ed president of the Duplin County
Bar Association for the coming
year. This came as the result of a
meeting held by the association
Thursday afternoon last week at
Kenansville in the Duplin County
Courthouse

Jackie Jackson
Receives
Army Promotion
Jackie H- Jackson, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Foca Jackson Jr., of
Murphy, Route 3, recently was
promoted to specialist third class
in Germany where he is a mem
ber of the 11th Airborne Division.
Specialist Jackson, a mechanic
in Company A of the division's
370th Armored Infantry Battalion,
entered the Army in March 1956
and received basic training at Fort
Jackson, S. C- He was last station
ed at Fort Hood, Tex., and arriv
ed in Europe in August 1956
The 20-year-old soldier attended
Texana High School.

Named Supervisor
William Russell of Andrews has
been re-elected supervisor of the
Cherokee County Soil Conservation
District
Mr. Russell was re-named last
week for a three-year term. Other
members of the board are Wayne
Abernathy of the Hanging Dog
section and Claude Patterson of
Suit.

Sfc- Howard E. Greene, a veter
an of 10 years Army service, has
been assigned to the Bryson City
Recruiting Station to assist M-Sgt
Uliss C- Pace with the Recruiting
activities in this area.
Sergeant Greene, a native of
Shelby, is married and is the fath
er of three children. He and his
family resides in Bryson City.
The Recruiting area of the Bry
son City station embraces Swain,
Macon, Jackson, Graham, Clay
and Cherokee counties- The assign
ment of an additional Army re
cruiter indicates the importance
the Army attaches to the recruit
ing potential of the counties to be
covered and will enable the re
cruiters to work those counties
much more thoroughly, Sergeant
Pace said.

Funeral services for Porter Ax
ley, 65. who died at his home here
Friday, after an extended illness,
were held Saturday at 3 p. m in
the First Methodist Church of
which he was a member.
The Rev. R. T. Houts Jr., offi
ciated, assisted by the Rev- As
mond Maxwell and burial was in
Sunset Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Noland and
Roy Wells, Lewis Deweese, Tom
Palmer, John O'Dell and Cyrus C
White.
Mr. Axley was a native of Mur
I phy, a son of the late Abram and
Elizabeth Henry Axley old Chero
1 kee County families. For the past
28 years he worked for drugstores
here, first for the Parker Drug
Company and then for the Mauney
Drug Company. For 15 years he
was a rural mail carrier and post
al clerk, apj had been Murphy
town clerk
Surviving are the widow, Mrs.
Thelma Penland Axley; three
daughters, Mrs. Martha Palmer
of Murphy, Miss Frances Axley of
Knoxville, Tenn-, and Miss Rose
Axley of the home; two grand
daughters, Diane and Terressa
Palmer; and two sisters, Mr3.
Gladys Burgin of Wayncsville and
Mrs. Annie Deweese of Knoxville
and a brother, Larry of Savannah,

Army's Holiday
Enlistment
Plan Announced
Sergeant Pace, United State*
Army Recruiter in iiryson City,
said this week that young men and
women who enlist the latter part
of the month may spend the holi
days at home.
Sgt- Pace s&id that young men
who enlist in the Army between
December 16 and January 1, may
be granted holiday leave up to 15
days They will not be required to
arrive at reception stations on
Christmas or New Year's Day.
The Army Recruiter also said
that young women will not be sent
to the WAAC Center, Fort McClel
lan, Alabama, between December
13 and January 5.
In making the announcement.
Sgt. Pace said that anyone inter
ested in the Army's hodUay en
listment plan may contact him at
the Court House in Murphy each
Wednesday.
