Ways and means of providing more industrial pay rolls in Western North Carolina counties will come in for full dis cussions at a regional industrial development conference here Fri day. The conference will be sponsor ed by the Department of Conser vation and Development's com merce and industry division. Hosts will be the City of Asheville and the Asheville Chamber of Com merce. An address by Governor Hodges at a luncheon at 1:15 p. m. will close the conference Members of city and county governments, industrial develop ment organizations. Chambers of Commerce, the State Board of Conservation and Development, and staff members of the Depart ment of Conservation and Develop ment's commerce and industry di vision will attend the conference Driver Improvement Clinic To Start A driver improvement clinic is tentatively set to start here Tues day, April 15. Sponsored by the N. C. Depart ment of Motor Vehicles, the clinic is designed lor: Juvenile traffic law violators, students upon whom a fine would be an undue hardship, young driv ers whose parents pay their fines and persons of limited means un able to pay fines Judge Herman Edwards will co operate with officers in certain traffic violation cases, stipulating attendance of the clinic as part of sentences imposed. The clinic will be conducted here by Joe SherOl, driver education re presentative of the Department of Motor Vehicles; State Highway Patoiman Ray Heffner and Licen se Examiner Robert Hooper of Franklin. Each session will last two hours one night per week until an eight hour course is completed. These schools are operated on the theory that a large per cent of repeated violators can be rehibil itated and returned to the streets and highways as safe, responsible drivers. An attempt is made to help the traffic offender by helping him to A strike started Monday at mid night at The Hitchcock Corpora tion and Minerals & Metals Cor poration. An official of the plant said it was cai'ed by meuitters of Local 585, International Chemical Wok ers Union, AFL-CIO. Francis Bourne Jr., secretary treasurer of Hitchock, said the Union is asking more economic ad vantages. Picket lines were up at both plants. Hitchcock and Mineral & Metals together employes 87 work ers. Approximately 60 are not at work, it was reported Wednesday morning Annual payroll at the two plants is approximately $300,000, Mr. Bourne said. He said the plants are operating on a skeleton crew of foremen and supervisors. Mr. Borune said plans are to continue production and steps are being taken to hire addi tional workers. Hitchcock was established here in 1939 and has been operating at its present location since 1944. Minerals & Metals has operated here approximately 10 years The plants mine, pulverize and cut talc into metal workers cray ons. Mr. Bourne said: "During the past months of the depression, or so called recession, our employes have enjoyed: Paid vacations, no layoffs,, no reduction in hours, con tinued overtime hours, continued overtime pay, favorable working conditions, favorable pay scale and many fringe benefits." He said: "All this has been car ried out even though our sales have dropped and inventories have beep building up to the highest point is the history the comp any." Murphy Democrats To Name Candidates Monday Democrats will meet here Mon day night to name candidates for the Murphy May 6 election. Robert V. Weaver, chairman, said the meeting will be held at 8 p. m- in the courtroom of County Courthouse. EMILY COOPER DAVIDSON NOMINATED AS STATE MOTHER Mrs. Emily Cooper Davidson of Murphy is one of 11 mothers nominated for the honor of State Mother for 1958. This was announced this week by Mrs. J. Wilbur Bunn of Ral eigh, chairman of the state com mittee for the selection of the State Mother. The Jerry Davidson family was named church family of the year for 1957-58 at First Methodist Church. AH of the nominees will be hon ored in Raleigh on April 10 with a coffee hoar at the home of Chan cellor and Mrs. Carey Bostian of State College at noon. The State Committee will then escort them to the North Carolina Art Museum and to some of the lovely flower gardens in the city. The Sir Walter Hotel will be host to them at din ner at 6:30 p. m. Following the dinner the nomi nees, their families and friends will assemble at the Governor's Mansion to be greeted by Gover nor and Mrs. Hodges. At that time the announcement of the selection (Contbmed on back page) RED CROSS CAMPAIGN EXTENDED; WORKERS URGED TO FINISH JOR Robert Weaver, chairman of the local Red Crou Chapter, Wednes day called on drive workers to step up efforts in the current campaign. Several teams have not made reports and no figure of collec tions to date was available. Mr. Weaver said, however, that the drive was goiig as well as could be expected. This area's quota is *2,900. Bed Grose wocters are making a diligent drive to reach the quota to enable the Murphy area to again