TEEN SCENES By BETTY WEAVES Approximately forty senios left the Murphy bus station at 7:S0 a. m. Friday en route to Western Carolina College at Cullowhee. The occc&sion was High School Senior Day. More than 500 pupils from western North Carolina sen ior classes participated. On arrival they went to Hoey Auditoirum where they registered and received identification cards. They attended a general assem bly. They were welcomed by Marvin Cole, student body presi ident. and Dr. Paul A. Reid, presi dent of the college- The music students presented a short pro gram. Lunch was served in the cafe teria. Afterwards there was a two hour tour. Seniors were permitted to confer with the heads of the de partments in which they were in terested. Departments open for ob servation included: art, business, English, foreign languages, fores try, geography, health and physi cal education, home economics, industrial arts, library science, mathematics, music, nursing, psy chology, science, social studies, teaching, pre-dental, pre-engineer ing, pre-agricultural, pre-medicine, and pre-law. RED CROSS OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE PLANS FOR EXTENSIVE SERVICE Bob Weaver, local Red Cross Chairman, and Joe Ray, IKS Red Cross Fund Chairman, announced this week plans for extensive Red Cross service programs underway to benefit residents of Cherokee Recreational facilities were open. Swimming, use of the tram poline, three plays and a baseball game were on the agenda. A tired, but happy, group piled in the bus about 4:30 for the trip home. Mrs. Grace Strain of Asheville, a national volunteer field consut ant with 37 years experience in Red Cross volunteer work, met with Mrs. H. G. Elkins, chairman of Home Service; Mrs. Francis Bourne, vice-chairman Home Ser vice; Mrs. Ben Warner Jr., Home Service volunteer and Miss Mary Katherine Kinsey. field represen tative for this area from Chatta nooga Plans were made for a social welfare aide training course deal ing with case work technics. It will be held June 3-4 in Murphy with a general informative session open to the public on May 21 from 2 to 4 p. m. at the Episco pal Parish house. The general session will be con ducted by Mrs. Strain. The Train ing course in June will e conducted by Miss Anna Mae Biddle, Nation al Red Cross Home Servicc rep resentative of Atlanta. Richard Pfarrer, National Red Cross safety service representa tive for this area, met with Ho bart McKeever and Mr. Ray to work out a water safety program for the summer. Local authorized water safety instructors will pre pare qualified persons to take an instructor course the week of July 21 to insure increased water safety for people of Cherokee County. Clyde Howard, assistant director Junior Red Cross Southeastern area, Atlanta, met with Holand Mc Swain, John Jordan, Walter Puett, Mr. Weaver and Miss Kinsey to help establish a Junior Red Cross organization and programs for the schools and community. Mr. Weaver will announce soon the appointment of a local Junior Red Cross chairman to work with the schools in helping youth to serve their fellow man in this country and in other countries. Their work will tie in with that of 80 other Red Cross Societies over world. The Poliomeylitis Vaccine Committee of the State Medical Society has announced that a Salk "booster" vaccination is advisable this year for those persons who received their third polio injection more than one year ago. Dr. S. F.
