(This is the second in a series of
two articles on Murphy High
School senior class trip to Wash
ington recently.)
Seniors visited the Library of
Congress where they saw the Guex
enberg Bible, tbe Mains Bible and
Jefferson's rough draft ol the Con
sitution- The beautiful Italian Re
naissance interior and a lovely
Mosaic of Nunerva entranced the
seniors.
The Supreme Court Building with
its famous spiral staircase and ex
pensive tapestries was most mag
nificent- The young people were
told they might observe the court
in session but time did not permit
this.
The Archives Building boused
the Constitution, the Declaration of
Independence, and many other his
torically important documents. On
display that day were a number of
North Carolina documents such as
our ratification of the Constitu
tion and our proposed Bill of
Rights.
The group was privileged to see
the Marine Memorial, one of the
newest additions to the city. The
huge statue of the Iwa Jima flag
raising on Mt- Surabachi was awe
inspiring. The inscription read
UNCOMMON VALOR WAS THEIR
COMMON VIRTUE. At the base of
the statue was a list of all the
marine campaigns in chronological

Tomotla softball team defeated
Nantahala in * a double header
Sunday, April 13 at Tomotla.
The scores were 15 to 2 and 12
to 8. Fred Keener was on the
mound for Tomotla in the first
first game and Bill Jones was
pitcher for the second
Others on the Tomotla squad are
Bill .Crawford, catcher; Walt Pal
mer, first; Holt Palmer, second;
Dale Price, short stop; Bill Jones,
third; J. D. Decker, left field;
Bill Brandon, center field and
Mickey Burchfield right field.
The Tomotla team welcomes all

The group was on band for the
10 a. m. changing of the guard at
the tomb of the unknown Soldier in
Arlington Cemetery. They saw the
many beautiful memorials to their
country's military heroes there.
The Lee Mansion was also an in
teresting sight.
Later in the day they drove
through Embassy Row and saw
the only Mohammendan mosque in
the Western Hemisphere.
They also passed inrough the zoo
and saw many exotic animals
The National cathedral (Episco
palian) was a special treat. A
guide explained the historical sig
nificance, the architecture, the re
ligious symbolism, and the human
element of its construction. The
seniors visited the bay housing
President Woodrow Wilson's Body.
The Smithsonian Institute was
for many the highlight of the trip.
The First Ladies' gowns, the Spir
it of St. Louis, the Wright Broth
ers plane, the telephone display,
the Museum of Natural History,
and other things too numerous to
mention captured their fancy.
The last stop was at the National
Gallery of Art- This beautiful build
ing housed the world's finest
paintings from Renoir to Picasso.
Hie chaperones, well-loved and
much-appreciated by all, were
Mrs. T. A. Case. Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Ray, Mrs. Ed Brumby, Mr. and
Mrs. Ben Palmer, and Mr. and
Mrs. Holland McSwain.