be qualified (or the bloodmobile and its services. Mr. Weaver said it was hoped that the quoted could be reached and the drive completed in out week. This was not accomplished, he pointed out. adding that the campaign will continue through April 15. Farm Housing Loan Program Expanded An expanded farm housing loan program designed to speed up farm building construction and im provement as well as act as an additional anti-recession measure was announced today by Bobert D. Bruce, Farmers Home Admin istration county supervisor. Now an owner of a farm in agri cultural production and on which the operator plans to produce at least $400 worth of farm commodi ties for sale or home use may qualify for the four per -cent long term bousing loan provided thai he meets other standard eligibil ity requirements. Formerly, an eligible applicant had to own a farm that produced a more substantial part of the op erator's annual cash income. Borrowers may use loan funds to build, improve, or repair farm houses and other essential farm buildings, and to provide water for farmstead end household use. Mr. Bruce said that in addition to financing major construction, the loan funds can help meet many other needs for farm and farm home modernization such as adding bathrooms, utility rooms, better kitchens, and many other improvements to the home as well as- to farm service buildings. While tenants and farm laborers are not eligible, the owner may borrow to do construction work or make im provements for them. The loans are made to farm owners who need credit to finance building improvements or repairs but find that adequate credit is not available through banks or other regular credit channels. The in terest rate is four per cent and loans may be amortized over per iods up to 33 years. Funds collected will go for win dows in Br?astown Baptist Church Martin's Creek Grange Sets Easter Egg Hnnt The Martins Creak Grange will hold its sixth animal egg hunt Easter Sunday at 1 p. m. at the Martins Creek School building. It will be used as headquarters for reservation maintenance forces for Hiwassee, Chatuge, Nottely, the three Ocoees, Apalachia, and Blue Ridge dams; for the Murphy power maintenance crew; and as a field office for the Maps and Sur veys Branch. These forces are presently using a structure built in 1941 as a temporary construction field office. The building will cost an esti mated $144,000- Construction is scheduled to be completed prior to June 30, 1959. The site is on TVA land, about a half mile southeast of the present maintenance build ing on the outskirts of Murphy. The building will be one-story, approximately 88 feet long by 65 feet wide with a wing at the south east corner 33V4 by 12 V4 feet. Ex terior and interior walls will be of 8-inch concrete block. The Power Operations storage yard will cover- ?pproximatriy 65.000 square feet. The Reservoir Properties storage yard will cover about 32,000 square feet. An access road about 600 feet long will be constructed to connect with old U. S. Highway 19. Exam To Be Given For Postmaster Job At Marble An examination for postmaster at Marble will be open for receipt of applications until April 22, the U- S. Civil Service Commission has announced. The job pays $4,190 a year. Applicants must take a written test- Those who pass will be as signed final ratings on the basis of this test and on their experience, ability, and character. There is a one-year residence requirement and applicants must have reached their 18th birthday on the closing date for receipt of applications. Persons over 70 years of age may not be appointed. Complete information about the examination requirements and in structions for filing applications may be obtained at the post office for whch this examination is being announced. The Good Friday services are to be from 1 until 2 p. m. Friday af ternoon at the Episcopal Church of the Messiah. Easter morning Ser vice will be held at Sunset Ceme tery at 7:30. Joining in with Murphy churches in the services commemorating the Crucifixion of Christ will be mem bers of the Salvation Army cadets from the Army college in Atlanta. As was the case last year the corps band will play on the square dur ing the noon hour and then join in the worship. Many downtown business houses are closing for the Good Friday service, which is to be marked by meditations upon the seven words of Jesus from the Cross, and mus ic appropriate to the worship. BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY TO BE TOLL FREE William Medford. chairman of the North Carolina National Park, Parkway and Forests Develop ment Commission, said in Waynes ville this week: "The decision of Secretary Seat on to direct the National Part Ser vice not to place a toll on the Blue Ridge Parkway is only wel come news, but goes far beyond that point, since it paves again that the position of North Carolina is corrert in opposing the omposi tion of a toll.
