?? By Mrs. Joan Cameron
^ Our first-born announced his initial case of diaper rash with
a special wail that we had not heard before. It wasn't a hunger
cry, all pins were intact, he wasn't feverish, and he was too young
io be teething. So, I changed his diaper and discovered raw red
patcnes OX SK1J1 UCIUW IIU iiuiu Iiy.-w
Being our number one son, he
bore the brunt of our inexperi
ence. But I soon found out from
the pediatrician that diaper rash
can be prevented, and neither
he nor our subsequent offspring
have suffered from this all too
common irritation since that
time.
The secret in preventing diaper
rash is to limit the opportunity
of bacteria to turn urine into
ammonia; ammonia is what
causes the rash.
You are not likely to run
into trouble if you change your
baby's diaper whenever neces
sary, coat his skin in the diaper
area with a pure ointment such
as Vaseline petroleum jelly, and
make sure that the diapers are
washed thoroughly so as to re
mm all traces of ammonia.
Other tips we have found help
' i ful are rinsing the diapers right
' after they are removed, using
1
absorbent wool soakers instead
of water-proof pants, and making
sure that diapers are thoroughly
rinsed after washing to remove
all soap residues.
If your tot is already afflicted,
go heavy on the petroleum
jelly, which is relatively inex
pensive compared to other lo
tions and ointments, and make
sure that the skin in the diaper
area is exposed to the air fre
quently each day.
