Book Clubs Meet At Murphy School The Fourth Grade Book Club of Murphy elementary school held its meeting in the school library, last week Jan Davidson, president, presid ed over the business session aud the program committee, Elaine Martin, chairman, Luke Bayless. Knox Singleton, and Perry Brown presented the following members who gave book reports: Billy Lay. Gary Bryson, Oletta Corawell and Sherry MUlsaps. Officers of the club are Jan Davidson, president Peggy English vice-president; Mike Jordan, secretary; and Tripp Bourne reporter. Jane Whitley, president of the fifth grade club called the meet ing to order and heard book re views by Kenny Jane Davis, Becky Jo Ray. Billy King and Virginia Guffey. Winifred T- Wells, outstand ing Wallace lawyer, has been elect ed president of the Duplin County Bar Association for the coming year. This came as the result of a meeting held by the association Thursday afternoon last week at Kenansville in the Duplin County Courthouse Mrs. Wells is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Jackie Jackson Receives Army Promotion Jackie H- Jackson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Foca Jackson Jr., of Murphy, Route 3, recently was promoted to specialist third class in Germany where he is a mem ber of the 11th Airborne Division. Specialist Jackson, a mechanic in Company A of the division's 370th Armored Infantry Battalion, entered the Army in March 1956 and received basic training at Fort Jackson, S. C- He was last station ed at Fort Hood, Tex., and arriv ed in Europe in August 1956 The 20-year-old soldier attended Texana High School. Sermon Topics Given For First Baptist The Rev- J. A. Sgt- Pace s&id that young men who enlist in the Army between December 16 and January 1, may be granted holiday leave up to 15 days They will not be required to arrive at reception stations on Christmas or New Year's Day. The Army Recruiter also said that young women will not be sent to the WAAC Center, Fort McClel lan, Alabama, between December 13 and January 5. In making the announcement. Sgt.
