(Scout Photo) Murphy telephone subscribers will begin using the new dials on their telephones Sunday after the cutover to the dial system at mid night Saturday, June 30. The change over represents over 10 months work and some <275,000 for the new building and equipment. The local office of Western Carolina Telephone Com pany will move to its new build ing on the corner of Church and Central Streets at the same time the dial system is put Into effect. The company has been located over Parker's Drug Store since 1920 when it moved from the Townson Building on the comer of Valley River Ave. and Tennes see St. The company was owned by Southern Bell until the sale to Western Carolina about four years ago. Over 1,100 telephones will be on the dial system from the beginn ing of the operation. L. J. Phillips, local manager, pointed out that the new telephone equipment is designed for easy expansion to keep up with Murphy's growth for time to come. He said that some 4,594 wires go Into the new building as com pared to 2,200 wires on the prev- 1 ious system. New telephone directories are in the mail and all subscribers should have a directory by time of the cutover. All telephone num bers have been changed ? each beginning with VE, the first two letter^ in Vernon, the Murphy of fice nWne. By next fall the Murphy ex change will enter the national toll dialing net work on long distance calls. The new equipment feill rank Murphy telephone service with the most up to date in the country. The modern split-level brick building which houses the new tel ephone system was built by H. M. Rice of Weaverville. Architects were Higgins and Fere bee of Charlotte. The building includes commercial offices, manager's of fice, employees lounge with rest rooms and kitchen facilities, GE Weathertrons for air condition ing and heating the building, a room housing the cables as they come in from the street and an emergency generator in case of power failure. The new dial sys tem equipment (largely by Strom >erg-Carlaon) Is located on the second level of the new building General plant manager and en gineer R. E. McKelvey and Divi sion manager F. H. Dean, both of Franklin, in addition to a number of other men from out of town, along with local employees have spent a great deal of time work ing on the installation of the new system. The local office has 27 employe es who include: Phillips, district manager; Ray L. Kohoutek, chief Installer; George Worley, switch man; Ralph Davis, Robert Hamp ton and Jack Moore, installer-re pairmen. Also Billie Akin, commercial clerk; Geneva Haygood, chief op erator; Joyce Allen, evening chief operator; Madge Ferguson, service assistant. Operators are Claudena Byers, Joan Coffey, Eulala Cook, Ann Dockery, Mona Lee Floyd, Helen Hawkins, Nettie McDonald, Inez Moore, Mildred' Murphy, Mae Belle Peek, Wilma Seabolt, Syl vania Stiles, Mary Ann Thompson, Betty Truett, Beatrice Zimmer man, Dorothy Hensley; and Benn Mann, maintenance. Pearson, teach er in Texana School, is one of nine North Carolina teachers who lyill study on General Electric Corp. scholarships this summer. Mrs. Pearson will study at Union College .Schenectady, N. Y. GE offered 250 scholarships for summer study, with nine going to forth Carolina teachers of whom three are from Western N. C. Mrs. Pearson, whose husband also teaches at Texana School, is a graduate with a bachelor of science degree from Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte. She holds an "A" teaching certificate for high school science. Murphy FFA Chapter Represented At Meet Murphy School's Vocational Agriculture Department la re presented at the State Future Farmers of American Convention in Raleigh this week by Gene Denning and Glenn Patton, Agri culture Teachers, accompanied by ?Leonard Foster , Paarl Johnson, and Clark Anderson who left Tues day morning to attend. The three students are winners of the Nantahala Federation and District Five Dairy Judging Con tests and will participate in the State Contest while attending the Convention. The meeting will con tinue through Friday. While there the group will stay at N. C. State College's dormi tories and will visit college de partments, the college farm and experiment station. 4-H'ers Should Tarn In Records The Cherokee County 4-H king and queen of health will be select ed next week it was announced today. Mrs. Miriam Miller, home agent, and James Adorns, assistant coun ty agent, asked all 4-H'ers to turn in their health record books by June 29 or 80. The king and queen will be se lected on the basis of the best re cords kept and the most improve ments made by the individual, in the family and community. The king and queen will reign over the festivities and square dances which 4-H'ers are plann ning for Andrews on July 19 and Murphy on July 21. They will go to Raleigh for 4-H Club Week on July 23 where the state winner will be selected. Andrews July 4th Celebration Have Par ade, Beauties, F i r e w o r k s| Plans were completed tor the annual Fourth of July celebra tion at a meeting of all commit tees held Monday evening at the American Legion Hut in Andrews. The celebration which begins with a parade will be followed by special events held at the Andrews ball park with S. J. Gernert as chairman. ? 9 Mrs. Eric Reichman, chairman of the Beauty Contest, has an founced that judging will take i place at the Andrews School Gym ' nasium at 3:30 p. m. ' Arrangements are being com pleted for a ball game between Andrews and Murphy. Mrs. A. B. Chandler, Jr., chair man with Mrs. Charles Hlgdon, co-chairman, of the Kiddle par ade announced that those wishing to enter should call for informa tion. The kiddie parade will be gin at the Dickey Chevrolet. Of special interest Is the fire works to be held at the ballpark at 8:30 p. m. with Edgar Wood and Robert T. Heaton in charge.
