In reminiscencing over the span of 32 years he recalls the great, and near-great, the steady work men among the State's lawmakers, who come and go. He is quoted as saying "as a usual thing business is conducted with a good deal of dignity, but on occasions the boys buck the traces." He remembers with a laugh the humorous happenings, as the time, j when Butch Love, son of Mr. and i Mrs. L. L. Love of Andrews, and a j mischievous page from ' Cherokee County, shot Luther Hodges with a water pistol. This incident happened during the 1953 session when Hodges was a lieutenant governor After the Senate adjourned one day, Hodges walked out of the capitol toward Fayeteville street; Butch was cas ing the area from a window in the Senate Chamber, his water, pistol cocked and primed. As the State's lieutenant governor stepped from the cover of the Capitol,, Butch pulled the trigger. His aim was perfect and he hit Luther Hodges squarely on the back of his neck. His invitation was given short consideration, and then Butch Love, shaking in his boots, stepped out of line and said "I did it. Sir." Hodges was so impressed by the youngster's courage in confessing his guilt he forgave him. Butch and Luther Hodges became fast friends after that, Lewis recalls. "On the last day of the session", he said "members of the Senate gave Hodges a water pistol; they stood Butch up beside him for the presentation ceremonies."
