Soil Conservation NEWS ?? JOHN 8 II I * ? F arris Bryson who lives on Copper Creek near Unaka, has as pretty a field of corn as there is to be seen- Most of the corn in that section of the county has al ready turned brown, but Bry gon's corn is still as green as it was in July. The secret of the green com is the crop that was planted before the corn Last September, Bryson broad cast 20 pounds of Crimson Clover in the corn rows. This clover made a lot of nitrogen out of the air and deposited it in the soil. In May the clover was turned into the soil with a moldboard plow. Com was plant ed in June with 1000 pounds of 5-10-10 fertilizer on the three acre field. No nitrogen was used as side dressing for sufficent nitrogen was alieady in the soil from the clover. The rows are three feet apart and the stalks about 8 inches in the row. This field really looks like "hund red bushel corn". Besides making good corn yields, crimson clover has had several other desirable effects on the soil. First, the soil is now mellow and easily worked while it was hard and cloddy before planting clover the first time. Second, much more oi the rain that falls on the soil runs into the ground rather than run ning off over the top of the ground. When asked how much the ten dollars he spent for clover seed last September has been worth to him, Bryson replied, "I guess it was worth at least forty bushels of corn to the acre." I wouldn't have made more than fifty or sixty bushels to the acre without the clover." T. J. Hossley, the area engineer for the Soil Conservation Service was in the county last week looking over a proposed pond site on the Lee Shields farm. The dam for this pond will require nearly 25,000 cub ic yards of dirt for its construction. Approximately twelve acres of lake will be backed up by the completed dam. The recently completed dam on the farm of Walter and George Headley near Andrew* has been aeeded down to grass and email grain to protect it from erosion A good stand waa gotten and the dam should be well protected during the winter and spring rains. A Soil and Water Conservation Plan was delivered to Prank Ghlr Inghelli last week. This plan waa developed by Ghirlnghelli and tech nicians of the Soil Conservation Service recently.
