyterian Church on Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Johnsie Nunn spoke on Thursday on how the department of Public Welfare and the Red Cross lan work together and help each other. On Friday, Mrs. R. C. Fuller spoke on Home Nursing and how helpful the course is to the com- > munity. The meetings were for Andreyvs, Robbinsville, Hayes ville and Mur phy. The "Melody Aires", radio and TV quartet from Knoxville, Tenn., will present a gospel song program at the Murphy School auditorium Friday, Feb. 24, at 8 p. m. Proceeds from the program will go to the Cherokee County March of Dimes. The young men in the quartet have worked for a number of years with the Statesmen Quartet of At lanta, Ga. and the Chuck Wagon Gang of Fort Worth, Texas. The singers are presenting the program here at a reduced rate to benefit the polio drive. Advance tickets are now on sale In most parts of the county at the Western Auto, and Cherokee Pon tiac in Murphy. Tickets are $1 for adults and 50 cents for chil dren. Other singing on the program will feature local talent. Fred HOI will be master of ceremonies. The program will be sponsored by vlcic clubs of Murphy. Baptist Pastors Form Conference The Rev. J. L. Allen, pastor o Hanging Dog Baptist Church, Monday was elected president of the new organization of Baptist pastors in this area. The organizational meeting was held Monday, Feb. 13, at the First Baptist Church here. ' Othr officers are the Rev. John Grant, pastor of Truett Memorial Church, Hayesville, vice president; and the Rev. Marvin Hampton, pastor of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, secretary and treasurer. The next meeting of the Baptist pastors conference will be held March 5 at 10 a. m. at the First Baptist Church, Murphy. All Baptist ministers in the area are invited to join the conference. Shields Baby ? Dies In Atlanta John Brain Shields, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Shields of Atlanta, Ga., formerly of Mur phy, died Saturday, Feb. 4. . Funeral services were held Feb ruary 7 in the home and interment took place in Hillcrest Cemetei-y, Atlanta. Surviving are the parents, Bar bara and James Shields, one bro ther, Brandon Shields; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ann Rueben saal of Perrysburg, O.; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Shields of Murphy and a number ?f aunts and uncles. | COLBERT RETURNS Donald P. Colbert, seaman, USN, on of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Col bert of Rt. 3, Murphy, returned to I Dong Beach, Calif., February 5 aboard the light cruiser USS Man chester which completed a six month cruise in the Far East. The Murphy boys basketball team, western division champs, yesterday met Sylva in the High lands gym at S :30 p. m. in their first game of the Smoky Mountain Conference. The Cherokee Baaves, champ ions of the eastern division, drew a bye in the first series of play. The Andrews boys played Frank lin at 5 p. m. Meanwhile the girls tournament will get under way today In the Robblnsville gym. Andrews girls, division champs, drew a bye for the first day. The Swain High girls are eastern division champs. The Murphy girls. In fourth place in their division, will play their first tournament game to day (Thursday) at 2 p. m. All games in the boys tourna ment will be played in Highlands and the girls' contests will be In Robbinsville. The tournament will be concluded next week end. Correction of Error In Ad The Cherokee Scout last week ran a classified ad in which it was erroneously stated that C. E. Pal mer is not a licensed electrician to do work in the state of North Car olina. Actually, Mr. Palmer does hold such a license and the Scout deep ly regrets the error. A correction of the error Is also on the classified page of this week's issue. Peachtree PT A meet* Tuesday The past presidents of the Peach tree PTA will be honored at a Founders Day PTA Program Tuesday at 7:30 p. m. at the school. Mrs. Bill B&rnett is president of the PTA at present. t Andrews Girls, Murphy Boys Division Champs Murphy Plays 3 Games Last Week BY IDA BRUMBY The Murphy Bulldogs finished their regular season Saturday night in a nt>n- conference tilt with West Fannin, Ga. The Murphy girls romped over the Georgia team 70-41 and the Murphy boys lost 69-63. In conference play last week the Bulldogs Tuesday night lost the girls game to Andrews 58-40; and won the boys game 68-50. In another conference contest Friday the Murphy boys dropped their first conference game to Robbinsville 57-50, while the much improved Robbinsville lassies took the Murphy girls in a close 46-42 victory. The Murphy boys entered the tournament last night as division champs and the Murphy girls were in the fourth place. High scoreers last meek were: ANDREWS GAME Girls, Shirley Stiles, 15; boys. The undefeated Andrews girls sewed up the championship of the Western Division of the Smoky Mountain Conference with a cor vincinj? 72-59 win over the highly touted Hayesville lassies. The Wildcat boys took the' sec ond game by a close 44-45 score. Carolyn West with 28, Wilms Crisp with 24. Gail Anderson w)th 20, and {Catherine Sursavage with two provided the scoring punch for the Andrews girls. Carolyn Deaton, LylA Ferguson, Pat Kil patrick, and Mattle Angel turned in a top defensive performance. Forwards who played for Hay esville were Us Zlmerman who scored -35 points, Betty Lou Wat son with 14, Reece with six, and Juanita Waldrop with four.
