GARDEN TIME By M. E. . GARDNER ? It is not too late to make a re solution for the new year. I can't think of a better one than resolv ing to do a better job of insect and disease control in 19S9. Here are some pests we can control at this season of the year. Bag worm on Juniper? examine your plants, remove and destroy the bags. Sprays and dusts are not effective at this season. Red Cedar "apple"? this is an al ternate host disease which spends the winter stage on the red cedar and the summer stage on the ap ple. Destroying the brown "apples" now will lestroy the sourec of In fection and protect your apple trees and those of your neighbors. This is especially important in commer cial apple growing areas. White Peach Scale ? a number of specimens of privet hedge have been brought in showing heavy in festations 6f this troublesome in sect. It also attacks the peach (thus the name) and is difficult to control. On privet, spray with 3 per cent dormant oil. Make two ap plications two weeks apart. Do not use oil when the mean temperature is below 50 degrees F. Cottony-Cushion Scale? This is a sucking insect and is especially bad on pittosporum and gardenia (Cay^e Jasmine), Spray with 2 per cent dormant oil for best results. One thorough spraying should give good results. Observe same precautions as far as temperature is concern ed. Camellia Leaf Scale ? Spray with 2 per cent white-oil emulsion. This season (dormant or resting) is the best time to control this insect. Ob serve temperature precautions. For scale insects on ash, oak and maple use 3 per cent dormant oil spray at the rate of 3 gallons of These Southern Railway Dollars stayed home! THE RAILROAD that "Serves the South'* is more than a mass transportation service vital to the economic development of the young and fast-growing Southland. To the hundreds of communities along its lines, Southern Railway is an important home-town industry, too. Many of the dollars that the railroad receives from its customers in a community never leave town. They "stay home" to create jobs, to buy goods and services of all kinds ? and to help pay local taxes. Of every $100 the Southern received last year in Revenues, $86.05 was paid out for wages, materials and supplies and taxes. $15 million went for state and local taxes alone. A good share of all of our dollars are stay at-home dollars that stimulate local business and contribute to the economic well-being of the territory we serve. Not only is the 8,100-mile Southern System one of the Southland's largest industries. It is hundreds of local industries as weD, that benefit the Southern's friends and neighbors throughout the Soi^th. SOUTHERN RAILWAY.3VSTPM ^WASHlNQTONt ? *?? oil of 100 ga&ou of watar.
