New Book
Weimar Jones, editor of Hie
Franklin Press, is the author of
a book, "My Affair With a Week
ly," which was published August
6 by John F. Blair, Publisher, of
! Winston-Salem. The book is made
| up of selections from his widely
read weekly column, "Strictly
| Personal." In his foreword, Mr.
Jones says, "This book is about
my home and county, about my
weekly newspaper, and about me
as its editor . . .. Because Frank
i lin and Macon County are much
I like rural counties and their
j count) seat towns the country
| over . . . maybe this little book
lis about many people in many
places."
Chap'ers that obviously have to
do with newspapering are "A
Letter from the Editor," "Only a
Weekly." "Want to Buy a News
paper?" and "How to Write an
Editorial." Topics of a more des
ultory nature include "A Juke
Box Muted." "In Praise of Old
Maid Aunts," 'Tale of a Tea,"
"Adventures in Myopia" and
"Why the Russians Want the
Moon."
Mr. Jones has had wide ex
perience as a newspaperman,
having worked in various capa
cities for Hie Greensboro Daily
Record, The Associated Press,
The Charlotte Observer, The
Asheville Citizen and The Ashe
ville Times. Between newspaper
jobs he tried other work but says
that when he and his wife bought
The Franklin Press in 1945, "then
life really began!" The highest
compliment he has ever received
concerning his running of The
Press was this: "TTiey used to
say: 'If you want to go to sleep
at night, read The Franklin Press
before you go to bed; that way,
you'll have nothing on your
mind." . . . Well, that Just ain't
so any more."
Mr. Jones has served as a di

president of the North Carolina
Press Association, spent a year
at the University of North Caro
lina in Chapel Hill as visiting
lecturer in journalism, and has
won numerous state and national
editorial awards.
Toward the end of the book,
Mr. Jones has attempted to sum
up his philosophy as a newspa
perman. One paaragraph is as
follows: "I believe the obligation
of a country editor is only half
discharged when he inform* his
readers ? fully, accurately, ob
jectively?and stimulates them to
think. Beyond that, his job ts to
exalt the simple virtues that have
made this nation great and to
speak out so clearly that the
same voice of the country is sure
to be heard, despite the dtie*'
din."
