Mason begins his third consecutive term as may or of Murphy this week after de feating Republican W. D. Town son in Tuesday's municipal elec tion. The Democrats also took all six town council posts with Cloe Moore, John Jordan, W. A. Single ton, Francis Bourne, Jr., all In cumbents, and Ed H. Brumby and Alvin Buchanan elected aldermen. Some 999 votes were cast in the election and the new town officials were elected to two year terms. Some 1,125 persons were register ed on the town books, with 16 be ing lost by challenges Saturday, | leaving 1,109 eligible voters. Unofficial counting of the votes ended at 10:10 p. m. Tuesday with the following unofficial figures an nounced : ?. Democrats: L. I*. Maqon, 596; Cloe Moore, 621; John Jordan, 620; H. Brumby, 619; W. A. Single ton, 616; Alvin Buchanan, 616; Prancia C. Bourne, Jr. 688. Republicans : W. D. Townson, 176; H. E. Dickey, 40?; J. W. (Jim) Franklin, 384; Don Ramsey, 370; Hayes Dockery, 367; Roy V. Lov ingood, 360 ;and Doyle C. (Bud dy) Burch, 364. The new terms will begin Imme diately with the mayor to be sworn in either by the clerk of court or a judge and the councilmen to be sworn in by the mayor. Official totals from the election ballots are expected to be com plete around noon today (Thurs day). Judd Stiles Heads Nnr Fam Bureau Judd Stiles was elected presi dent of the Cherokee County Farm Bureau at the reorganization of the bureau Friday night here. Carl Yates, field man from the N. C. Farm Bureau, assisted in the reorganization. Other officers tire Ed Wood, vice president; Mrs. Veiiin Jones, secretary-treasurer ; Mrs. Kate Shields, . chairman of the woman's organization; and Fred Dockery, director replacing W. P. Walker. Murphy Appliance Grand Opening Set The grand opening of Murphy Appliance Center, a new retail business in Murphy, will be held tomorrow and Saturday (May 11 11), Bill Costello and Arvel Woods, owners, announced this week. The new store, which is locat ed In the DeWey Garrett building on Willow Street handles General Electric Appliances and furniture, and opened for business first on Monday of this week. During grand opening ceremon ies a $330 GE automatic washing machine will be given away. Re freshments will be served the children and ladies will receive souvenirs. Mr. Woods is former owner of Woods Pure Oil Station and later was in partnership at the station with Gordon Wilson. He has been manager of Duke's Lodge, has owned a grocery store at Murphy, Rt. 3 and has been a salesman for Electrolux Corp. He is a na tive and lifelong resident of Cher okee County and was educated in Cherokee County schools. Mr. Costello has been living in Murphy for the past four years where he owned and edited the Cherokee Scout until the first of March. He came here from South Carolina. A graduate of Clemson College, he formerly was employ ed by the Greenville News-Pied mont Company. He is a veteran of World War II having served in the Air Corps. Both men ? are member* of the Murphy Lions Club. The appointment of a dog war den by the county commissioners is a step forward in prevention of one of the most terrible diseases to which man is subject, Dr Robert R. King County Health doctor said this week. . "Rabies can be controlled, the doctor said, but only by the work ing together, of all citizens. DO G WARDEN Allen McDonald, the newly ap pointed dog warden, has reported a favorable response on the part of the citisens generally to his work; and the vaccination at docs, which Is going on in Cherokee County at present, shows that the citisens are back of the program, the vmrdan asserted. . Revival Starts Tomorrow At Baptist Church Eleven visiting laymen from, ftendersonville, headed by Donald \dcox, will conduct a week end series of revival services at the Murphy First Baptist Church, be ginning Friday, May 11. Services will be held at 7:30 p. m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The laymen will conduct all the services and will also visit homes of prospects. Ht. Pleasant Gets New Chnreh Building Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church has replaced its almost 100 year old structure with a new building which will be dedicated some time this summer. The congregation this week ex pressed appreciation to all per sons who helped in the building of their new church and everyone is invited to attend the regular ser vices at the church each first and third Sunday. The pastor is the Rev. Wade Collins and C. S. Ware is clerk. The church is located 15 miles west of Murphy. Duncan Elected Lions Club President J. H. Duncan was elected presi dent of the Murphy Lions Club Tuesday night succeeding Merle Boy Scout Court Held In Hayesville Wendell Whitley received the life award and Bobby Weaver receiv ed the star award at the Boy Scout Court of Honor last week at the First Methodist Church, Hayes ville. Both boys are in Murphy Troop Two, and the awards were presented by John Jordan, Scout master of Troop 12, Murphy. Tenderfoot awards, presented by by Boy Scout executive for Nanta hala District, Tom Speed, went to: Larry Burrell, George Ber rong, Johnny Berrong, Donald W. Bradshaw, Bobby Dean Burch, Wiley McGlamery, Herman Cable Edwin Garrison, Thomas Penland, Jimmy Walker and Buford Gar rett all of Troop 7, Hayesville. Also receiving tenderfoot a wards were Alford Parker, Troop 11, Hayesville; and Charles Bar rett, Jr., Troop 12, Murphy Ben M. Ragsdale, assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 12, Murphy presented second class awards to: Billy Ray O'Dell and Dickey Davis, Troop 2, Murphy Douglas Dickenson, Morris Lemons and James Lemons, Troop 7, Hayes ville; and Jimmy Franklin, Troop 11, Hayesville. Veach-JIay-WilsM Gets Timber Sale The last two of six storm damage timber sales' on the National For est were sold last week to Veach May-Wilson, Inc., Ranger W. E. Howell said today. The other four sales were pur chased by Timber Products Co., L. M. Shields Lumber Co., Bayless Morrow and Commonwealth Lum ber Co., the Ranger said. ? Mr. Howell said all the timber was blown down on Shuler Creek tn the western part of Cherokee County. The tornadic winds hit on the night of March 26. The total volume blown down was 960,000 board feet of sawtim ber and 600 cords of pulpwood. The total price paid for the timber by the five companies was $33, T60.
