Comity ASC News ?rLL K1SSKLBUBG 1M Ml Ink Attracts 8,788 Tmr led fmen During the Initial opening of the 18? Sod Bank Conservation Re serve Program a total of 9,788 North Carolina farmers visited their local ASC county office and requested that rates be establish ed for, their farm for possible participation in next year's pro gram. According to H. D. Godfrey, State Administrative Officer for the ASC State Committee, these 1 farmers who reguested the es tablishment of maximum pay ment rates for their farms are in no way obligated to follow through by participating in the program; however, he estimates that a good portion of these farm ers who evidenced interest dur ing the initial signup will parti cipate in the program. To the nearly 10 000 farmers in this state who have taken the first step to ward participating in the Soil Bank Program, Godfrey issued an urgent reminder that they have only through the 24th of this month to visit the ASC Office and offer whatever amount of their eligible land they desire to place in "reserve" at a rate equal to, or less than, the maximum rate es tablished by the ASC county com mittee. Godfrey expressed concern over the fact that some farmers were inclined to think that after their first visit to the county office they had already taken all steps neces sary to participate in the program. This be said, is definitely not the case and October 24 is the deadline for making a definite offer. Farm ers who have had rates established for their farms should by all means visit the county office as early as possible and no later than the 24, if they intend to par ticipate. Farmers who taxe part In the ' 1959 CR Program will earn cost share payments to cover a sub stantial part of the cost of estab lishing conservation practices on the- reserve acreage, in addition to the greatly increased annual pay ment on land place in reserve. Practices that will be available in 1959 include establishment of a protective cover of grasses or le gumes or trees, practices to con serve water, and practices design ed especially for wildlife protect ion. The conservation reserve pro gram for 1959 according to Godfrey cffers a very attractive opportunity to many farmers in this state who MURPHY PERSONALS Mrs. W. J.
