SENATOR QtVIN PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE SENATOR KERR SCOTT WASHINGTON? A long with North Carolina, the people here in Waaington were saddened and shocked by the death of my col league in the Senate, Senator W. Kerr Scott. WILLIAM KERR SCOTT The Squire of Haw River, as he was affectionately known, came to the Senate only a few months after I had taken my seat. When he was nominated and elected, a mutual friend of ours stated to me that he sincerely hoped that the two of us could work together in harmony for the good of our people. I stated at the time that I could work with any person who loved ' North Carolina, and I knew of no one that loved our State more than Kerr Scott. Senator Scott never failed in his devotion to North Carolina and her people. An humble and modest man, Senator Scott exemplified those qualities which have char acterized our greatest statesmen and leaders He has plowed to the end of the row; his furrow is deep; time will not erode his indelible imprint up on our great State for which he so unceasingly labored and gave his full measure.' As one who has served with him in the United States Senate, I can testify with pride that Senator Scott served North Carolina and the Nation with honor and distinc tion, carrying on the high tradition of his predecessors. I shall miss him greatly. The Senate will certainly miss him, and North Carolina will ever remember William Kerr Scott of Haw River. Sam J. Ervin Jr., U. S.
