By PAUL NAVE By L. B. MARSHALL Jr. County Agent A fcEW SOYBEAN FOB NOBIS CAROLINA Hood, a new variety of soy beans. has been released for seed increase for North Carolina farm ers. Seed for extensive planting should be available for i960. Hood will be of special interest in the areas where Ogden matur ity and plant type are desired. With better seed yields, seed quality and seed holding ability, it could be used as a replacement for Ogden in Northeastern and Tidewater areas of North Caro lina In USDA regional tests over a five-year period? 1953 - 57 ? seed yields have been 6 per cent high er than Ogden on the cast coast. The oil content is slightly high er, while protein content is slight ly lower. The new variety is resistant to bacterial pustule, wildlife, frog eye and target spot. During wet fall seasons Hood will have purple stain about like Ogden. Average plant height should be 30-36 inches with heavy foliage and moderate size stems. The flowers are purple, rnd the plants have a gray pubescence. Hood soybean I ave a yellow seed coat with a light brown hil um, or "eye". Variety demontratiom are now maturing in several Northeastern counties in North Carolina. FARM QUESTIONS QUESTION: How can tobacco be surcessfully cured in bulk, when tightly-packed tobacco in an ordinary barn will scald? ANSWER: The secret is in the forced air movement which is possible in the specially-built barns used in bulk-curing tobac co. A blower forces hot air up through the packed leaves of to bacco. After the air goes through the leaves, it is drawn to the top of the barn where it can be re leased if the moisture content is high. Thus, only dry air is circu lated through the leaves, which prevents scalding. The market value of farm land and buildings in North Carolina rose 4 per cent during the year ending July 1, 1958. As the size of swine operations increase, more attention must be given to labor-saving devices in housing. and the Delta Branch Experiment Station, Stoneville, Mississippi.
