J, Joyce Waldroup Selected Winner Of Talent Show "nie 4-H Talent Show was held last Thursday. May 19, 1960 at 7:30 p.m. in the Murphy Ele-i mentary Auditorium. Hiere was approximately 25 different numbers on the program and about 80 people attending the show. The judges. John Jordan, Mrs. Margaret Bare and Mrs. Jim Young, selected Miss Joyce Wald roup of the Murphy Senior 4-H Club as the winner of the show. Miss Waldroup sang from the Broadway Musical, My Fair Lady. "I Could Have Danced All Night." Runner up winners were a Buck Dance team composed of: Sandra Chastain. Pamalia Chastain, Carol Kay. Charlotte Stalcup, Mary Chimce and Dianne Wilkens. Mrs. Pete Stalcup is their leader. Kiss Joyce Waldroup will re present Cherokee County in the District finals to be held In Ashe ville on June 30. 1960. NEW OFFICERS OF WOMAN'S CLUB Miss Helen Hartshorn, of Asheville, president of District I, N.C. First Baptist Church Honors Seniors Sunday Sunday eveiyng at 8:00 o'clock the graduating seniors of the First Baptist Church will be re cognized in special service de signed especially for them. The songs of the service will be youth songs and the Concord Choir with members of the Chapel Choir will sing a special arrange ment of All Creatures of our God and King with Jimmy Kinnsey directing. The Rev. J.i Alton Morris will preach a sermon on a topic of interest to the Seniors. Sunday morning at 8:30 a m. the Seniors will be favored with a breakfast at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Buchanan and will be given remembrances from both the teachers' of the Young People's Department and the I church. G. Lee will give his well known sermon "Pay Day Some Day." Sunday School will be held as usual. Power Accountants T o Meet Here; Dewar To Speak The Eastern Division Power Ac countants Association will hold a meeting at the Murph.t Electric Power Board Building at 10 a.m. Friday. May 27. Mr. Harry Dewar. a native of Andrews, is the featured speaker on the program. Mr. Dewar will speak on "The Computer and Electric Distribution." Mr. Dewar in 1932 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. For the past 13 years, he has been a partner in the firm of Patterson & Dewar Engineers of Decatur. Ga. A tour of the power houso at Hiwassee Dam is planned for the afternoon and the group will view the riversible turbine which was installed a few years ago. Other points of interest that will be visited are Hiwassee Re sort Villiage and "Field of the Woods". A banquet is scheduled at 7 p.m. at Duke's Lodge. The Caroline Sweethearts will entertain the! group. A group of 50 accountants are expected for the meeting. The Eastern Division Power Account ants Association is comprised of the accountants from the TV A power distributors located in east ern Tennessee, northern Georgia, : and western North Carolina. | HARRY DEWAR Primary Day Approaches; Governor's Race To Be Close Two Candidates Visit County During Week Primary election day is Saturday. May 28, for both the Democratic and Republican parties. The polls will open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m. Cherokee County has 24 voting precincts. The gubernatorial race is shaping up to be one of the closest in many a year. On the Democratic ticket in the governor's race are: John D. Larklns Jr., I. Bever ly Lake. Terry Sanford, and Malcolm Seawell. Cub Scouts Have Family Gathering Cub Scout*, their parents and other members of the family ob served pack gathering ? the clos ing of the season before resump tion in September ? with a family picnic and award hour Monday evening at Kiddy Park. Seven cubbers were recogniz ed as passing from the ranks of Webbs to Boy Scout realm. These Cubbers are: John Bruce. Donald Ramsey, Johnny and Bob by Rogers, Donald Stiles. Hubert Wells and Phillip Wilcox Merit awards were made. Cub bers and friends enjoyed a picnic supper, various activities and : games. Donald Ramsey, cub master presided, and Peyton C. j Ivie offered the prayer of thanks. | Kiddie Park Will Open T uesday : H. L. McKeever, Chairman of the Murphy Summer Recreation Board, announced today that the Kiddie Park will open May 31, with Mrs. Ruth Cheney in charge. The Park will be open for all children under 7 years of age from 9:00 to 12:00 in the morning; and 2:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon. Monday through Saturday. The Park will not be open on Sun days. The Park contains two small swimming pools, shower and toi let facilities, a first-aid station, a telephone, swings, sand piles, and horizontal bars and monkey cages. All children under 7 years! of age are invited to attend the Park as often as they wish under I experienced adult supervision. Mrs. Cheney suggests that very small children should be accom panied by an adult. This year marks the 7th con secutive year during which the Kiddie Park has been in opera tion. All funds which go to pay the Supervisor and maintain this re creational facility are raised by {public subscription. Presbyterians To Fete Seniors At Service Members of the church in the 1960 graduating class at Murphy High School are being recognized at evening worship at Murphy Presb>terian church next Sunday at 7:3rt. The theme of the minister, Robert A. Potter, will be "Re membeiing. and Pressing On." Holland McSwain. superintendent of city schools and member of the