'?*' Planning Commission To Elect Chairman Murphy's planning and develop- 1 ment commission will meet Moo-j day, March 19 at 8 p. m. to organ ise and elect a chairman. The commission was appointed by Town Council in January and is made up of Sam Harding, five year term; S. S. Williams, four years; Herman Edwards, three years; Merle Davis, two years and Bill Costello, one year. Red Cross Drive Continues In County The Red Cross drive began here< Monday, March 12, with Mrs. Cloe Moore in charge. Mm Moore said "we hope that you will dig down into your pock ets and give generously to help us to help those who cannot help themselves during hurrfcanes, floods and other disasters." Mrs. Moore pointed out that the local chapter must have money to continue sponsoring the blood pro gram and t keep the charter of the American Red Cross in Cherokee County. Mrs. Moore further said "Also give a pint of blood to help a rela tive, a friend or serviceman and 1 his family. The money and blood you give may help to save a life and we are counting on you." She concluded, "Wear your lapel pin and be proud to be a member of the American Red Cross." Boy Scouts Reorganized In Andrews ?ftie Rev. John C. Corbitt, pas tor of the First Baptist church was elected Scout Master of the Andrews Troop at a re-organiza tional meeting held Monday even ing (March 12) in the town hall. Assistants to Mr. Corbitt are Jake Abernathy and Jake Buchan an, along with the Boy Scout troop committee from the Andrews Rotary club wh'ch sponsors the troop. The meeting was called to order by Wayne Battle, chairman of the Boy Scout committee of the Rotary club, who outlined briefly the pur pose of the organization, and Intro duced S. J. Gernert, district com missioner of the Daniel Boone Council, of the Nantahala Dis trWt. Mr. Gernert gave a talk on scout ing and later at the close of the meeting led in songs and the friendship circle. Mr. Corbitt gave a talk on the meanng of the 10 points of scout ing. Te meeting was largely attended by parents and interested persons. There were 20 Boy Scouts present. Other members of the Rotary committee are: the Rev. Edwin Carter, secretary; Dr. Gerald Al mond, treasurer; Luke Ellis, ad vertising; Olen Stratton, property; James Baer, Outdoors; Joe Sur savage, publicity and Blaine Blev ins, transportation. Lines Extended , To Available Lots | Town Council Monday night an nounced that water and sewer lines have been extended to serve about 11 available building lots in Murphy. Some 450 feet of sewer and 650 feet of water line have been ex tended on Mauney St. in East Mur phy to sterve the six or seven avail able building lots. In the vicinity of the Virgil O' bell and Francis Bourne, Jr. pro perty about 450 feet of water and sewer line^have been laid to serve the new duplex apartments con structed by Jim Gibbs and to serve the four or five available building lots in that area, C. Ki wanis Clubs Set Benefit Basketball The Kiwanias Clubs of Murphy and Blairsville will play a Benefit Basketball game Friday, at 7 :30 p. m. at the Blairsville Gym, Girl Scoots Elect Officers At the Girl Scout meeting Thurs day, March 8. 1 Id* Arrant was elected president Other new officers are Dorothy Mull, secreatry, Charlene Parker, treasurer, and Beverly Sanders, reporter. They also discussed new projects, new proficiency badges and other activities. March 13 started Girl Scout week. The Girl Scouts have a dis play of books of interest to the girls in the library. They will end their activities, -by having a cook out Friday after school. Chlekei Supper Be At White Church A chicken supper will be held to horrow (Friday. March 16) at White Church School at 7:30 p. m. Everyone is invited to attend and prices are $1 for adults, 75 cents for teen agers and 50 cents for children. The meal will include chicken and all the trimmings. Miss Palmer Spends Weekend At Home Miss Edna Ann Palmer, student nurse at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Ga. spent the) week end at home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom. Palmer. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1955 and was awarded the Dr. Wells Nursing scholarship. Long-Range Agricul ture Program Committees Set Up At the Cherokee County Agricul ture workers council meeting Sat urday at the courthouse commit tees were set up for the county's long range agricultural program. The committees on the program will investigate the strength of the county in each division and will report on the current findings and will set up goals to work toward In the next 10 years. MURPHY DRIVE Mrs. Roy Fuller is Chairman of } the drive in Murphy. She will be assisted by Mrs. Bill Waggoner, Mrc. Cloe Moore, Mrs. Louise Wil liams and Arvel Wood. Other workers will be added to the list, Mrs. Fuller said. She said the drive in Murphy will be car ried out through Bale of the seals through the mail and personnel contacts. 'Talent Show Be Tomorrow In Andrews Plans are going forward for the annual Talent show, sponsored by the Konnaheeta club to be held Fri day evening, March 16, in the Andrews School auditorium at 7 :30. Proceeds are for community build ing fund. A large number of contestants are expected to enter and a va riety of entertainment has been ar-. ranged. Admission Is 50c and 25c. Conference v Hicks Home Is Destroyed By Fire The new asbestos shingled home of Lewis Hicks about thrte miles from Murphy on the Andrews Road early Tuesday morning was com pletely destroyed by fire. The Murphy Ft re Department rushed to the home when the call was turned in at 2 a. m. and foui.d the house already engulfed in flames and the roof ca^ed in, C. E. Johnson, Town of Murphy clerk said. No one was Injured in the Are, Mr. Johnson Hid, but except for one piece of furniture ? a sofa ? the house and furnishings were a total loss.