Session, governing board of the church, w ill express to the gradua ting Presbyterians a word of ap preciation and God-speed. The Pentecost Communion will jbe observed at the church a week {from next Sunday. June 5. Of these four candidates, two actively campaigned in Cherokee County during the past week. John D. Larkins Jr., spoke at several gatherings throughout the county on Friday, climaxing his visit to Cherokee County with a speech to a large group at the county courthouse Friday night. Terry Sanford flew in for a whistle stop campaign speech in Andrews on Monday. During the campaign three of the four gubernatorial candidates came to Cherokee County. Be side the two mentioned above. Malcolm Seawell visited the co unty a little over six weeks ago. On the national level, there are two Republican candidates seek ing election to the unexpired term in the U. S. House of Represent atives held by the late David M. Hall. They are Heinz Rollman of Wavnesville and Jack Shuler of Robbinsville. Those running for the 12th congressional seat on the Demo cratic ticket are Shelby E. Hor ton Jr.. Roy A. Taylor, and Thad D. Bryson Jr. This raoe is for the unexpired term of the late Mr. Hall plus a full term. Therefore the names of the candidates will appear twice on the ballot The counties that make up the 12th district are Cherokee. Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson. Macon, Swain, Transyl vania, and Buncombe. Four candidates are campaign ing for U.S. Senator. Senator B. Everett is seeking re-election, op posing him are Addison Hewlett, Robert W. Gregory . and Robert M. Mcintosh. On the ballot for lieutenant governor are H. Cloyd Philpott, David M. McConnell, and C. V. Henkel. Candidates for Associate Justice of the State Supreme Court are Clifton Moore and William J. Cocke. Mr. Cocke is a native of Asheville. Mayor Proclaims Saturday As 'Poppy Day' Mayor L. L. Mason announced today that Poppy Day will be observed this year on Saturday, May 28. He said the annual memorial to American war dead, which is sponsored by the American Le gion Auxiliary, will last all day. Volunteer workers from the Aux iliary will be on street corners throughout Murphy offering pop pies to the public. "Poppy Day enables every Am erican citizen to personally wear a memorial to this nation's war dead." Mayor L. L. Mason said. "At the same time the wearing of a red poppy is recognized as a tribute to our disabled veterans of three wars," he added. "I hereby proclaim Saturday. May 28. to be Poppy Day in the City of Murphy. I strongly urge that all our citizens observe this day by wearing the memorial poppy " Murphy School Band To Present Concert I The Murphy School Band will present its first spring concert Friday night May V. at S p.m. at the graduation exercises to be held at the Murphy School Audit orium. The program includes the fol lowing selection* : "The Lord's Prayer" by Malotte; "Host of Freedom" march by King; "Lot t spiel" overture by Ketar-Beia; Sunlit Smadts" by Ogden. ' Hymn of Freedom" by Braln^ First movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata"; "Avaka 'Nights" by Olivadoti; Themees from Betboven's Third Symphony; Ballet Parisien" by Offenbach; and "El Captain" march by John The Murphy School Band is com posed almost entirely of fifth, sixth, and seventh graders. This past year the band has played at several football games, gave a Christmas concert, record ad a radio program, participated in the District music contest at W. C. C? and gave concerts at Ranger, tfiwaaaee Dam, Paacb tree, and Martins Creek Schools. The band w*l conclude this yaars's program with the concert Friday night. ? ? Bill Gos Highway Patrol To Check; For Drivers' Licenses j Checking stations will be estab lished throughout Western North Carolina to remind drivers to comply with law concerning oper ating a motor vechile without a ! proper license. State Highway Department re cords show a steady and sub stantial increase in vehicle re gistration. The driving populat ion is increasing as many reach driving age each year. However, contrary to the gen eral increase in registration and population, a decrease has devel oped in the number of licensed i drivers this year. The State Highway Department: has concluded that many people tare driving without a license,; :or with an expired license. ' Sgt. T. A. Sandiin. of the High way Patrol office reports that; checking stations will be held in' the following counties: Jackson. Macon, Clay, Cherokee, Graham, and Swain to remind drivers to comply with the law. ; Art Gallery Offers Artists Chance To Exhibit Work The Manor Galleries. 265 Char lotte Street. Asheville. X. C. are offering an opportunity to all artists within a hundred mile radius of Asheville to submit their work for exhibition the first Sat urday of each month. This monthly exhibition is to include all types of original work, both traditional and contempora ry. and all media will be con sidered. Recent work is preferred and must be sutiably framed for hanging. Artists are urged to bring at least three paintings and the hanging committee, which will serve as a rotating jury, will select from all the entries the paintings which will make up the best possible show. The first entry date will be Saturday. June 4th, 1960. Paint ings should be brought to the Manor Galleries before two p.m. that day.
